Faulkner, chief instruct'or, placed a new emphasis on the importance of the R.O:T.C. Also many new weapons were added and the course was generally broadened, with the ultimate purpose of winning back the coveted honor star, denoting a superior R.O.T.C. organization, during Federal lnspection in May. Paschal's rifle team made a better than average showing during the season, winning second in the city match, third in the American Legion match, and placing in the Seventh Army match. Noteworthy Was the formation of officers and non-commissioned officers clubs strictly for entertainment, representative of the lighter side to military training. The club boasts of 34 members. Officers include Norma lean Morris, presidentg Vance Hendricks, vice-president: and Betty Smothers, secretaryg while Miss Caroline Gaither is sponsor. Mathematics Day climaxes all Penta Club activities. This is the day that letters and silver and gold pins are awarded to math pupils making not less than four A-pluses and one A. Slide rules are also awarded then to those pupils who excel in the techniques of the slide rule. Ap- proximately GU felt letters, l5 silver pins, and 8 gold pins are awarded each year by the club. Besides sponsoring a slide rule class, Penta members award ribbons each six-weeks to A -plus math students. The club made a brief study of astronomy, highlighted by a lecture on meteorites at TCU by Dr. Oscar Monnig, a night trip to McLean Iunior High to count the mete- orites during the rain of meteorites, and a speech on the navigation by the stars by Miss Charlie Noble, founder of the Penta Club. A Christmas party and the annual Penta picture show and dinner party make up the main social events sponsored by the club. ik ik LITTLE EUNEHESS sf: Sir Strictly for Girls reads the sign that hangs on the door of room 225 every Thursday af- ternoon as the members of Little Congress discuss the business and doings of the week. Little C was organized as a speech club during its early days. lt gave scholarships to girls who were on the debating team, but when the school board dispensed with debates, the motto, scholarships, and speech ideals were dropped. The motto now is Doing good for the community. During the year, Little gave to the Red Cross, Goodfellows fund at Christmas, two uniforms for the band, and any other worthy causes that came up. Misses Claudie Mae Workman and Iimmy Benson have been the sponsors for about ten years. Other than Miss Mary Sweet, the original organizer and sponsor, Misses Workman and Benson have been the only sponsors. To become a member of Little a girl has to fill out a petition, give a three minute talk in front of the members, and then take and pass a test on its constitution. The membership is limited to 40. For their social life-a Hslumberless' slumber party seems to rate at the top. Once a year a banquet is given at which the president for the following year is elected. J sf: si? PAN-AMEHIEAN CLUB sf: wil? Buenos dias? Como estan ustedes? So begins a meeting of the Pan-American Student Forum, one of Paschal's largest, most active, and most interesting clubs. Made up of Spanish and history students and sponsored by Miss A. Louise Bomar, Spanish teacher, this group meets on the second Thursday of each month, usually in room l4U. Officers, elected for a full year, are Bob Adams, president, Elizabeth Walls, vice president, Bobbie lean Watts, secretary, and Bea Smith, treasurer. Acting in capacity of program chairman, Elizabeth Walls plans a varied and unusual en- tertainment for each meeting. At different times the programs featured vocalists singing Span- ish songs, guest speakers, violinists, pianists, Spanish dancers, round table discussions and quizzes. At Christmas the club enjoyed talks on Christmas customs in South America and Mexico and the ceremony of breaking the traditional pinata, in this case a large purple turkey with curly crepe paper feathers, which was filled with candy and nuts. The annual contest, sponsored by the Pan-American Student Forums of Texas and held each spring in Austin, is to be well attended by Paschal members. This state-Wide affair is scheduled for May 9. Bob Adams and Dan Daggett are to compete in the information please division, Mary Ann Morris in the essay section, Betty Steel will enter her poetry, and in the musical field, Marilyn Crill and Peg Ott will play the piano and Doris Cohn will sing. As the members sing the official club song to close meetings, they set forth the purpose of the organizationrnto bring about a stronger and more united America, North and South. N , ..,...,. I A ff. W ix' it Y-TEENS ELUB aff it The purpose of the Y-Teens organization of Paschal shall be to build a fellowship of girls devoted to the task of realizing in our common life those ideals of personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians -so reads the preamble of the Y-Teens, one of the most active clubs in Paschal. The Y-Teens, formerly known as the Girl Reserves, boasts a limited membership of thirty. lt is sponsored by Mrs. Pensive Robertson, English teacher, and Willa Dean Dudley has presided as president for l947. Y-Teens have picnics, parties, and many other socials which keep the members in an ac- tive interest for the club. Other activities included an Easter Egg hunt, bowling, and weiner roasts. An all city school activity was the Mother-Daughter banquet on April 23 at the First Presbyterian Church in which the daughters honored their mothers. They also had a Christ- mas party and a luncheon for the mid-term graduates. They have followed many city-wide programs and largely base their activities on world fellowship. Their talks in their twice monthly meetings include Up to Date Dating, Choosing A College, and World Fellowship. They also have sent representatives to other city group club meetings. They participated in the city-wide candle lighting service on December 8 at the First' Presbyterian Church. They were represented by Theresa Arington in the Hanging of the Greens at the Lena Pope Home. They also sponsored the streamer sales for the football games. sf? if JUNIOR ELAESIEAL LEAGUE ik' ir The lunior Classical League, composed of l2O students ot Latin and Ancient history, high- lights its full year with the annual celebration of Latin Week, May 3-10, when exhibits, contests, and Roman customs are publicized throughout the school. Programs on ancient civilization have been given monthly at the regular meetings. Mr. Roy M. Stone, vice principal, spoke on his visit to Mount Vesuvius and the ruins ot ancient Pompeii. The club had a party at the home of the sponsors Miss Genie Beck and Miss Anna Gard- ner in October at which thirty-tive new members were initiated. These parties held each year keep the sponsors guessing as to what sort ot nonsense to try next, says Miss Gardner. The League, a national organization, holds a yearly convention. l-larry Flosenstein, Pas- chal senior, who was elected State Treasurer at the last convention held at Paschal, will serve as one of the delegates, along with Edward Ladd and Eddie Soniat, to the convention to be held in Beaumont this year. Headed by Margaret Welch, president, the ICL sponsored an All-School Dance, which wa held in the Paschal gym on December l3. Last year during the Latin Week celebration a skit on Iulius Caesar was given by t club. The president, assisted by vice president Aileen Welch, Pat' Edwards, secretary, Marian Echols, treasurer, will plan the celebration this year. 1 17 ik sf: PANTHFHETTF STAFF ik if The journalism room again became a natural habitat for a number of aspiring young re- porters as the Pantherette, Paschal's weekly newspaper, was published for the twenty-seventh consecutive year. Edited entirely by students in the journalism classes and supervised by Mrs. Margaret Caskey, it became the state champion weekly newspaper in the Texas High School Press As- sociation. lndividual winners in the contest were Elston Brooks, first, columns: Allen Person, second, editorials: Gerald Willingham, third, sports columnsy and Greg Sherry, third in sports stories and editorials. loanne Starnes, journalism student, was elected secretary of THSPA at the annual convention in Denton. The first Pantherette, published in 1926, was sponsored by Miss Agnes Edens, and only two years later, in l928, the journalism class found existence with Mrs. Minnie E. Tipton as teacher. . A new instructor and a new honor were added in 1942 when Mrs. Caskey turned from Spanish to journalism, and when the publication won International First Place Award in the Quill and Scroll contest. This prize has been given the Pantherette every year since then, from 1942 through 1946. Another occasion merited more than one proud writer as the Pantherette was announced top winner in the annual Fort Worth Press contest. Individual awards were given Allen Person, first place in front page make upg Elston Brooks, first place for his column, Babbling Brooks g Atwell Williams, second place in feature storiesy Don Maples, second place in sports stories. Honorable mention in columns, make up, and editorial were won by Greg Sherry. l it is l-ll-Y CLUB wif wif With a track coach as a sponsor, the Paschal Hi-Y Club got off to a fast start and strode through its first year at Paschal like a veteran organization. Started after a campaign by the Young Men's Christian Association urging the formation of such an organization at Paschal, Sponsor Earle Meadows, former Paschal student and ath- lete and still holder of the Olympics vaulting record, found himself with a roomful of Hi-Y en- thusiasts. Prom this organization of boys came President Loran Richards, Vice-President Frank Ball, and Secretary-Treasurer lim Snodgrass, who successfully led the group through its first Paschal year. The state Hi-Y convention, which was held in Denton, Texas, on April ll and l2, was at- tended by official Paschal delegates lim Snodgrass and Bob Castellaw, who picked up many pointers which aided in the further organization of the club. Feature of the group's athletic interests was the Winning of the Port Worth Y.M.C.A.'s bas- ketball tournament in March. Members of the team received individual medals for their cham- pionship efforts. The outstanding social event ofthe club Was held in connection With the Y-Teens, a hay ride and picnic on Feb. 8. V Purposes of the newly-formed organization as stated by Sponsor Meadows is to Promote and maintain high standards of Christian character throughout' the school and the ocrnmunityf' l wil? it UIETHIBUTIVE EDUEATIUN CLUB si? ik' Heading a list of the most unique and worthwhile organizations at Paschal is the Distribu- tive Education Club. The members of this club have a distinct advantage over other club members as this or- ganization is directly connected with the Distributive Education Class and for this reason they find more time for their club activities. Besides the hour donated from class activity every other Friday to an official club meeting, the members find their class period directly in accord with their club work. t Nancy Withrow has the top hand as she presides as president, while Alfred Bradford, and Wilma lean Pigg assist as vice-president and secretary-treasurer respectively. Miss Anna Buckley, distributive education teacher, is the club sponsor. The purpose of this organization is to discuss and help solve any problems that may arise concerning each members particular job, and to promote better relation and understanding between employer and employee. This idea is carried out during club meetings by talks from outside speakers and moving pictures in which store selling and business organizations are more clearly shown. I The main activities of this club during the school year were a picnic in the fall and a Sadie Hawkins Dance in the spring. The club also sponsored two delegates to the State Distributive Education Convention in Dallas during March. ww-wma! il? it GIRLS' GLEE ELUB it it The Girls' Glee Club, under the direction of Miss Lois Buth Mitchell, has done much to bring enjoyment to Paschal's faculty and students as Well as business organizations and social clubs in Fort Worth this year.
