Fifth Company On -lune the Zlst XVC left our home in Chi. For Battle Creek in Mich. A soldier's life to try. XfVe landed there that evening And had a darned good feed, The next day were dished out to us Clothes that we would need. NVC then were all court-martialed And sentenced to he shot, :X few were laid up for repairs But most' of us were not. .-X couple of days sped quickly past, llut work was soon at hand, l'Ve marched and drilled from morn to night ln sand and sand and sand. And oh the sun would beat down, Your eyes would seek the ground, But never would they rest there long XN'ith Sergeant Shire around. Our locomotive organs NVere well cared for, too, To have them quit would lay us up and That would never do. The Fourth we went out camping, And Cascy', gave a treat Of ice cream, cake and candy, XVe had all we could eat. Day in and day out we drilled and marched Upon the sandy field, Until with skill and accuracy Our guns we learned to wield. Fifth Company Prophecy W'ould lips quiver with surprise, would some saddened heart be overcome with joy, would friendships be renewed if, in some shell-torn land, in some war- stricken countrv, amid the cries and shrieks of a tlame-swept battlefield, amid the thundering noise and the deafening yells of lighting heroes, amid sufferings, amid victorious whoops, two friends should meet, two friends with an iron-clad love, a love fondled in but six weeks, a lasting, a true, a devoted affection, ex- isting among true soldiers of America, among true soldiers of the Reserve Cf- hcers Training Corps, among true, staunch, and spirited soldiers of the Fifth Company ? War swept the world. The United States was concerned. It was a dif- ferent country in a military way than in l'll6. AX well-trained army guarded her land, led by an able body of ofhcers, trained, in a new system inaugurated in l9l9. XVar, uncertain war, loomed before her. No fear was entertained. The United States was ready and a prepared United States is unconquerable. The war clouds settled. The light-blowing wind swept the shrouds from a cooling battlefield. It was a hard encounter. rXmerica's enemy was strong but continued beaten. Men on both sides were sacriliced. :Xcross the broken ground an exhausted man crept. llc bore military infor- mation to his commander. Uncertainty surrounded him. NVould he succeed in his mission? Overcome with wounds, it seemed improbable that his mission would be completed. He was brave. A lighting spirit enveloped his soul, Slowly but steadily he advanced, led on by his love for, his hope to help escort his land safely through her trouble. Quickly he became fatigued. To him his destination could never be reached. Yes, it was true. He could hold out no longer. The spirit never died, the phys- ical man became helpless. The battle continued. In a shell hole lay the message bearer. In vain he tried to move. His body would not respond to the wishes of his soldierly heart. Out of the heavy clouds, out of the fumes of the battlefield, as if from no- where. came another warrior. To the same rendezvous he came as his wounded brother. -Toy brightened the face of the message bearer. Here was a friend, here was a fellow soldier who would complete his mission. Great joy was to come into his soul. Hello bud, greeted the newcomer. l see you're all in. Come close, pleaded the other, you must help me. 'HI have a message, very important. Carry on. 75
