'Hu , 1955 UUARTERMASTER ROTC SUMMER CAMP rom IEE, VIRGINIA FoRE:vvoRD LEARN TODAY ...... LEAD TOMORROW With this motto emblazoned upon every building and fixed in the mind of each cadet, 486 Advanced Quartermaster ROTC cadets descended upon Fort Lee, Virginia on 25 June 1955. Determined to learn, the cadets flowed into previously pre- pared barracks to meet their summer camp instructors who were carefully selected to teach them. Then began the preliminary processing that led the cadet on an active continuing program of clothing issues, size exchanges, administrative processing and finally-a welcome bedding down in his home for the next six weeks. So, this is Army life -was the common thought of each cadet as he surveyed his surroundings. A good bed, good bunk-mates and excellent food soon began to make life more enjoyable. With the development of comradeship and the respect for military training, the change to a military way of life was made, with no misgivings. As the training began and individual participation increased, a new feeling of con- fidence surged through each cadet. Soon, hesitant cadets developed into firm, confident leaders and the entire training picture took on a valued outlook. Was the camp a success? This is the question to be resolved by looking back. A partial answer was indicated by the poised and trained cadets who departed their ROTC Summer Camp on 5 August 1955 to return to their universities and schools throughout the United States. -1.1---i. ..,..i .... --L.l.i.,. -i..-.ii ' -. - i 1-1 '.,... --ni - - 1... . .. Hastings The Quartermaster General DEPARTMENT 0E THE ARMY IJFFICE UF THE ILUARTERMASTER GENERAL WASHIHGTUH, D. II. TO: THE MEMBERS OF THE ROTC CADETS: The Quartermaster Corps is both pleased and proud to have so many of you fine young Americans serve at Fort Lee during your ROTC Summer Encampment. lt is our sincere wish that your 1955 Summer Encampment training will prove to be both profitable and enjoyable, and that- as a result of such training--your understanding of the Corps' logistical and tactical responsibili- ties will be greatly enhanced. I Each of you serves at Fort Lee as a representative of a leading American College or University, the schooling which you have undergone to date will play an important role in deter- mining your future success in whatever career you choose upon completing your formal educa- tion. By the same token, the Campus at Fort Lee is the scene of a part of your preparation for the defense of democracy and the preservation of a free worldg your earnest participation in the courses offered here may some day result in the triumph of Truth over falsehood, of Hope over fear, and of Godliness over godlessness. If this be so, then indeed you will have con- tributed much to society. May we wish you well in days to come. As Fort Lee Alumni we will always have a common bond, and as citizens and soldiers we stand ready to work together for the good of all Deoliles. K ' U K. L. HASTINGS Major General, USA The Quartermaster General ,V-V' '-fc Major General F. G. Holbrook Commanding General, Quartermaster Training Command me -si GIIARTERMASTER TRAINING GGMMANII OFFICE GF THE GGMMANIIING GENERAL FORT LEE, VIRGINIA T0 ALL MEMBERS OF THE QUARTERMASTER ROTC SUMMER CAMP The history of America is rich in the tradition of the civilian soldier entering into the Armed Forces during times of conflict to defend his country and, on occasion, to give his life in this cause. Only through the prompt and efficient service of such civilian soldiers have the military successes of America been possible. You, the students and ROTC Cadets of today, are to be among the leaders of the armies of tomorrow. On your shoulders will rest the security and successes of our nation. It is truly every American's hope that it will never be necessary for you to leave your civilian life and enter active service as a leader in combat. However, it is nevertheless incumbent upon each and every one of you to be prepared to face such a call to duty if the need arises. To be trained and prepared is the key to success in providing for the future require- ments of American military endeavors. By your voluntary participation in the advanced ROTC program and your attendance at the 1955 Quartermaster ROTC Summer Camp, you have clearly demonstrated that you recognize your responsibility as an American citizen and patriot. Through the training you have received as a Cadet at your academic institution and while in training at Fort Lee, you have been prepared to assume, if necessary, the role of a military leader. ' Many of you, through your ability, initiative, and interest will be honored with com- missions as officers in the Regular Army. To you, as well as to your fellow Cadets commissioned as officers in the Army Reserve, the training you have received during the summer encampment will be of paramount importance. The responsibility to assist in leading the America of the future is yours. The respon- sibility is great, and our continued progress, personal liberty, and national security will in large measure depend upon your leadership and guidance. I am confident that you will bear this respon- sibility with honor, dignity and assurance. F. C. HOLBROOK Major General, USA Commanding Colonel Merton Singer Deputy Camp Commander University of Pennsylvania HEAIIIIUARTERS RUTII SUMMER CAMP FURT lEE, VIRGINIA 5 August 1955 TO: All' Cadets Completing the 1955 Quartermaster ROTC Summer Camp U l would like to take this means of congratulating each of you individually for complet- ing the rigid training of Summer Camp and for displaying excellent spirit and morale through- out. Your enthusiasm and esprit have contributed materially to the success of this encampment. ' As logistics officers, it will be your job to support the combat leader and to render him more effective in every conceivable way. As such, we, as logistics officers, are likened to those unsung heroes, The Seven Mules of the famous Notre Dame football team of yesteryear. Most sports fans to this day can tell you the names of the famous Four Horsemen of Notre Dame, but none know very much about The Seven Mules, without whom The Four Horsemen would probably not have existed. A ' As logistics officers of our Army, it will be your duty to deliver logistic support in the right quantity, to the right place at the right time-and you will have to do all this-before the customer knows what logistic support he requires. imagination and foresight are indispen- sable tools of logistics officers. l urge you to develop these faculties and to project your thoughts ahead at all times. lt is our job as logistics officers to do all the logistics planning and thinking for the combat leaders. As you go forth to receive your commission or to complete your senior year at college and ultimately to receive your commission, the best wishes of all the present officers in the Army go with you. Sincerely yours, MERTON SINGER Colonel, OMC Deputy Camp Commander I E VA ..w ' , L' if , v,' sb O4 6 0 ff , 3 9 '08 f. ! Each cadet undoubtedly felt some degree of pride at having successfully completed summer training. The memories of Fort Lee will always linger with each man, for, who could forget the many friends made and the knowledge gained during the encampment. lt had been an excellent six weeks, but everyone was happy to leave hot and humid Virginia and the rigorous training program. True, it had helped prepare each student for one of the most important jobs in our nation - - - that of becoming a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. 94 A 8 M COLLEGE OF TEXAS Cleveland, Dan Collins, Thomas Arthur Connelly, Webb Louis Cooper, James Carter Denny, David McCall, Jr. Eichman, Frank Fred, Jr. Faltin, Eugene Chester Garner, John Joel, Jr. Howell, Hulen Wayne Jacobson, Norman Herbert Kubitz, John Ray LePori, Firmin Germain, Jr. McBryde, Rankin Nowlin Netterville, Calvin Samuel Parkham, Byron Andrew Powell Staples, Frederick Brock Stephenson, William Robert Stevens, George Thomas Tiras, Harvey Seymour Theriot, Thomas Derriel Trim, Floyd Clifton CLEMSON AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE Able, Rudy L.
