- Cautious expression Couples enjoy time together This year students were cau- tioned not to overly express their feelings for one another in the halls. However, most cou- ples seemed to cope with this caution. On the traditional carnation- sale day, the guys bought flow- ers for their special girls. Roses were also a popular gift item. Holding hands was also a pop- ular trend for couples, at least they could embrace one anoth- er's palm. Junior Sheila Wilkie said that a typical date for her and her boyfriend was out to eat and a movie. Some couples went to near- by parties, but not many - parties were generally where couples got together but not went together. Other couples enjoyed being in the outdoors together. Play- ing tennis, swimming, running, and riding bikes were some popular ways couples spent quality time together and got a little exercise. Whenever or wherever it was, couples always seemed to find time to share together. Senior Paul Prado asks his girlfriend, junior Sheila Wilkie why she won't dance at the sock hop held Oct 2 in the girls' gym. Junior Christina Ramirez says goodbye to her boyfriend, senior Brent Lane, before they go to their sixth-period classes. l sz 1 e l Junior Randy Copeland borrows a pen from his girlfriend, junior Lisa Eberwein, on his way to his third-period English class. La if? is ti Sports scene Lions meet the challenge As the wind began to cool and the leaves began to fall, the sports scene heated up. After last year's spring Blue and White game, the football team looked very promising this year. However, several in- juries to key players at the start of the season dashed Coach Charlie Lyles' hopes for a win- ning season. The varsity volleyball team got off to a great start, and once again the powerful spikers were contenders for district cham- pionship honors. The girls' cross-country track team acquired a new coach this year. Ms. Cathy Webb coached athletics at Viv- ian Field Junior High School be- fore joining the coaching staff here, taking the role of the for- mer coach, Mr. Larry Brooks. With the chill of fall in the air, the tennis team challenged the Highland Park Scots in a dual match on RLT's courts in Oc- tober. Led by Coach Kerry Smith, the team looked forward to a promising season. Ms. Jenifer Thomas, the new swim team coach, assumed the duties at the helm of the school's aquanauts. Coach Thomas guided the volleyball squad at Grand Prairie last year before she started coaching here. Junior Kimberly Dean commented, I like our new coach a lot. She's young, en- ergetic, and really excited about things, and that makes us get excited. She changed practices to mornings, and now we're practicing with Newman Smith. I think these changes are work- ing to our advantage. .J Senior Michaele Drake, varsity volleyball Senior Diana Arbelaez concentrates on her scrimmage match with one of her teammates after school at the back tennis courts. player, prepares to set the ball.
