LET IT SNUW LET IT SNUIM LET IT SNOW WILL IT EVER S TOP?? Will we ever graduate? This was the question of the year as heavy snows caused us to miss day after day of school. Every winter, students anxiously watch the weather reports to spot the much hoped for snow, A couple of years ago students were given tive free snow days, But, after two years of not using all of them, the School Board cut it to two,' just when we needed it most! Everyone loves a break in the routine and a chance to sleep, but this year brought more breaks than we have ever had since we 've been in school. Near the end of January weather reports started talking about the chance a of a big snow. And on January 21, the snow started falling around midnight and continued all day Thursday, not once letting up. Seven- teen to twenty inches fell before it was all over, and Winston-Salem all but shut down while it dug itself out of the storm. The mall was closed for two days, businesses shut down, and school was closed for seven days. Below Freezing temperatures and cloudy skies kept the snow from melting, and it wasn't until the first week of February that we began to see green again. Days started dropping off of our Spring Break, gradua- tion was pushed back, and there was talk of going to school on Saturdays. Then, just as the huge snow piles on the sides of the roads were almost gone, we were hit once again with a winter storm. February 16 brought snow and ice that made roads more hazardous than the previ- ous wet snow. Four more days of school were missed, and we had to suffer through a Saturday make-up day. By now Spring Break was down to four days, and students were beginning to change their minds about the excitement of snow. Beach plans had to be changed as graduation was moved to June 12. Just when we thought it was all over, a slight chance of sleet was predicted for February 27, That slight chance of sleet turned out to be seven to eight inches of snow. One more day of school was missed, and our world was white once again until heavy rains washed the snow away. After missing twelve days of school, we were now down to three days of Spring Break , and there was a possibility of school the day after the Prom. A total of thirty inches of snow officially fell this winter of 1986-87 - the most we've had since 1960. lt definitely was a white winter! The question is . , will it ever stop? 28fFeatu es ...1--' The roads were lmpassible for several days after the heavy snow. Mailmen were unable to deliv- er our mail for the first couple of days after the snow. Their motto, through rain, sleet, and snow was put aside. 1 1I 1 guuunulnnqltn

,- J' f fvig.-'lx As 17 inches of snow covered Winston-Salem, the landscape turned beautiful- V white. There was something peaceful and serene about this bright and snowy leld. lt was the perfect setting for sledding carelessly down a snowbank or for itting penslvely, watching the blrds and squirrels hunt for food. There were 'lenty of activities to keep us busy while we were out of school. H' a . Footprints in the snow didn't last very long as the snowy clouds dropped more snow on top of them. Featufesf29
