Me ‘ eee During the 1960’s and 1970’s the Fine Arts Program sponsored such celebrities as Bob Richards, the Olympic gold medal winner; David Brinkley, news commentator for NBC; Mark Van Doren, poet, short story writer, and educator; and Yevgeny Yev- tushenko, Russian poet. 1971 brought changes to Reynolds. Girls were allowed to wear pants to school. A new parking lot was built adjacent to the auditorium. A change in the distribution of students within the school system to allow for better integration brought n ew students to Reynolds. The new parking lot was built in 1971. 27

28 ‘““Amid the pines she proudly stands...” DECA, a distributive education program, was formed in 1964. The Ebony Society, a black culture or- ganization, began and the Leo’s Club were formed in 1969. VICA, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, was formed in 1970. Also in 1970, the Industrial Cooperative Training Program began at Reynolds. College admission offices view Reynolds as a school of tradition. In the past, students from Reynolds have been well-prepared for college. RJR has encouraged self- discipline through academic pur- suits. The community proudly recognizes Reynolds as having a good staff as well as disciplined students.
