24 Reynolds swim team started in 1962. The Girls’ Council, a service club, was organized by Miss Janie Weaver in 1965. Also in 1965 the Industrial Arts Club was formed. The Jr. Civitans, a service club, was formed in 1971 in co-operation with the. Senior Civitans of Winston- Salem. Also in 1971, the Anchor Club began at R.J.R. In 1972 the Outing Club was formed to promote interest in outdoor activities. Miss Bonnie Lees “Sparks= represented Reynolds as Miss Teenage Win- ston-Salem in 1965. The 1967 Black and Gold Queen, Miss Patsy Johnson, became Miss North Carolina in 1971.

Late Years ue,’ Landing remains popular meeting place. All aboar d! Mr. Claude R. Joyner, principal, retired in 1962, after having served as a teacher for eight years and principal for 29 years. He was suc- ceeded by Mr. John Tandy, who remained principal from 1963- 1966. The Junior Varsity cheerleaders were formed in 1960. Also in 1960, the girls’ Varsity Speedball team won the State Championship. In 1962, the swimming team was formed at Reynolds. R.J.R. chose a dog to be its first football mascot in 1963. In 1964, the girls’ speed- ball team won the city-county con- ference. Also in 1965, the varsity football team gained the 4A state championship. 23

The Board of Education spent $400,000 to renovate the school. The renovation added a new slate roof, plumbing, heating, elec- trical equipment, paint, plaster, and flooring. In 1966, Mr. John Tandy resigned and assistant principal Robert D. Deaton became prin- cipal. While Mr. Deaton has served as principal, curriculum changes have been made. In 1971, Social Studies courses were changed from yearly courses to quarter courses to provide selection in courses. In 1972, English yearly courses were changed to semester courses.
