RIALS Ge ceawrbic rps i ian atime stint % Se ee Beginnings Richard Joshua Reynolds High School opened her doors to students in February 1923. Students entered a yet unfinished building to continue classes that they had started at Winston High on Cherry Street. Winston High School, more commonly called Cherry Street High, was started in 1908 and served as one of the two main city high schools until it was destroyed by fire on January 9, 1923. Prior to this, the first city high school in the school system was West End School, founded in 1884, one year after the start of the Winston-Salem school system. In 1908 when Winston High was built, West End made the transition to an elementary school. Winston High for whites and East Winston for blacks then served as the two city high schools until 1923 when Reynolds replaced the burned Winston High. For several weeks after Winston High burned, students attended classes in the building of St. Paul’s Church, prior to coming to the Reynolds campus. Throughout the spring of 1923, while students attended classes, construction continued. Reynolds High, then unnamed, was planned to be not only a high school but also a cultural center for the system. It was going to contain the largest art gallery in North Carolina. It was also supposed to house a center for vocational training in the school system. According to the original plans, there was supposed to be a twin building to the present main building, which was to be located on the other side of the auditori- um. Because of the lack of money, this building was never built. Also because of lack of funds, Reynolds never became the cultural center anticipated. Money for the school auditorium was donated as a memorial to Richard Joshua Reynolds by his widow, then Mrs. Johnston, thus causing the school to be soon named in his honor. Upon completion, the auditorium was dedicated in May 1924. The school was built on what was originally an extensive tract of good land called Silver Hill Plantation. It was built on the top of the bluff to overlook a meadow. Shortly after, this meadow, a 47-acre tract of land, was donated by the Hanes family to be a perpetual site for recreational and educational purposes for school children only, thus acquiring the name Hanes Park. At one time, a Reynolds student was able to stand at the top of the bluff and view all the schools Wills he attended as a part of his public education in this system. The building was placed so that its. back was to the auditorium and its side to Hawthorne Road because of the fact that a street had been proposed to cut from Hawthorne to Northwest Boulevard approximately where today a tunnel goes under Northwest Boulevard from the gym to the campus. Thus the Reynolds main building would have faced that proposed street. The classical architecture of Reynolds is of Southern Georgian or Colonial style and may be seen from many points of the city. This architecture did not deviate much from the typical school architecture of the time in which it was built. The main en- trance is a masterpiece in architecture, of the Roman Corinthian order, studied as to proportion after the Pantheon in Rome. The school had one of the first air condi- tioning systems of its type in the state. Large blocks of ice were kept in the basements of the main building and auditorium. Huge fans blew air across these blocks and into vents which opened into most rooms in the buildings. An underground tunnel was built to connect the main building with the auditorium to allow students to remain under shelter when going between buildings. mye jie ¥ sks. Early Years During her early years, R.J. Reynolds was one of the best known schools in North Carolina. Mr. John Watson Moore, a former teacher, football coach, and later prin- cipal at Winston High, accompanied his students to Reynolds where he remained principal until 1933. Reynolds’ first tragedy occurred when Leo Caldwell was fatally injured in a foot- ball game early in the school year of 1923. The first Leo Caldwell medal was awarded in 1923. In later years, the award was changed from a medal to a trophy. In 1924, the American Legion of Winston-Salem presented Reynolds with two flagpoles. On November 24, 1924, Houdini, the great magician, gave a performance in Reynolds auditorium. Chief mode of transportation Jitter bug? Mr. John Watson Moore, Principal New gymnasium The school newspaper, “Pine Whispers”, was begun in 1925. Elizabeth Wilkinson was the first editor-in-chief. In 1925, Reynolds won five awards in the state-wide musical contest. Reynolds had an overall football record of 8-1 in 1926. The girls’ hockey team won the state championship the same year. In 1926 RJR’s drama team accepted an invitation to give a performance in New York City. The Grand Trophy of the High School Music Contest in North Carolina became a “personal possession” when Reynolds won the trophy for the fourth year in a row in 1927. Reynolds won the State Baseball Championship in 1927. Both the Reynolds’ boxing and wrestling teams won the state championship in 1928. During these early years Reynolds had its own print shop. At one time, the shop printed all educational materials for the school system. The shop also printed the school annual and newspaper. Thus the print shop, at one time, gained the reputation of being one of the best high school print shops in the state. Until World War II, all students were required to attend a morning chapel twice a week. Wednesday morning chapels were set aside for devotional programs, while Friday morning chapels were set aside for educational purposes and pep rallies. All football games were played on Hanes Field on Saturday afternoons. Because of insufficient bleachers, the fans stood, sat on the ground, or ran up and down the side- lines cheering and yelling. Saturday nights, after the game, there was an open house at RJR. on the first floor. Each spring, the seniors looked forward to the “Senior Class Picnic” which was held at a local picnic area. All students brought a “basket” for an old-fashioned style picnic. Auditorium dedicated to R.J. Reynolds 11 Transportation for students included walking, bicycling, and riding the streetcars. Students walked from as far away as Salem and Southside. Ard- more was considered close to the school. Enough students rode bikes to school to necessitate large bicycle racks with locks. Before and after school, special streetcars brought students from town without their having to transfer. In 1938, the first parking permit was given to a student. At this time, all teachers parked their cars behind the auditorium. During the earliest years of Reynolds, school was never closed for snow. Everybody left home early to walk in order to get to school on time. For several years, in the late twenties and early thirties, double school ses- sions were held because of the large number of students. Each group of students came for half a day. At first, Reynolds included the eighth through eleventh grades. When the state added the twelfth year requirement, the eighth grade was shifted to Wiley Elementary School. At a much later time, the eighth grade was again shifted to Reynolds. They occupied the third floor and continued under an elementary school program while the ninth through twelfth grade students used the first and second floors. Homeroom periods were thirty minutes in length. This allowed time for teacher counseling and guidance, daily devotional programs, student com- mittee meetings, and course planning. At one time, a superior student could skip half a year’s work and graduate e arly. Therefore there were two J unior- Senior Proms and two graduations occurring in January and June. Each student selected a four year course in Latin, foreign language, science, or in commercial subjects. He then took his specialty course each of the four years along with his required course. Homerooms were organized according to the courses taken by the students. The Student Cooperative Government, based on the Honor Code, has been the most important organization at Reynolds. Encouraged by the principal and faculty, the students, themselves, assumed the responsibility of setting a good example for their fellow classmates. For years, public opinion frowned on the school’s sponsoring dances. Therefore the Junior-Senior was not a prom. The juniors entertained the se- niors in the auditorium with dramatic performances. Later, after the perform- ance, the seniors were taken to the highly decorated gym for the Grand March of the school celebrities, followed by a reception. ences Seated: Miss Mary Wiley, Miss Hazel Stephenson, Miss Lucille Edwards, Miss Ruth Troutman. Reynolds became even more involved in sports when Norman Stockton became interested. He backed the football program and encouraged Mr. Tandy to come to Reynolds. Mr. Tandy, in turn helped to build the students’ enthusiasm. The Senior Service Club was formed in 1948, a year after the formation of the Key Club. The Key Club had its first follies in ‘58. Also in ‘58, the Pep Board Council was formed, and at last, Reynolds had co-ed cheerleaders. Not only was Reynolds growing in size, but in achievements as well. The first football cham- pionship was won in ‘52. The track team won its first championship in ‘53. 14 Mr. John Tandy, football coach State Championship — Dec. 3, 1952 SECT emgar RRR VERNER E UNE eames ee ae eH wee Fie aw aie Phen ee ee ae es Lae a: eSoeto her SE Above: Reynolds cheerleaders, 1954 Below: Reynolds Majorettes, 1954 6 ‘6 SIOMO[ pure S}Ie3H,, cSél ‘6 QZ yore ‘Wold sulids 17 Located near the Buena Vista area, Reynolds contained much of the wealth of Winston-Salem. Also Reynolds was the largest high school in the system, so it was the “biggest and “best” in almost every way. Academically speaking, Reynolds was the best for two reasons. Because of its size, Reynolds could offer a larger variety of courses. Also Reynolds attracted the best teachers in the system. Most local colleges and business firms were exceptionally impressed with Reynolds students. Being the largest school, Reynolds had a tremendous selection of students from which to choose sports teams. Gray offered the only tough competi- tion for Reynolds’ teams. we a . a A Senior Service Club cleans pool, 1958-59 nl UFR B 19 Coached by Mr. Tom Beach, the Demons won their first State AA Basketball Championship in 1949. If you let him kiss you, he wishes you were more reserved, If you don’t, he’ll seek consolation eleswhere. If you flatter him, he thinks you’re simple, If you don’t, he thinks you don’t understand him. If you go with other fellows, he thinks you’re fickle, If you don’t, he thinks no one else will have -you. We can’t get along with them, but what would our football team be without those boys! GIRLS If a girl walks, she’s not popular. If she drives, she’s a wheel. If she doesn’t drive, she stays at home. If she watches football practice, she’s a flirt. If she doesn’t, she has no school spirit. If she dances with lower classmen, she robs the cradle. If she doesn’t, she’s a snob. If she dates out-of-town boys, she’s too good for the local boys. If she doesn’t, she stays home be- cause the local Joes are too good for her. If she gripes about the whole mess, the boys laugh at her. Printed in “Pine Whispers”, December 3, 1957. White socks and crewcut. Mrs. Lucinda Moser In 1953-54, the Reynolds cindermen clinched their first state championship in track through great team courage and stamina. On the gridiron, the fighting Demons captured another _ title. Coached by Mr. John Tandy, the 1952-53 football team won the State Championship. The Pep Board Council was or- ganized in 1958 by _ school-spirited students to aid the school and spur their teams to victory. Another unusual facet which helped give Reynolds its individuality was the animal heads which perched on the walls in the lobby and in the halls. Animals included a lion, antelope, wart hog, gnu, rhinoceros, etc. The students were devoted to an old Civil War cannon which was mounted in front of the Reynolds Auditorium. Later it was donated to a scrap metal drive during World War II. Animals lurk in the halls. 21 1952 football team won State championship. bi 22 Late Years ue,’ Landing remains popular meeting place. In 1966, Mr. John Tandy resigned and assistant principal Robert D. Deaton became prin- cipal. While Mr. Deaton has served as principal, curriculum changes have been made. In 1971, Social Studies courses were changed from_ yearly courses to quarter courses to provide selection in courses. In 1972, English yearly courses were changed to _ semester courses.
