Mr LaCoste Principal This is a meaningful year for all of us at Murphy as our school has come to be called We have existed and functioned as a school for ten years A decade is an important time It is a time to celebrate our past our present and our future Our past has seen much growth In student enrollment for example we went from approximately 700 to 1400 We ve now started a decline and expect to be back to 1200 in a few years In activities and traditions we ve also grown For example from single athletic teams for all students we came to provide a team for each grade level This too has begun to decline unfortunately I d like to focus on one tradition which we ve built over the decade and of which we are very proud This one we must not allow to decline Murphy students and faculty from what I can see and read have completed more socially conscious Long Island We have collected food for many needy groups and individuals we have raised money to help support hungry children overseas and migrant workers on Long Island we have collected toys for Head Start and other needy organizations our art and industrial arts groups have constructed and donated to hospitals schools and charitable organizations our clubs and bands have contributed time and services to the elderly and hospitalized to list but a few examples Dr Robert Cushman Murphy and his wife Grace both gave much of their lives to efforts in conservation and preservation of the environment for all of us and future generations Similarly we can be proud that our staff and students took the lead in community beautification last year by covering the graffitti with an appropriate bicentennial paint job on the L I R R bridge over Nicoll Road thereby enhancing the visual environment for all Three Vilage residents As part of our decade celebration let s all pledge to continue building on this great social and humanitarian tradition so appropriate inthe school named after Dr Robert Cushman Murphy I y I l I humanitarian activities Cdoing good things to help othersj than any other junior high school in our area of
