Like everyone else, I enjoy win- ning and like to have the girls work toward that end. However, it seems to me that you must give them the knowledge and the skills required for the sport. THEN allow the girls to work to the best of their ability. When, as competitors, they have done their best, let's hope they then real- ize that their best is all we expect of them. Girls in sports competition and physical education do encounter situations that are not available in the classroom. These experiences have lifetime value. Learn- ing to win and to lose gracefully, learning to enjoy lifetime physical activities, learning to have enduring satisfaction through personal, family and community sports is worth any coach's time and effort. lst ROW - Elaine Neighbors, Sebri inda Mills, Renee Sessions, Becky Bruner, Sherry Harper. 2nd ROW - Vanessa Kelley Letr1c1a Blankenship, Jan Bussellhrenda Grant Twyla Mitcham, Nancy Richards, Deborah Clanton, Pat Neighbors - Coach. In many games they had to come from behind to win. Considering that they had only a few weeks of practice before the season opened, they had never played together, there was only one returning varsity player, and that they averaged about six inches shorter than every other team in the district, the year went very well. There was a battle for the district title with the deciding game between Quitman and Commerce going into post-district play. Although this game was lost, it was an exciting and rewarding season. l' , t Help her , Twyla Zip, zip, let's rip!! In pre-season play, the team had a lot of good wins and finished well in the tour- naments. They started district play looking very strong, but had one big stumbling block - COM- MERCE. The chance to play for the district crown came down to the last game of the season against Prairiland. If we won, there would be a three way tie between Quit- man, North Lamar, and Prairi- land. Both teams played hard, but it just wasn't written for us. We're all proud of our basketball team, they did a good job this sea- son. After district play had ended. THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS rated them twelfth in the state. A nice finish, but not the one we anticipated . I 5 Coach Delbert Ballard Head Basketball Coach In coaching basketball, I feel I must be able to analyze each player according to his capabilities and his potential. I must know when to praise a player and when to correct him. I feel that the most important part of a coach's responsibilities to his players is to set an example that will help the boys to be better citizens after playing for him, especially from the standpoint of self- control, teamwork, desire to excel and to create a clean wholesome mind for the better things in life. As coaches and teachers of young men and women, we must teach our players how to be good sports as winners and, also, good sports as losers. I often think that IF while I have been coaching these eighteen years, that IF I have made one boy or girl a better person while playing for me, then all the suc- cesses and failures were well worth the pressures of coaching. g f! TENNIS TEAM uke Dennise Atkins Hargrove. STANDING - odd, Andytljltnbrey, Rob- Pat Warel, Joel Nis- Ballard. - Brian Neighbors , T Traditionally, tennis in Quitman receives very little support. With enthusiasm for the sport growing all over the country, the size of the tennis team also seems to be growing. Almost any day of the week the tennis courts are full of people waiting for a chance to play. With more players, we're looking forward to a good season. Get away! On guard ! E 3 Ready! ! GOLF The entire golf team for 1976 is made up of Robin Ballard and Les Letsinger. Golf is, unfortu- nately, another spring sport which receives very little sup- port. But unlike tennis, the team seems to be dwindling instead of growing. Part of the lack of par- ticipation and support could be because of the inconvenience in finding a place to practice. The nearest golf course is about ten miles away. Despite all the trou- ble, we know Robin and Les will do their best and have a good year. PH .
