gyrffcilcon the yearbook of quincy college quincy, illinois a four year liberal arts college conducted by franciscon fathers of the sacred heart province we dedicate this book to st. francis — to him whose life was simple, pure, unaffected, to this little man, life was but o pilgrimage to heaven, he lived as though it were only a day ' s journey away — no need to gather the trinkets of worldly treasures, possessing and wanting no earthly things, he enjoyed all creatures, treating them as a sort of kin through the universal fatherhood of God. the fascination of this simplicity of vision, this life without pretense, this reverence for all creatures explains the popularity of the poverello even after seven hundred years, we students of this franciscan college are not ashamed to have fallen under his spell, and wishing to show our appre- ciation for his influence we dedicate this book to st. francis. PHOTO BY FABIAN BACHRACH to the students and faculty q.c. = quality control, quality control must be accentuated on american college campuses, since by 1970 there will be seventy per cent more men and women of college age than there are now. enrollments at quincy college will continue to increase proportionately but faculty-student responsibility and enthusi- asm for high-quality education must be maintained and even improved. faculty members and students together can keep a stimulating intellectual environment at quincy college where student initiative and faculty motivation will make the q. c. in quincy college stand for quality control and preserve high educational stature amid the mathematical certainty of a greatly increased enrollment. may God bless us all. very rev. pius barth, o.f.m., ph.d. minister provincial chairman, board of control to the graduates and collegians your upbringing and education give you a personal blueprint for living, it is your personal responsibility to build your life on it. faithfulness and loyalty will bring an unlooked-for reward, the realization that there is far more happiness in thinking, planning, working for others than for yourself, a truth which explains your parents, the priests and lay faculty of quincy college, and the happiness they know in life. with cordial blessing, his excellency william a. o ' connor bishop of Springfield in illinois I dear students. it is fitting that you have dedicated this edition of the gyrfalcon to St. francis of assisi and in particular to his spirit of simplicity, herein we find the explanation of the spirit of quincy college and the reason why it is the friendliest college in america. simplicity means not ignorance but directness or the absence of all duplicity, the little poor man of assisi had the most direct and practical approach to knowledge and the most direct personal love of Jesus Christ, his example illuminates the path to truth as we travel it together in a friendly spirit at quincy college. rev. julian woods, o.f.m. president board of control of quincy college rev. herman doerr, o.f.m., very rev. eiigius weir, o.f.m., rev. wilbert hegener, o.f.m., very rev. pius barth, o.f.m., rev. terence thomas, o.f.m., rev. eustace struckhoff, o.f.m., rev. innocent swoboda, o.f.m. a straight line is the shortest distance between two points, that ' s simple, but a straight line is often difficult to comply with, such as the lines leading to the objective of a college education. at q. c. one is confronted with a challenge — to gain an education in four short years— to force oneself from the realm of adolescence to the far away point of maturity, competence and self reliance. there are three lines here at quincy — simplicity of friendliness, simplicity of cheerfulness, simplicity of informality, these are guiding reins through a four year span — undiverging, straight, simple — penetrating through all activities. simplicity is the phrase upon which the variations of our daily college life are developed, it is the theme of this yearbook. father dunstan velesz registrar crowds gather as terry sings to boys king george reigns in kangaroo court back at the union ruth quin and pete gannon sing freshmen creatures lower than the lowest worm suddenly come face to face with the mighty upperclassmen. peering out from under green beaked beanies they quiver in apprehension no, the mail isn ' t here yet colleen powers, ellie woulfe, and jim kennedy socialize in the social hall father paul edward kimmich department of english family portrait and then aristotle said Salome before the dance after the dance who dropped that head? ■ father august reyling department of education if l p j 1 the core of y c s discussion demands a pause for thought i don ' t want one for the road econ club peek-a-boo! hurry up, it ' s hot just a little sliver ntholic xouth marilyn burgess dick overheul act 3 holidaze get off my toe! freshman ha!ey ■ it was a real nice clam bake oh, just a little one? maureen tallcott as julie jordan norm bickhaus as billie bigelow smiling jack dick thompson — guard ■ -4 edsel bester — forward monday morning 4 Connie wilkin phi kappa chi 1 queen candidate- southwestern sun festival, texas who ' s who among students in american universities and colleges frank longo, torn o ' driscoll, edie koiaz, shirley spcinhower, joann schmitt, mary ann amen, maureen tallcott, jan crescio suddenly it ' s spring spring formal wass hank gualdoni
