THE TIGER I ADMINISTRATION SENIORS ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS STUDENT LIFE ADVERTISEMENTS • INDEX • • Advertisers • Faculty • Organizations • Students 2 LOOK TO THIS DAY Iu OR yesterday is al- ready a dream, And to- morrow is only a vision; But today, well lived, makes every Yesterday a dream of happiness, And every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, there- fore, to this day. Such is the Salutation of the Dawn. from The Sanskrit 3 Mr. James A. Shanks Principal Dedication The 1964 Staff dedicates THE TIGER to our Principal, James A. Shanks, who is himself dedi- cated. Mr. Shanks is a leader in educational, civic and religious activities. An avid reader with firm convictions, he believes in practicing what he' preaches. He has served Q.H.S. for forty years and is well-known for his genuine interest in the students, their abilities and achievements. A staunch supporter of the athletic program, Mr. Shanks faithfully stands on the yardline at the football games and is always near the team at basketball games. He is highly respected by the student body because of his concern for and his loyalty to Quincy High School. Their Goal Is the Success of Q.H.S. COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD—SEATED, left to right: E. H. The County School Board of Gadsden County consists of five members whose purpose is to prescribe the policies for the schools of this county. The Board mem- bers are elected by popular vote for a four-year term and they receive a set salary. Each member represents a different one of the five districts into which this county is divided. These precautions are taken to insure a strong, effective, fair- minded School Board working to make an effective, progressive school system. Whether selling tickets at the games, chaperoning parties or serving in one of his many other extracurricular roles, he has proved to be a reliable friend. No matter how busy he is, Mr. Streetman is always ready to lend an ear to any of the students' prob- lems. In the nine years he has been here, he has earned the respect and admiration of everyone. MR. HAROLD STREETMAN If anyone can bring a smile to the faces of Quincy pupils, it is Mrs. Hampton. By her inexhaustible ener- gy, patience and cheerfulness, she brightens the routine and contributes her share to making the school op- erate smoothly. Lost? Here at Quincy the stu- dents know where to take their prob- lems. Mr. Eubanks, the guidance coun- selor, is always available with infor- mation and understanding to help them tackle their troubles. They deserve thanks for a job well done. Mr. Dalton, the caretaker of Quincy Junior-Senior High School, works hard to keep the school and its grounds in good condition. His job requires his ver- satility in everything from doing electrical and plumbing chores during school hours to helping decorate for parties in his spare time. It takes such a man behind the scene as Mr. Dalton to maintain a well-kept school. 20 In memory of her who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; Who has gained the respect of intelligent man and the love of children; Who has filled her niche and accomplished her task; Who leaves the world better than when she found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; Who has never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; Who looked for the best in others and gave the best she had. She was to be a senior at Quincy High School. Sandy was a part of us—the Senior Class of '64. Like all of us, she was just beginning to realize the complexities of living. She was on the threshold of life, becoming aware of the value and majesty of simply being. We have all been explorers, traveling down the road of life side by side. Sandy has now taken a different road. She has left us. We must continue down our road of life, but some- day we will meet Sandy again. Until then, we can only hope she knows that we have pro- found esteem for her . . . because she was the first, therefore, perhaps the best. Sandra Horper 39 From all these seniors come the select few who are chosen as Senior Superlatives. The Senior Class of 1964, after surviving twelve crowded years of school with all its trials and tirbulations, is finally ready to leave Q.H.S. These years of school, growth and fun have molded each individual into a distinctly special someone with certain characteristics and personality quirks. These traits are a deciding factor in the selection of the Senior Superlatives. The senior class votes for and selects those seniors who are super in some way. The results are kept secret until Class Night, when a class officer names the Prettiest, Wittiest, Most Popular and so on. This is the suspense-filled attraction which everyone awaits anxiously. No matter what the title, each superlative is proud and honored. Lynda and Eddie are delighted to find their names on the list of 1964 Senior Superlatives. 44 Student Council Emphasizes Democracy Student Council representatives make plans for the forthcoming elections. Carol Crouch adds another campaign poster to the crowded bulletin board. JLtjo The Student Council has recently adopted the method of schoolwide elections for its officers. Two capable students are selected by the Council from its membership to run for each office. A week of hectic campaigning is brought to a close with a speech in assembly by each of the candidates. The student body then makes its choice by secret ballot. Eddie Taylor gives his campaign speech in assembly. He was elected President of Student Council for 1963-64. 50 Worthy Projects Meet Present Needs The assistance of the Student Council members is gratefully re- ceived by anxious seventh graders on their first school day. Parents would be lost without the helping hand of the members who guide them to their children's teachers at the November P.T.A. meeting. New students relish the welcoming spirit shown by Coun- cil members. Funds from football programs provide timely gifts to the school, such as money for the library and a mirror for the girls' room. Service projects include Homecoming, school handbooks and the Confederate Ball. Connie Munroe is interviewed by moderators Patsy Wood and Brenda Yates on the Student Council Forum. Pam Coggins and Ann Chester distribute programs at the Live Oak football game. Student Council officers discuss good selling techniques as they pre- pare to sell Student Council handbooks. 51 Hospital Enjoys Candy Stripers’ Charm Bonnie King, President, and Brigitta Bietenholz, Vice-President, assist Patti Sue Craig, Secretary-Treasurer, in a demonstration of supporting a patient correctly. Organized in February of 1963, the Candy Stripers add a new at- mosphere to the Gadsden County Hospital. They render aid on a vol- untary basis by serving trays, entertaining patients and running errands for patients and nurses. The Candy Stripers are sponsored by the Hos- pital Auxiliary. Mrs. Melba Strong acts as their faculty adviser. Girls between the ages of 16 and 18 are eligible for membership. Brigitta Bietenholz, Bonnie King, Lynda Futch and The Candy Stripers find time for a few laughs during their busy schedule while Mrs. Proctor, Patti Sue Craig replace trays after the noon meal. their supervisor, looks on. 52 New Point System Inspires Effort in N. H.S. A regular duty performed by Stewart Hinson, President; Connie Seniff, Chaplain; Angelia Brooks, Secretary; and Jimmy Barineau, Treasurer, after each six weeks grading period is checking the grades of all Q.H.S. students. Those with a 90-or-above average are listed on the Honor Roll, which is published in the GADSDEN COUNTY TIMES and THE TIGER'S TALE. Increased activity well de- scribes the 1963-64 National Hon- or Society. The newly adopted point system, which determines what members are eligible to at- tend conventions, has added an extra incentive for the members. Tuturing, the Tiger Roll and Hon- or's Day are major N.H.S. projects. The success of the National Honor Society is evidenced by the enthu- siasm displayed in these projects, both by the membership and the student body. Come rain or shine, every day of the week students are tutored by faithful N.H.S. members. Here Patsy Wood tutors in math. The last frantic moments of the night before Homecoming are captured here as some of the N.H.S. members work feverishly to finish their float. 53 Jr. Exchange Cl ill ) Makes Its Debut at Q.H.S. The first Junior Exchange Club has elected Bunny Fletcher as their first Sweetheart. The officers and sponsor gather around her in smiling recognition of this honor. After many years of trying, the Quincy Exchange Club has established a Jun- ior Exchange Club at Q.H.S. The infant club promises to make great strides with Robert Lodge, its first president. Committees are active and meetings are infor- mative and interesting. The members of the Quincy Jr. Exchange Club enjoy one of the varied programs at their regular meetings. 54 Jr. Exchangette Club Is New at Q.H.S. One of the two new youth or- ganizations begun at Q.H.S. in 1963 by the Exchange Club of Quincy is the Junior Exchangette Club. This ser- vice club is composed of girls from the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. Mrs. Sara Ruth McKeown serves as the sponsor. The Jr. Ex- changette Club is patterned after the senior Exchange Club, and like the senior club, has the motto, Unity for service. Above is the governing body of the Jr. Exchangette Club, the Board ,cf Control. They are being briefed on the constitution and by-laws of the club by Jr. Exchangettes from Tallahassee. Service is the primary aim of the Jr. Exchangette Club. The project commit- tee keeps the club busy with service proj- ects throughout the year. Two Thanksgiv- ing baskets, Christmas caroling for inva- lids and a foster child overseas are some of the service projects which the Jr. Ex- changettes participated in during 1963-64. Patsy McNeill, Patsy May, Janice Cantey and Brenda Thomas struggle with the boxes of food contributed by the Jr. Exchangettes to needy families for Thanksgiving. Brenda Yates and Lynda Futch distribute programs at the Exchange Club Talent Show. The Exchangettes helped advertise the first faculty-varsity basketball game, distributed programs at the Exchange Club Talent Show and participated in a money drive for the March of Dimes. Proceeds received from the Exchange Club Talent Show and money-making projects were used to finance service projects. 55 Quincy High 56 School Band . . . and the Band Played On QUINCY JUNIOR HIGH BAND Q.H.S. BAND MAJORETTES LYNDA FUTCH, Drum Majorette Competition sparks the band's an- nual magazine sale. The officers serve as team captains for the drive and each member competes for team prizes and individual recognition. The money earned is used to finance band trips to football games and to district and state music festivals. The money is also used to provide music materials and large instruments. The band officers count the money received from magazine sales and plan their strategy for the rest of the drive as Mr. Burns observes. The Quincy Junior High Band is a new addition to Q.H.S. this year. It consists of stu- dents from the seventh and eighth grades. Robbie Susan Story, Drum Majorette, led the band at the first football game and in the Homecoming Parade. Library Club Answers an Urgent Need Officers review the popular albums with Mrs. Strong, Library Club Sponsor. The Library Club has proven itself valuable to Q.H.S. It would be a difficult job for the library to operate without assistance from the club. Of their many duties, some of the most important are checking out materials to students, keeping ma- terials straight, mending books, posting fine no- tices, keeping a bulletin board and taking inven- tory. Jarvis LaBarre, Jimmie Ruth Howell, Donnie Clark, and Carol Ferguson study the necessary steps for threading the new projector. Delores Bryant and Brigitta Bietenholz pay their library fines to Neil Hamilton and James Fowler. The Library Club does not allow any delinquencies in the payment of past dues. 59 Quincy High Devours the TIGER’S TALE These eager reporters are on their way to sell a spicy edition of the TIGER'S TALE. When publishing day rolls around every three weeks, hushed silence abides in the homerooms as each student clutches his copy of the TIGER'S TALE. Editorials, club news, gossip columns and sports ac- counts interest students from the seventh through the twelfth grades. Mrs. Lamar, sponsor, and co-editors Carol Crouch and Eddie Taylor plan new changes in the TIGER'S TALE. This year's TIGER'S TALE has made some major changes. The size of the paper has increased 25%; the mast has been changed and a higher quality pa- per has been used. These changes have aroused in- terest and increased sales. Page editors, copy editors and photographers are hard at work. 60 Key Club Promotes Civic Service Key Club officers Jack Monroe, Hugh Thompson, Stewarf Hinson and Gary Edwards admire Key Club Sweetheart Janice Cantey before the Homecoming Parade begins. The Key Club, sponsored by the Quincy Kiwanis Club, has a well-estab- lished reputation for service at Q.H.S. and the community. Mr. Murray Langford is their faculty adviser. Each year a scholar- ship is given to a senior boy on the basis of character, scholarship and need. In or- der to secure money for the scholarship and other projects, the Key Club sells cof- fee at all home football games. They also sell Christmas trees and light bulbs. Key Clubbers load up for a district meeting. Key Club coffee really hits the spot at a cold football game. Here Topper Hampton and Eddie Taylor take their turns selling it. 61 F.H.A. Projects Help to Better Community The Future Homemakers of America promote interest in home economics and teach members to grow in the home, in the community and in the school. They are guided by their conscientious spon- sors, Mrs. Evelyn Batson and Mrs. Ruby Wolf. These Future Homemakers are busily engaged in preparing hamburgers to sell at the F.H.A. booth at the football game. The F.H.A. officers are happy and proud to announce to Allen Sircy that he is their 1963-64 Dreamboat. Allene Smith leads the discussion of the Christmas workshop sponsored by the F.H.A. 62 F.F.A. Excels in a Variety of Activities j F.F.A. officers and Bunny Fletcher, F.F.A. Sweetheart, gaze with pride at their rare Gold Emblem Award. F.F.A. students learn how to operate the woodworking machine. The annual Father-Son Banquet is made possible each year by selling hamburgers and peanuts at the football games and cokes at the basketball games. The F.F.A. also spon- sors F.F.A. calendars. Raising hogs and grow- ing corn are their projects for competition in contests. Repairing machinery is still another job that keeps the F.F.A. busy. Parliamentary Procedure Team practices for contest. 63 Patrol Stiffens Safety Rules at Q.H.S. The entire patrol is seen assembled here to be instructed by Patrolman Walsh. This year many changes have been made in Quincy's School Boy Patrol. As before, the squad is under the regulation of the City Police Department, but now there is also a school sponsor, Mr. Ridlehoover. With his aid, the twenty-six members have created membership re- quirements. In order to stay on the force, each boy must have passing grades and be of good conduct. A stronger emphasis is being placed on the enforcement of laws by the patrol also. School Boy Patrol Captain, Jimmy Bauldree, holds up traffic for Brigitta Bietenholz and Connie Munrce. 64 F.T.A. Says Experience Is a Good Teacher The Future Teachers of America gain experience by assisting the elementary school teachers once a week. They help the students read and write; they grade papers for the teachers and supervise the children on the playground. Any mem- ber may teach if he has a study hall and is suitable for the job. Problems arise when left-handed members try to show right-handed pupils how to write or when they have to remember how to print. Mrs. LaBarre, Sponsor of F.T.A., and Palsy May, President, discuss F.T.A. business. Jarvis LaBarre, Vice-President, helps pupils in Mrs. Mason's class with Brigitta Bietenholz, Secretary-Treasurer of F.T.A., listens as Mrs. Wahl's their writing. pupils read. 65 Glee Club Enhances Music for Q.H.S. Third period Glee Club students work hard to learn the music for the operetta. Through the years the Quincy High Glee Club has contributed much to com- munity entertainment. This year they performed at the P.T.A. Christmas program, assemblies, spring concert and graduation. The classes had several bake sales to earn money for the spring concert. Stewart Hinson directs sixth period Glee Club as they practice for the P.T.A. Christmas program. 66 Students and Many Quincy Citizens Melodettes and Boys' Ensemble took part in the youth concert, sponsored by the Woman's Club. The Melodettes and Boys' Ensemble, special Glee Club groups, participated in civic programs and in the youth concert, sponsored by the Woman's Club. Wayne Hayes and Brenda Thomas were , elected to represent sixth period The Sweetheart and Dreamboat of third period Glee Club are Mary Glee Club as their Dreamboat and Sweetheart. Jean Mynard and Jarvis LaBarre. 67 Thespian Plays Liven Assemblies Sugar and Spice —Chump Edwards (Donnie Bailey) rubs the injured foot of the lovely Suzanne (Jeannie Murphy) while Jane (Joyce Gray) reaches the limit of her endurance. The three Thespian officers, Raymond Gay, Vice-President; Alice Gay, Pres- ident; and Bonnie King, Secretary, gaze admiringly at the Thespian award. Three one-act plays highlight the assembly pro- grams each year. The spectators look forward to such choices as Sugar and Spice, So Early in the Morning and High Window. Troupe 160 promotes appreciation of dramatic art through the speech class, which produces the plays, and through its an- nual awards. The best actor and actress and the best supporting actor and actress are selected for special recognition. Sugar and Spice —Mr. Jones (Wayne Hayes) demands an explan- ation from Mrs. Jones (Wanda Sue Cross) about the sudden, alarm- ing behavior of their daughter, Jane. 68 BIG DOC’S GIRL Reflects Teen’s Conflicts LEFT: In the rough describes this practice scene of Peggy and Alice rehearsing their lines. BELOW: Like most sisters, Mary and Mellie Kate don't always see eye to eye. Mrs. Clayborn, played by Lynda Presnell, is beset by a serious illness which is a great concern to everyone. Big Doc, portrayed by Johnny Taylor, tries not to show his distress at the situation. Rev. Mac Creighton, played by Keith Daughtry, becomes a comfort to the family. BIG DOC'S GIRL is the story of a high school senior named Mary Clayborn, portrayed by Carol Crouch. She learned to deal with a death in the family, a marriage proposal, care of the house and the discipline of her younger sister. Big Doc, played by Johnny Taylor, and Mrs. Clayborn, Lynda Presnell, were her parents. Bill, Stewart Hinson, was an ambitious medical- school graduate. Keith Daughtry played as Rev. Mac Creighton, and Peggy Wilson and Alice Gay played the parts of Ruth and Mellie Kate, Mary's sisters. Carole Davis was cast as Mrs. Milborn. Hill patients were Donnie Clark, Charles Den- nison and Tommy Howell. Mrs. Wilbur Castellow directed the play with the assistance of Angelia Brooks, student director. 69 Brenda Thomas, Mrs. Helen Smith and Connie Munroe put the final touches on copy before it is sent to the publisher. New Equipment Makes Load Easier Carol Crouch and Bunny Fletcher work on ad pages while Gary Edwards checks on ad sales. Good management on the part of former staffs has pro- vided sufficient funds for the 1964 staff to enjoy a new ad- ding machine and a new elite typewriter. Little by little the necessary equipment is being added. The staff can now boast of its two-drawer metal filing cabinet, a pica typewriter and metal table and the two '64 purchases. 70 THE TIGER Staff’s Aspirations Run High Ooooh, my feet! groans Janice Cantey as she, Mr. Hunt and Brigitta Bietenholz end a tiring day's work of photography. Mr. Hunt, of Leonard's Studio in St. Augustine, takes and develops many pictures for THE TIGER. Patsy May, Keith Daughtry and Mike Parra more check the sports schedule. THE 1964 TIGER Staff met a terrific challenge to climb toward goals a staff never before dreamed of at Q.H.S. Four years of criticism by national asso- ciations and the continued guidance of Mrs. Helen Smith have helped improve THE TIGER. Alumni re- turn and report that THE TIGER is better than college annuals in their schools. This year's staff has made bold changes to give its subscribers a unique year- book. They sincerely hope that everyone is pleased with their work. Copyreading in the living room is a typ- ical scene as a deadline draws near. Faith- fully performing this task are Cynthia Cox, Carole Davis, Mary Jean Mynard and Lynda Presnell. 71 THE TIGER Growls-and the Junior The 22 inexperienced but eager Juniors who make up the 1964 Junior Tiger Staff face the terrifying transaction of editing THE TIGER. Selling annuals, ads and school pictures means get- ting out of class, which is good fun, but at the same time serious business and hard work. An en- during patience and a will to work are the main requisites needed to be a member of the Junior Staff. The satisfying re- ward is finally realized when the last subscriber receives his copy of THE TIGER. On the way to take ad pictures are Betty Ann Shelter, Patsy McNeill, Kaye Sanford, Mr. Martin, Dianne Peacock Martha May, Richard Gardner and Frank Morgan. Walter Dover, Connie Seniff, Jane Strickland and Christy Smith work Selling annuals are Mary Martha Massey, Rodney Joyner, Hugh Thomp- on the moneys collected sheets. son and Kathryn Morrow. 72 Annual Staff Springs into Carolyn Jeffcoat, Jimmy Barineau and Judy Hutchinson draw up their layout sheets. The Junior Staff studies the critique from the National Yearbook Association. At first the criticism seems totally unjust but after the third round with it, the juniors de- cide to make the suggested improvements. Action Sheila Rawls, Mary Louise Lester and Joel Embry review blunders in THE '63 TIGER. Mr. Watters is THE TIGER'S reason for signing a contract year after year with Taylor Publishing Com- pany. He is the cushion that smooths the rocky road of dreaded deadlines. The Junior Staff listens attentively while Mr. Watters, Taylor's representative, clears up some of the mysteries of the '63 critique. 73 THE FIGHTING TIGERS Lack of experience and an unusually large number of in- juries resulted in the worse foot- ball season for Q.H.S. since 1951. The team consisted of three sen- iors, eight juniors and one soph- omore. This apparent lack of age and experience showed in the scores. Scoring was incon- sistent and rebounding, weak. The Homecoming of 1963 was composed of many hours of preparation and planning which included hard work, tensions, fun and laughter. The contestants, the float builders, the decorators and the football players looked toward it with great excitement and anticipation. Anxious eyes gazed constantly toward the skies in hopes of a clear, windswept day in which the ceremonies could be carried out with all the pomp and dignity expected of a Q.H.S. Homecoming. When the long- awaited day finally arrived and was over, it was a day to be remembered and treasured. 95 4 Young and Foolish . . . 'Young and foolish— Why is it wrong to be?
