High school days are full of the spirit of being together, whether in games, classes, or in clubs. Throughout the year strength and ability have com- pelled and motivated the student body. From the front cover to the last page we have endeavored to capture by photography, art and writ- ten copy the unquenchable spirit and power of youth. In years to come may we be able to look hack and realize that these potentials for success were directed wisely. 3 Chapter I Trying to Inspire It has been said that the main function of a teacher is to inspire his students to learn. The ability to arouse them so that they will try to realize their greatest potentialities is a lofty goal for any teacher to reach. The paper load, the discipline and the lesson plans are three stones in any teach- er’s path; enough to make him “growl.” 5 Authority and Supervision COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD—SEATED, left to right: E. H. He helps with our dance decorations, cleans up the gym after a game, and helps the students and teachers with many other problems. He is always here to try to make our school a more comfortable one. 21 Chapter II Eager to Mature yc y -. ■ There is no graduation like that of the high school student. More people graduate from high school than from any other institution of learning. The high school seniors enjoy the ring, the song and the history of their class more than any other class graduating. The completion of high school is the first step into the adult world that severs the graduates from their homes. SALUTATORIAN Harold Young maintained a 96 2 35 average throughout high school. Many students belong to more than half of these activities. There is one obvious reason for this; a long list of activities under a senior’s name looks “great.” It would be “great” if someone could discover how more students could take advantage of all the opportunities for learning how to lead. 49 S. C. Works for Better School Johnny Taylor Susann Woodbery Parliamentarian Chaplain Shirley Cox President Harold Young Vice-President Mellany Nelson Secretary Topper Hampton Treasurer Miss Gregory Sponsor This year the Student Council has attempted to achieve many goals for the improvement of our school spirit. Their work on the Homecoming festivities was admired by all. They spent many days making preparations for the parade, the ceremonies, and the dance. The result of this work was success. They worked in many other ways to advance their purposes. Ex- amples of this are a car wash to raise money for the March of Dimes, a program to assist new students, a district committee to help the Florida Boys’ Ranch, delegates to attend district and state conventions, a bulletin board to arouse interest, and a radio program called “Student Council Forum.” They also sponsored the Confederate Ball. Some of the projects were an Honor Roll, a Scholarship Banner, the de- votionals at P.T.A. meetings, a tutoring service, the “Thought for the Day,” and the N.H.S. bulletin hoard. For special projects, they kept a scrapbook, rewrote their con- stitution, sponsored Honor Week, entered a float in the Homecom- ing Parade, and sent clothes and baskets of food at Thanksgiving and Christmas. In March the Chapter was host to the District Convention. This was the first National Honor Society Convention to be held in Quincy. We had 28 girls and only three boys, and an instructor who had never before put out a paper. This didn’t hinder us, however; and Harold’s talks in assembly gave us a sellout with ev- ery issue. The Library Club aids Mrs. Strong in the management and care of the library. One of their most outstanding contributions is the eye-catching bulletin board, which is always alive with novel demonstrations. The members of the Club feel that their experience with books, cards, and files will be a most helpful asset during their college days. Four years of membership gives a regular school credit. The majority of the members belong simply because they like the work and their sponsor. Most of the work is done during the students’ study hall periods, their homeroom periods, and their time before school. Member- ship is determined by certain standards, faculty approval, grade average, and available time. Their functions in- clude keeping a check on the Junior Staff, editing all senior pages, supervising photography, beginning ad sales before Sep- tember, selecting cover and heading style, and planning the division pages. This is a great responsibility and involves much of their time. It is a great hon- or to be on the Senior Annual Staff. They are selected by a committee composed of students and faculty members. The com- mittee considers such qualifica- tions as determination, creative ability, congeniality, patience, endurance, skill in typing, etc. Susann Woodbery, Assistant Editor; Susan West, Editor; Mrs. Smith, Sponsor. We sell the school pictures and the subscriptions to the annual to ail of the classes. It is our job to identify pic- tures. arrange them in alphabetical order, draw layout sheets, prepare them for triple copy, and write the copy for our pages. All these jobs would never get done if we didn’t have such a wonderful sponsor, Mrs. Helen Smith. She is the backbone of the entire annual, and we give our thanks to her. The ultimate goal of a student on the Junior Annual Staff is to win a position on the Senior Annual Staff. The end of fifth period doesn’t mean the end of annual work; many hours each weekend are spent around at Mrs. Smith’s house working to meet the deadlines. SEATED: Judy Peacock. Angus Hinson was the only boy on the team to be aw'arded the TALLAHASSEE DEMO- CRAT’S Big Bend Lineman of the week. He was given this honor for his performance in the Quincy vs. Florida High game. The Tigers went into this game as the underdog, but they emerged as the victors. Quincy was grimly de; termined to beat the Demons and even last year’s score. It wasn’t until the third quarter that the first score of the game was made. Quincy hit paydirt with a 20 yard pass by quarterback Joe Sanders to Frank Baker, right end, who carried the ball 26 yards for the touchdown. Jerry Maxwell, Quincy’s fullback, scored the extra point putting Quincy in the lead 7-0. Less than a minute later Florida High’s Demons retaliated with almost identical plays. The Demon’s failure to make the extra point gave the Tigers the 7-6 victory. GLENN CLARK—L.T. iMANAGERS WILSON HASH and RONNIE WOODSON JAMES ALLEN—L.T. 77 TED HUBBARD— R.T. Junior varsity football was unusu- ally good with a 4-2 season. Jimmy Taylor was the backbone of the team with his fast sprinting. Fullback La- mar Munroe with his pile-driving runs also helped to lead the team to victory. The spirit of winning ran high in all the players. This, plus their sheer determination, made them over- come their foes who were usually heavier and larger. JAKE REDMON—C. Under the leadership of Coach Bill Rogers and Cap- tains Lamar Thomas and Johnny Luten, the ’62 Base- ball Team won seven out of ten regular season games. The Tigers played in all district tournaments held in Tallahassee, winning two out of three. Jackie Bishop did not get to see much action because of ineligibility, but he did a fine job for us when he did get to play. RIGHT: Charles Owens uses height in jump shot. 84 Enthusiasm Displayed All Season 100% Teamwork We had a brand new ball club with no last year’s starters re- turning. Kenneth Jensen, returning senior with more experience than any of the returning players, led the Tigers throughout the season with rebounds and points per game. Seniors and Co-Captains, James Earnest and Charles Owens, added experience and height to the team. Kenneth Dabney and Jackie Bishop, remaining seniors, supplied the competition for starting positions and made practice more beneficial. The younger boys who showed good action through- out the season were Jack Higdon, Gary Edwards, Walter Dover, George McCall, and Toney Whitley. The spirit for practice and improvement was displayed by the entire club, making it one of the most enthusiastic years of basket- ball. Two highlights of the season were our opening victory over Chattahoochee, and a narrow defeat of Marianna. Our disadvan- tages were lack of consistent scoring and rebounding. The friendships we cultivate in the classroom carry over into our social life after school where we pursue the fads: dancing,, riding around and constantly using the phone. 87 Crowned Beauty Enjoys Distinction Miss Martha Bell is being crowned Homecoming Queen by Co-Captain Angus Hinson, while Co-Captain Jerry Maxwell holds her bouquet of chrysanthemums. As is traditional, the 1962 Homecoming was spon- sored by the Student Council. The Cheerleaders pre- sented a take-off on the “graduation” of the senior football players and led the student body in a rousing pep rally. The parade and pre-game ceremonies served as exciting preliminaries to the climactic crowning of the 1962 Homecoming Queen. After our 34-14 victory over the Port St. Joe Sharks, the Homecoming Dance, with its “Misty” theme, was the perfect ending to a perfect day. Homecoming Queen Martha Bell and escort Charles Owens reign over the game. Contestants and escorts seated for the game in the contestant box are left to right: Tommy Davis, Peggy Straughn, John Shaw Curry, Sue Anne Owens, George Rude, Rebekah Chapman. 89 Parade Creates Air of Excitement Many hours of planning sessions, hard work and fun went into each float in the colorful Homecoming Parade. The ones who judged the floats voted on those they considered to he the most beautiful, original, and appropriate. The much sought after first place award was won by Mrs. Mason’s 10-B homeroom. “Candy girls” are Carolyn Jeffcoat and Sheila Rawls. Seventh graders eagerly anticipated their first Homecoming Parade. At long last they were eligible to enter a float, and par- ticipate in the exciting fes- tivities. In fact, they not only entered but won sec- ond place. Mrs. Wilva Rog- ers’ 7-B homeroom and their winning “Shark Stew!’ are shown to the right. Riding on the float are left to right: Joyce Edmonds, Brenda Fortenberry, Richard Hash, Vicky Embry, Sallie Hall, Willy Fowler. Band’s music furnishes the big thrill. Fair, cold and windy weather dominated the scene on the “Big Day.” Preparations for the parade, the pre-game cere- monies, and the all-important Homecoming game electrified all of Quincy with excitement for days before Friday, Novem- ber 9. The hand with its bright uniforms and shining instru- ments set the key-note with their stirring marchin’ music. 90 Students Combine Work and Play Ann Wood, in her prize winning dress, and Steve Clark. Seniors Ann Wood and Charles Owens bring Mama Strong “smoke-free” ice from Chandlers. On November 25, 1962, Steve Clark and Ann Wood went to Chicago, with 29 other Florida 4-H’ers, to the 41st National 4-H Club Congress. Attending were delegates from all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Steve won his trip in his class of Electricity which was sponsored by Westinghouse. Ann’s trip was in her class of Dress Revue sponsored by Simplicity Pat- tern Co. While in Chicago Ann participated in the National 4-H Dress Revue. Very soon I began to think of all the things that were expected of me. I had to decide on my talent. There were many things to buy, such as a bathing suit and an evening dress. About a week before the contest we started practicing for the big night. It was so much fun the time flew by. Finally, the day arrived and I was scared to death. I had to get my hair fixed and make sure I had everything I needed. Then came the waiting. I think that was the longest day in my life. But before I knew what was happening, I was being named MISS CONGENIALITY. I was so happy I could have cried. In fact, I almost did. I think all the girls deserved my title. I’ll always treasure that day in my heart and thank everyone for giving me the chance to have it. 92 Cherish “Magic Moments” A Treasured Memory Honored at the thought of being a Tobacco Queen Contestant, I tried to represent my class in the best way possible. Looking back over that week I have to admit that every moment was filled with preparations, such as learning to model bathing suits and floor-length dresses, and developing a talent. I chose an original skit to show my interpretation of a growing tobacco leaf. My costume was designed to look like a cured tobacco leaf. Besides the general pressure of the contest on a whole, there was the answering of personality questions. But with all the work I wouldn’t trade that week for a million others. From it I gained many new and wonderful friends and the experience of being in a traditional beauty contest, which I will treasure the rest of my life. Contestants were judged on charm, poise, personality, bathing suit, evening gown, and talent. MISS CARLOTTA FAIRCLOTH 93 Fads and Customs Make Memories Rosa Nelson and Jimmy Taylor seem to have a lot to talk about. For most seniors there is a unique thrill in getting and wearing the senior ring. Sam Solomon, Susan West and Sue Anne Owens experi- ence that first joy of receiving their rings. 94 We Enjoy All Kinds of Entertainment MISS DONNA DICKENSON Energetic basketball fans “Twist and Shout after a game. MRS. HELEN SMITH. Through this surprise dedication we hope to communicate our thanks for a thousand things given to and done for us by her. With warm memories we look back on the laughs, decisions, and long hours of hard, sometimes tedious work that went into this book. For every hour we spent and every decision we made, she gave and made two. Now we hope to help double her joys—for we want her to keep that little-girl smile and innocence always. Therefore, with affection and love we offer THE 1963 TIGER as a token of our sincere appreciation for all she has done and all she has so unselfishly given. 164 THE TIGER 1963 story ends here. We hope that you have enjoyed Volume XVII and that you will cherish it for years to come. It is proudly but humbly presented to you by the Senior Annual Staff. 6 Editor-in-Chief SUSAN WEST Assistant Editor SUSANN WOODBERY Business Manager JOHN SHAW CURRY Advertising Managers suzie McMillan SUE ANNE OWENS Circulation Manager SUSAN SMITH Photography Managers SHERRY CHANDLER GEROGE PARRAMORE Art Editors WENDELL HIF.RS SUE LYNN MUNROE GEORGE RUDE Sports Editor SAM SOLOMON Student Life Editors REBEKAH CHAPMAN SARRAH SUE BARINEAU Copy Editor JUDY WOLF ALMA MATER On Florida’s western border, Beneath the clear, blue sky, Stands our noble Alma Mater.
