BUT ITS INTEREST IS NOT DENIED Mr. Duane Patrick MR. DUANE PATRICK: Chemistry, Biology, Science, Math; B.A., Cumberland University; M.A., Tennessee Polytechnic Institute. Honeycomb? Fancy design? No, it's simply an ordinary leaf under the microscope. Biology students make interesting studies of the fascinating life cycles of plants, animals, insects, and even human life. Students learn much about themselves and what makes them the way they are. Over the years biology students have contributed to the collection of specimens which are used for study and for dissecting. Suzanne Woodbery and Johnny Suber take their turn at the microscopes. Left to right: Jimmy Ashley, Nita Ford, Arwena Bell, and Douglas Milner (foreground). The knowledge of chemical sub- stances, their behavior, and the changes which they undergo is nof only bene- ficial now, but will be helpful in many situations in years to come. Serious minded chemistry students study the behavior of gases as one of the first steps toward understanding the be- havior of those ultimate particles of matter, atoms, and electrons. The knowl- edge of chemical behavior and reactions provides the basis for a better under- standing and appreciation of oneself and the world around. From the study of the gases the students progress into the more complicated study of the in- numerable compounds of carbon which are a part of all living matter. Approxi- mately one-fourth of the year in chem- istry is spent in laboratory work while the rest is spent in the lecture class where students participate in question and answer periods and discussion groups. Students maintaining a high chemistry average are allowed extra laboratory periods and perform many experiments. 13
