LOOKING AHEAD As this year celebrates the bicentennial of George Washington's birth, may the graduates of nineteen hundred and thirty-two be endowed with his un- ceasing adherence to truth, his sacred regard to public justice, his boundless faith in the future, his unswerving integrity, and his unselfish devo- tion to country. LANE Business Manager BOARD OF EDUCATION In promoting education, the Board of Education has promoted civic well-being and Quincy is indebted to them for their generous services. The greatest accomplishment of the Board and one of the chief interests of Mr. Steiner, aside from their regular duties has been in directing the construction of the new Senior High School which is rapidly nearing completion. This mammoth school building covers considerably more than a city block. The architecture is a modified Tudor Gothic. There are six stately entrances all trimmed with cut stone and terra cotta. The school is designed for two thousand pupils, but could accommodate three thousand and not be crowded. There are one hundred and eleven rooms for educa- tional uses, twenty-four for athletics, twelve for entertainment, four for refreshment, thirteen for administration and health, and forty-six for sanitary and storage uses. The new school plant is really three large buildings, all connected with con- venient corridors: the high school proper, the gymnasium, and the boiler house. The high school portion is rectangular in form with all classrooms receiving outside light. The large gymnasium is equipped with bleachers and apparatus storage. A mechanically operated folding partition divides the gymnasium into two complete sections, one for the boys and one for the girls. In the center of the high school proper is located the auditorium with its bowl- shaped floor and balcony. The stage at the West of the auditorium is large enough to accommodate all types of entertainments. All classrooms, shops, and laboratories are wholly above ground and all rooms have outside window lighting. This feature, plus synchronized program clocks, intercommunicating telephones, and radio connections make it an ultra-modern building. It is hoped to have the building completed and in use by the fall of 1933. of:-1:01034-1 1- 1 ix -3--asinn-,494'11-3--cumvxniip-11-1--14-3--1:-14,141in:V 1 iinxni.-:vin Eight ,-..g. 1-1--1 -if-14121-1-yi iuiwix-2 -1 1 vi vi vi -1:-in if ini-v1 -3 -10101 -..-....... -..,. 5 H A D Q W .,.,-- - -.....-.--.-.-.,-..E. ! l l l Q ! l Q ! l Q I l Q l I IN MEMORIAM Q i H. M I ss JESSIE BRAKENSIEK Q In the fall of 1929, the pioneer days of the Class of '32, a class ventured forth into l the unknown under the leadership of these class oflicers: President, Walter Sturhahng I Vice President, Pauline Albright, Secretary, Esther Whitefield, Treasurer, Bailey Ward. The class was capably guided by their sponsor, Miss Jessie D. Brakensiek. Among the enjoyable events of the first year was the annual sophomore party. Q During the school year of 1930-31, these ofiicers were elected: Margaretjo Cook, President, Walter Sturhahn, Vice President, Ferne Webel, Secretary, and Oliver Holt, Treasurer. The Junior play, The Whiteheaded Boy , directed by Miss Mildred Q Daugherty, merited its splendid success. At the junior-Senior reception the class Q humbly served the Seniors. Q At last they entered that year of school which once seemed so distant. The Senior play, Tons of Money , directed by Miss Daugherty, was a dramatic success. Q Football, basketball and track squads, coaches and members of the Board of Q Education were guests at the senior athletic banquet which was sponsored by the Q class. Q Soon the members of the class of '32 will fold their tents and though they Steal Q away on many trails, they will always remember their classmates and the kindness Q and splendid understanding of their teachers Who have helped to make their years Q of school life successful and happy. The officers: President, Malcolm Brodsky, Vice President, Maxwell Lepper, Secretary, jane Fiferg and Treasurer, Gene Burtle success- fully guided the class through its perilous first year. During the Junior year, the class of '33 has made a name for itself by skillfully staging the play Take My Advice . The junior-Senior Reception, always one of the major events of the year, was an especially colorful social affair. A very creditable record was made by the team. At the opening of the season Coach Kerr had to build up a team around four re- turning lettermen, develop a new quarterback and teach his men the Notre Dame style of play which was inaugurated this year. It was not an easy task but the season's record shows that Coach Kerr has again succeeded in putting a strong team on the field. The team was well balanced with a fairly heavy line flanked by a light, shifty backfield. The record they made was a good one. The Blue Devils won all of their home games but lost all of their games away from home. They encountered their toughest opposition on the road however. The Rock Island and Galesburg games were the hardest of the year. The men who won letters for their service on the football field were Captain James Hunter, Wilfred Balzer, Harlan Baumbach, Joe Bradford, Walter Brownlee, Oliver Holt, Jacob Holtschlag, Arthur Holstine, James Hook, Bob Hummert, Bill Keller, Eugene Radtke, Bill Rhineberg, Sam Schneidman, Dick Sullivan, Sam Waldfogel, Roy Wilcox, Dale Woodward and Paul Fraser, manager. The subs who worked With assistant Coach Taylor were Aalbers, Brodsky, Blaesing, Flachs, Finke, Francis, Ganz, Lawyer, Klinck, Razien, Roan and Slocum. STORBY, COACH O THE BASKETBALL SEASON, 1931-1932 Although the Blue Devils did not live up to the record of the 1930-1931 campaign, they made a fair showing on the hardwood courts in 1931-32. They were a much better team than the record indicates. The team won 8 out of 16 games during the season and lost their first game in the District Tournament. It was the first time since 1923 that Quincy High School has not won the tournament. Coach S. O. Storby prepared in advance for a tough season by calling in a large squad of newcomers early in the fall. From five returning lettermen and the pick of the newcomers the Coach built up a good team. The team lacked height but made up for this with speed and fight. Several of the new men on the squad showed ability and have given us hopes of a fine team next year. The Blue Devils played a hard schedule from start to finish, competing against some of the finest teams in this part of the state. The 13 to 12 victory over Hannibal and Keokuk's 26 to 25 win over Quincy were the two hardest and most exciting games on the home court this season. Keokuk again took first honors in the Mississippi Valley Conference race and Quincy finished in second place. The District Tournament was won by Payson this vear. The prospects for next season are very good and we hope that Coach Storby pro- duces another of his winning teams. MORGAN TAYLOR, com f 1 93 2 TRACK SEASON The 1932 track season can well be called one of the most successful track cam- paigns in the history of Quincy High School. This year Coach Taylor again had to build up a squad from a few lettermen but he was able to develop a large squad and as the season progressed many of the new men became consistent point winners. The first engagement of the season was the inter-class meet in which the juniors triumphed. The seniors finished second and the sophomores third. The Blue Devils went into foreign territory and finished second in a quadrangular meet with Keokuk, Hannibal and Canton. In the Springfield-Decatur triangular meet Quincy came out on top. Also, a dual meet with Mendon resulted in a clean sweep. The Blue Devils finished second in their dual meet with Keokuk. The Mississippi Valley Conference Meet and the District Meet were the remaining engagements on Quincy's schedule. During the season Coach Taylor developed some outstanding athletes who were consistent point winners. Among those were Harold Knapheide, Rolla Babcook, Bob Ganz and Bob Hummert. There were a number of sophomore track men who developed into consistent performers and we look to them for future success in track. Coach F. Morgan Taylor is to be congratulated and we hope he will continue to develop track teams of championship calibre. .5 Qugngngng. .1 gugug 1 iwg--x1,in14nv1n1u1 1 1 ni if-iw-1,1 -11-1 -1 1:11 ioimzs Seventy-two LEFT TO RIGHT. MORRISON, DIRECTOR O QUINCY HIGH SCHOOL BAND The band this year has followed a more strenuous course of activity than ever before in its history, playing over fifty public performances. A new feature this year was the monthly concerts played at Madison, Washing- ton, Irving and Dewey Schools. A concert was played in Jacksonville and the Annual Concert was given at the Empire Theater. The band took a trip to the State Fair at Springfield, played concerts at the Camp Point Chautauqua and at Soldier's Home meetings and for the dedication of the new hospital at Soldier's Home. The band won First Rating in both the District Contest at Jacksonville and the State Contest at Champaign and, although there is no National Contest this year, ours is one of the four bands from which two will be chosen to represent Illinois at the World's Fair in Chicago next year. The success of the band is greatly due to the hard work and capable direction of Mr. Morrison. 5. I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Cn 2 'Se N EI I I I I I I I !
