RYDERS Ryders was formerly called Opossum H111 This was the third or fourth public school 1n Quincy being preceded only by Mont Alto and Quincy and probably Tomstown The land was bought 1n 1837 while Quincy was still an integral part of Washington Township It is believed that Opossum Hill began its first term in November 1837 as a washington Township school and finished in March 1838 as a Quincy Township school. The name Opossum Hill must have been given the school because of the prevalence of opossums in that section. In 1893 a new school was built on a new site. This school was called Ryders from the name of the previous owner of the land on which the building was erected.
