Q O O n POIK HI LL The reason for an early school here, in a section which is now sparsely populated, was due to the rmmerous works at the Mont Alto iron estabhshnent at Mont Alto and Old Forge There have been two schools on this site The first one was built in 181414 just after James K Polk had been elected to the presidency of the United States for four years It must be concluded that Polk H111 was named for the newly elected President, although there are proponents of the idea that the school got its name from the abundance of poke berries which were supposed to have been much in evidence in that area Builder School Board Committee Cost Approximately S500 CO Directors Daniel Bonebrake, W G Smith, Abram Baker, James A Cook, William Hayman, Samuel Essick First teacher: 1876 George B Beatty Number of teachers since 1876 h7 Recent teachers Elizabeth I-Ioke, Bessie I-Ialdeman, Louann Barkdoll, Ethyl Oyler This school is closed at the present time. Date of Construction - 1876 ROCK HILL The land for the original building was purchased in 1856 There is no evidence that there was ever more than one building here There 18 a strong probability that thls building was constructed at Rock Hill sometime between 1893 and 1903 as records for those years are missing, and the present building does not seem to have had ninety years of Date of Construction Between 18911 and 1902 Builder, cost, and directors Unknown First teachers 1876 A H Deardorff Number of teachers since 1876 SO Recent teachers: Katherine Smith, Marjorie Tolbert, Mary G Osborne Present teacher Miss Alice Fulton, grades 3 and lg 142 students students and teachers. RYDERS Ryders was formerly called Opossum H111 This was the third or fourth public school 1n Quincy being preceded only by Mont Alto and Quincy and probably Tomstown The land was bought 1n 1837 while Quincy was still an integral part of Washington Township It is believed that Opossum Hill began its first term in November 1837 as a washington Township school and finished in March 1838 as a Quincy Township school. The name Opossum Hill must have been given the school because of the prevalence of opossums in that section. In 1893 a new school was built on a new site. This school was called Ryders from the name of the previous owner of the land on which the building was erected.
