NOTES FROM A GOLDEN AGE Once upon a time humanity thought that Troy was a mythical city, a fabled fortress. In Greek legend it was the battleground for such great heroes as Agememnon, Odysses, Paris, and Achilles, the locale for stories about beauteous Helen of Troy and Aphrodite. Now we know this mythology was not all myth. Archeologists have found that Troy did exist. Troy was an eastern rampart of the great Grecian city states that ringed the Aegean Sea during man's first great Age of Reason. This Panhellenic League spawned the Classic Era of Greek civilization—one of mankind's noblest times. And Troy was a crossroads of this culture between the Near East and Western civilization. So it is with our Troy, City of Trojans, QHS. Your high school is your crossroads of culture, a scene of many academic victories and some defeats, a fortress of knowledge. It may provide your laurel wreath or your Achilles heal, but herein we, the PINE archivists and archeologists, publish the realities, memories, and myths of that fabled, fabulous era, 1969-70 A.D. mi ibnilgiifeTlfefL-gTi T iEn I lITROY 1969-7011 1- 1 1 1 1 1 1 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS Student Life..... 5 Organizations............. 10 Sports 36 Activities Faculty Seniors Classes 54 62 68 92 Administration 109 STUDENT LIFE STUDENT LIFE Student Life? Grecians had a word for liveliness of spirit or joy of life, Hubros. This is the spirit of Zorba the Greek. Homer took two huge volumes, The Illiad and the Oydessey to describe the Greek code of life. We pitched in and worked considerably on many knotty problems; so, as you ponderosa many times over this annual (the hysteria, highlights, and history of QHS 1970), we hope that we've spruced it all up to your satisfaction. And before logging out, we wish to thank our patrons, Mr. Stoy, our faculty friends who aided and forgave and assisted, and ’many volunteer helpers such as Susan McElroy and Elaine Brock and many others. Who but the Greeks first organized major sports meets. Team athletes and individual sports heroes such as wrestlers and runners were honored citizens because they symbolized the virtues of valor, skill, discipline stamina, and dedication—traits that made Athenians, Spartans, Trojans strong people and proud citizens. Troy's football fortunes this fall went from fair to faltering in the FRL as Greenville, Portola, and Herlong all fielded strong teams. Herlong was rated the league's pre-season favorite and one of the top Northern California squads. Quincy played one of its best games against the Vikings. Portola proved to be the class of the conference; its powerhouse rolled over all contenders and stomped Greenville in the last game of the season for the Feather River title. The 1969 Trojans lost some squeakers this year. They played many a rough game and turned in some strong team and individual efforts. TROY'S TRIGCERMAN WE LOSE TALLS, SEASON STALLS The Hoop game got off to a fast break and then some fracturous breaks this season. In the opener against Burney our Q.H.S. Quintet won on a timely basket by Gary Stallions. Next week 6'5 Stallions isn't reaching for new vertical heights like dunking baskets. He's horizontal. Shortly afterward, Stan Carr is crippled. And the season sputtered. The basketeers kept a high morale despite their squad losses and played every game right to the final buzzer. Outstanding on offense and defense were Jay Donnelly and Cliff Thornburg. Cliff also set a new school scoring record. After his early season's injury, Stan Carr showed rapid improvement, as did most of the young squad. Cliff Thornburg VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM MANAGERS: G. Wolters, T. Lash, M. Blust. ADMINISTRATION We have a Pantheon and a Parthenon, so we must needs have us a Pentagon or headquarters for the systems of government. And when a school system is good and runs smoothly, then the humanistic philosophy becomes reality. The Classic Greeks were humane and efficient with their systems. Their citizenry believed in being part of government, and they honored their statesmen, leaders, and orators. We hope our Pentagon keeps working that way. ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL: Mr. Vincent Burns IS SHE LAUGHING? VICE-PRINCIPAL: Mr. Don Penland. r v 110 Troy was once besieged for ten years. Administrations are besieged eternally, at least in the sense that each school day means new situations to be dealt with—a myriad of planning, details, diplomacy, and doing. A school's administration and staff must make the whole system function towaid one philosophy and purpose, that of schooling. Grecians believed that learning was of the utmost importance. Even that word philosophy is Greek, meanig the love of wisdom. So the philosophy of the school and the practical day-to-day business of functioning comes from its administration. From its cleanly custodians to its caloric cafeteria to compatable counseling to cheerful attendance clerks to its competent capital (and to even an occasional courteous chastising), we'll remerabei Troy's administrative harmony and humanity. mm OFFICE ASSISTANTS Mrs. Scarlett FRONT ROW: Left to Right: N.
