THE PINE VOLUME XXXI Published Annually by the Students of QUINCY JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Quincy, California 1955 DEDICATION In appreciation for his many unselfish deeds and helpful advice he has given us, we, the Class of 1955, dedicate this thirty-first edition of the FINE to Mr. Don Penland. IN MEMORIAM With Deep sorrow we mourn the death of Melton Hobbs, a Quincy High School Freshman, on October 22, 1954. A typical freshman boy, he was liked and respected by all, and his death leaves a vacant space which cannot be filled. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE MR. RAYMOND J. SIMPSON Principal Congratulations, Seniors of 1955. You have successfully completed one important share of your education and are about to begin another. Although we are sometimes inclined to think of education as happeningonlyintheclassroom, weshould remember that we will continue to learn wherever the future finds us, in college, the armed services, or in the very realistic business of earning a living and of maintaining a home. In a very real sense you may consider your education as just beginning, for a large measure of your future success may depend upon the amount and kind of learning you gain from this point forward. If your high school experience has brought about a desire to learn more, we have succeeded in one of our basic objectives. As a class and as individuals you have contributed to the development of welfare of the school and the community. Quincy will always reflect the influences of your stay here, and you may be assured that the good you leave here will equal the good you take with you. We of the faculty have enjoyed working with you and extend to each of you our sincere wishes for a happy and successful future. May your memories of Quincy High be as pleasurable as our own. ° Raymond J. Simpson STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Progress is what has made our county what it is today. Progress in Plumas County has been tremendous, not only in modern facilities and improvements of roads, but also in the schools. Progress has been the theme of your student government this year. The Student Council has broadened the Homecoming events and has also adop -ted many new policies in an effort to promote a closer relationship between the students and their government. JOHNNY CLARK Student Body President We would like to thank the students for contributing new ideas to the Council and for their cooperation in executing the new policies adopted by the Student Council. I would like to give my personal thanks to the students and faculty for the cooperation they have shown me and for the opportunity of representing Quincy High School this past year. I shall always remember and cherish the honor of serving as student body president of Quincy High School. Johnny Clark FOREWORD We, the staff of the 1955 Pine, wish to express our hopes that we have been successful in bringing to you an annual which truly represents you, the students of Qiincy High School. We are fortunate this year in being able to add two more pages to our book, which shows that we are growing. And just as you have witnessed the growth of your school, so you have, unconsciously perhaps, witnessed your own growth. You have experienced days that you will never know again. For some, it is the closing of the last text book; for others, barely an opening; for all, the completion of a time of your life you will never want to forget. Tomorrow you will glance through your PINE and remember these many happy days. We express sincere appreciation to the many people who put out much time and effort in the making of the annual: to Miss Mendosa, Annual Advisor; Mr. Aaserude, Photography teacher; Sandra Gordon, Photography Manager; and the Photography Staff. We also thank the teachers for their patience during our interruptions of their classes. Without this help, our book would not be possible. OFFICERS — ---------------------------President — — - - — -------- - Vice President ---------------------------- Secretary -------------------Council Representative CLASS HISTORY The Junior Class spent most of the year a feudin with the seniors. (Of course, the juniors usually won.) The float for Homecoming was quite nice, entitled The Champ. It was a scene with a Trojan standing between two pillars and with two injured Indians lying on the ground. The queen candidate was Anne Johns. There were many outstanding boys out for sports. In football some of the outstanding juniors were Gordon Thompson, Burce Kurtz, Jerry Howe, Willie McKnight, Kenneth Hobbs, Dan Wilson, Ray Kenny, Duane Stites, Eddie Myers, Connie Mason, David Beall, Wilbert Berry, and John Lee. Many other boys went out for basketball, track, and baseball. Many other juniors were active in school activities and clubs. Only one junior, Lynn Engdahl, was on the C.S. F. Todd Petty and Gene Davis had the honor of serving as student body vice president and secretary, respectively. Two yell leaders and two song leaders were from the Junior Class. The yell leaders were Leone Hard and Lena Wertz, and the song leaders were Dixie Fross and Virginia Huntington. The Junior Prom was held on March 26. There was a big crowd present; it seemed a success. The juniors look forward to an active senior year. JERRY HOWE - -LYNN ENGDAHL SUSIE HOWELL -ALICE COCHRAN First row, left to right: B. Egbert; R. They were well represented in all of the different organizations. There were several in the C.S.F., and the bigger pan of the Pine Breeze staff was made up of sophomores. The ones on the staff were Peg Lowrey, Barbara Young, Patsy Foley, Susan Youngs, Yvonne Beale, and Anna Coleman. A lot of the Sophswere in the Drama Club, the Pep Club, G. A. A., and Block Q. There were a lot of boys out for all of the sports. The Sophomore float took first place at Homecoming. It was really a very nice one. The theme was fortune teller’s booth and a swami predicting the future which was to be the winning of the Homecoming game. The swami was Charles Hasty, who was looking into a silver football. It was written in the stars that Quincy was to win. The Queen candidate was Geraldine Wilson, who served as attendant to the queen. The Sophomore Hop was quite a success. The coming years are certain to be successful ones for the Class of 1957. First row, left to right: R. Wallace; R. Brown; D. Pettigrew; B. Prindle; J. Rabedew; D. James; R. Cooper; M. Hobbs; D. For Homecoming they had a very nice float, the theme of which was Bury The Indians. Their queen candidate was Carroll Kennedy, who served as attendant of the Queen. The freshman relay team won the race at the bonfire and so were able to have the honor of lighting the bonfire. Many of the boys went out for sports this year. Most of the Junior Varsity football team was freshmen. They also had a good turnout for basketball, track, and baseball. Many girls participated in G. A. A. activities this year, and freshmen also took an active part in various other organizations, such as the drama club and pep club. They had two dances this year with a very good turnout at both of them. To end the year, they had a class picnic which was enjoyed by all who attended it. Bob Edwards picked up a fumble by fullback Eddie Myers and ran for 15 yards before losing his game pants with the help of a Corning player. The Trojans looked good in their first league win against Herlong, but the first upset of the season came when Portola defeated Quincy 14-12. The Trojans were then underestimated and came back to beat down the Westwood Lumberjacks, who were rated the favorites. The Trojans were also underdogs in the Lassen-Quincy game but proved their championship ability by defeating the Grizzlies in a wide-open game. The biggest game of the season was the Trojan's Homecoming game with Greenville. The game was scoreless until the third quarter when A1 Lewis bucked over the first T.D. The outstanding play of the game was Jerry Howe's catching a would-be pass fumble and running 45 yards for a T. D. Big John Wininger, left tackle for the Trojans, let it be known that his secret desire was to be a fullback when he ran 35 yards up the middle for a T. D. on the first play in the fourth quarter. The Trojans ended up co-champions with Westwood this year, and are still recognized ________as champions of the Feather River League.__________________________________________ SENIOR STARS JOHN CLARK, Right End Co-Captain JIM MAULT, Tackle ALFRED LEWIS, Fullback Co-Captain CLARENCE WILSON, Guard BOB EDWARDS, Guard GENE CLARK, Senior Manager JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL Seated, left to right: R. At the start of the season the J.V. s appeared to be on their way to winning several games. They won only two out of six; however, next year should see them on their way to a league championship. In the second league game the J.V. 's defeated Herlong and were on their way to a good season when they came up against Portala and were stopped cold. For the next two games they suffered defeats, and when it looked hopeless, they came through by banging down Shasta J.V. s 26-7, with the assistance of the second string varsity. The J.V. 's were developing and working together quite well in that game. Rod Turner, the quarterback, began to click on his passes, and Pete Hanley was look-in very good on defense.
