1950 Pint PROGRESS; ISSJJE JAMES KEOLKER Editor Published Annually by the STUDENTS OF QUINCY JR.-SR. HIGH SCHOOL Quincy, California Vol. XXVI DfDICHTIOn « We, the Pine Staff of 1950, hereby dedicate this annual to Progress. We remember the stately pines and rolling lawns of the past. We think of the present filled with interruptions of pile drivers and dynamiting. Now we look forward to the future of a beautiful school and campus gracing our community. We look to the future with pride. Then, here’s to Progress; and may it never cease. 2 3 MR. L.V. AASERUDE Science, Mathematics, English, Sociology; A.B. This year marked the third major improvement on our school since it was erected in 1913. This first improvement occurred in 1929, when an increased enrollment made it necessary for the addition of a gym. In 1939 the Music Room and Shop were opened. Now in 1950 we are seeing the beginning of a large building plan unfold before our eyes. This year the project has been directed toward a badly needed gymnasium and a six class room unit. Each year it has been possible for us to see an increase in the enrollment; now it is possible for us to say that our buildings are increasing with the students! SENIORS BARRY, HAZEL Q.H.S. The males, however, wore their annual fall “Butch” or “C rew haircuts. Winter encouraged such things as Dress-up sprees and safety pin chains. The Yule season brought “T” shirt, necktie, and suspender fads for the boys, and for the girls, colored hair of purple and red and green dyes. Mule Train and Frankie Laine clubs were the Pride of the Republic. And the New Year brought a Twirp Season no one will ever be able to forget! Spring brought its usual array of light clothes and bright colors, although heavy corduroys and tweeds had been the year’s specialty. And now another school year of goofy fads and changing fashions has come to a close, having sometimes provided a focal point too large to escape community comments and criticism. Nevertheless it has been a swell year, full of fun and gaiety for Mr. and Miss Teen-ager! 22 FIRST ROW: N. Finley, A. Fisher, B. Whipple, P. Davis, L. Shoote, P. Fain, G. Barnes, S. Coleman, K. THE Plflf STflff We, the annual staff of this year’s Pine, sincerely wish that our combined efforts have proved fruitful in producing an annual of which you may be proud and which you will treasure. If this goal has been attained, then we shall know that our efforts have not been given in vain. We have planned this publication with only you, the student, in mind. We have tried to please as many of the organizations, departments, and classes as was possible. We acknowledge the fact that there may be mistakes among these pages; but we hope that you will pardon them and accept the fact that this is your annual, your school year of 1949-50 in review. You made it what it was. And always we will remember its fun and its fallacies, all part of your life in this building, this community, and in this your school. 24 pint BflffZfS FIRST ROW; A. The Pine Breezes’ activities were limited this year to printing the county’s best bi-weekly newspaper, and holding its annual dance on February 3, 1950. The dance, one of the best of the school year, featured a return visit of the flapper era of the 1920’s. The highlight of the evening was a public appearance of Jean Harlowe (Betty Myers) and Clara Bow (Nancy Stapely). All in all, the staff was kept stepping by the busy activities of the year. 25 STUDfllT BODy PRESIDENT'S NIESSRGE Most of us think that school is just to fill our minds with academic material. But actually, there are a couple of factors involved along with the reading, writing, and arithmetic which, I believe, are just as important as if not more so when you think of the chaotic situation in the world today. We are learning to cooperate, not just cooperation in school, but carrying it out and applying it in everyday life. What the world needs today is true cooperation, to do the best for the most, putting aside our individual desires. Responsibility is another big item, doing your wo k, not just school work, but any job that is to be done. One should getit done on time, doing the best jobpossibie. The prerequisite for a harmonious and peaceful life is for everyone to take his share of responsibilities and to do them well while cooperating with all those concerned. By practicing these important ideals here at our school, we shall be able to go out to adulthood and make an enjoyable life for ourselves and influence others also. By doing this we can make our country stronger and do our part to advance world peace by cooperation. STUDENT councn FIRST ROW: S. Coleman, M. Young, N. Stapley, J. Delano, L. Shoote, M. Pruitt, A. The local chapter of the California Scholarship Federation is one of the most active groups in Quincy High School, carrying as its goal, high standards in scholastic achievement. The organization held its usual energetic activities. But this year these included a most hilarious dance; ahandbookfor new students, which explains customs, cheers, and standards of our school; and the helping in the semester “pep campaign.
