MESSAGE STUDENT BODY Dean Dixon, President Student Body Quincy High School OF PRESIDENT The question that often comes to the mind of a graduate is “What shall I do now?” When one graduates from high school he has a feeling of insecurity, as this marks a turning point in his life. The previous twelve years we have had our tasks laid out for us, and we could always turn to our instructors for advice and aid. But now we are all of us more or less at a moment of decision in our lives. Most of us from our Freshman year have looked forward with great eagerness to this day of graduation. Now that the day has arrived I think that the majority feel reluctant to leave. Graduates are divided into two classes: those who will have the opportunity to go on to college and those who are unable to do so. At the present time competition for jobs is very keen, and it is absolutely essential for one to go to college to prepare oneself for this competition. Those who for some reason or another cannot go on to college will have a hard job before them; but I fully believe thatthere is notone person in this graduation class who cannot cope with the situation. In high school our teachers did their best to train us to meet the responsibilities which lie before us after our high school course. They have tried to teach us good citizenship and to equip us with the knowledge necessary to meet the problems we shall encounter later on. It was harder for some students than for others to absorb this knowledge, but I feel assured that we have acquired sufficient background in this high school to prepare us. Now it is our duty to use our training to the best of our ability and see what we can make of ourselves in the years to come. 6 ,tning sVcetbaU BASHAW, IRA LAWRENCE Transferred from Rio Vista. Important announcement! MR. DEAN DIXON, President of Pines and Needles Company, has just reported his lunch stolen. The thieves are believed to be members of his high school class of 1949. MR. DIXON says the Physics Class always was hungry, but he didn’t believe they would be hungry after ten years. The D.A., GENE PARKER, and Chief of Police, BOB GRAVERT, say they’ll not leave a stone unturned till they find the capsule lunch. Jumping in their jet plane the D.A., PARKER, and Chief of Police, GRAVERT, left for Africa to interview and question Reporter and Photographer ROSS HUTCHINSON. They couldn’t find him, however; it seems he got lost in a part of Africa called the “Dark Room.” Detectives, JOAN LEE and SHIRLEY DAKIN, have interviewed Governor DICK BIGBY of California (a member of the 1949 class) who says, Friends, Countrymen, and Californians, somebody must have been hungry. Crime Doctor BOB YOUNG believes the motive for theft was encyphalo-myeleus. His nurse, BEVERLY HERMAN, agrees with his diagnosis. Both are members of the 1949 class. MR. and MRS. CHARLES AUSMUS(nee MARILEE EDSON) have been released from suspicion because they own a restaurant. MARILEE sings for entertainment--“Prices for capsule dinners are reasonable.” We interrupt this program to bring you a new clue on the Capsule Case. JERRY NUGENT, all-round cowboy of 1959, has just turned cannibal and eaten his horse. Senator MARILYN COTTER has just been called in for questioning. It looks serious because she is negotiating with President BATHA on a bill for more food for her district in Plumas County. Witnesses Morticians GENE DUPONT and HAROLD “Peanuts MASON have been called in to testify on the Grand Jury. Electrician Bill Moore has also been called in. He will without a doubt be the only live wire there. The technical side of the Capsule Case is being considered by Mathematician REX BEARD. According to his calculations the answer is -2: Minus two capsules for lunch. Inspector RAY HUNTINGTON, after many board meetings, has finally managed to locate LARRY BASHAW. He was not recognized because he had shaved. Lawyer for defense, RAY DREYER, had to postphone the Grand Jury hearing because he is suffering from malnutrition. The Salvation Army has lost two of its best social workers, JO ANN SHARON and WILLO SAPP. They couldn’t get enough to eat. This concludes our broadcast for today. This is LOUIS BROWN, reporter on food affairs, signing off. MOST POPULAR Marilyn Cotter and Dean Dixon BEST ATHLETES Jo Ann Sharon and Louis Brown THE FORTY-NIIIIERS HALL OF FAME MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Joan Lee and Gene Parker (Next day on broadcast.) The Ford Motor Company has shut down the factory because MEL GAR-VIS, Vice-President, cannot be found. His secretary, DORIS HEDGES, says she thinks he got a call for the tow truck. Honorable Judge IAN MC ELROY has been taken to the hospital for treatment. It is rumored that the judge is suffering from rickets. JOY SANDERS, his nurse, says he is the worst patient she has ever had. Our reporter, BOB STRIEGEL, has just infromed us that NELL BEDELL, the long lost hermit, has been found. Having developed a phobia for meat and people, she has turned vegetarian. BILLIE CHAMBERLAIN, our sponsor, wishes to ask you listeners if you have any information on the Capsule Case. A $ 110,000 reward will be given for any clues by the Rainbow Pills Company. Do you see spots before your eyes? If you do, take Rainbow Pills and see them in technicolor. One by one the class of 1949 has been giving themselves up. NORMA CARLSON has just arrived from China. She is still looking for a man. If worst comes to worst NORMA will take the accused for a man. The F.B.I. Agent, BOB DELLINGER, has just been called in to solve the Capsule Case. BOB has justfinished solving the case of the Missing Women. He found them where he had put them. Ghandi of Death Valley (alias BILL BLACKMAN) has gone on a hunger strike and refuses to eat until the Capsules are found. Junior-junior-junior Manager of the Town Hall Theater, ANN BISHOP, has just been accused of stealing the Capsule Lunch. Her motive: The Town Hall ran out of pop-corn. Teacher of Home Economics, SHIRLEY DODSON, says only one type of person could eat a Capsule Lunch—the starving type. Preacher ZOMBIE WRIGHT has given the authorities another clue. “Undoubtedly it was someone seeking revenge, for revenge hath an empty stomach. HELEN LOCKHART, President of the Ladies Cooking Society, has also been excluded from suspicion because she eats nothing but homemade foods. This case is becoming so involved that housewife, NANCY CHANEY, had to leave her two red-headed boys to help clear up the matter. PHYLLIS GARFIELD, author of “Ask Me Anything and I Can Tell You, has nothing to say on the Capsule Case. Flash! The guilty men have just been apprehended. ALLEN WARREN, MAL HARTWIG, and GEORGE MORSE, who refused to graduate with the class of '49, influenced their graduating class of 1950 to steal the Capsule Lunch as revenge on the class of '49. 16 CUSS WILLS Charles Ausmus - will my ability to play basketball to Dick Madeira. The team ended the season with 357 points to their credit and only 36 points scored against them. According to official figures the Quincy High SAool six-man football team was the highest scoring team of its kind in the United States last year. They made an average of 51 points per game. At a general assembly Mr. Sowers presented goldfootballs to eleven of the players. With the experience gained this year the team expects to do very well in eleven man football competition next year. 1948 SCHEDULE Quincy 28 0 Portola Quincy 64 0 Greenville Quincy 58 8 Westwood Quincy 56 0 Loyalton Quincy 36 14 Portola Quincy 58 0 Susanville Quincy 57 14 Westwood FRONT ROW: R. SEASON: 1948-49 The severe winter of ‘49 will be remembered for the dangerous road conditions which required cancellation of many Trojan activities. The Plumas-Sierra Basketball League games were hardest hit, and as the Pine goes to press the schedule is still incomplete. With half of the ‘48 lettermen back, The Trojan “A’s” had a good team. After dropping the season's first game to Portola, they won the return encounter and then beat Loyalton. The Greenville Indians nosed them out by one point. The League’s “A” teams were so evenly matched that it was anybody's championship up to the final week of the season. The Trojan B” squad has gone through the season undefeated and seems well on its way toward the league title. Both the “A and “B teams showed immense improvement under the excellent supervision of Coach Tharp and Coach Timone, and gave the fans a very exciting season. B TEAM FIRST ROW: B. Wright, M. They were upended, however, by Greenville victors in their half, in a tight game for the Legue Championship. C TEAM FIRST ROW: F. Howe, N. Ausmus, W. Stubblefield, C. Although they remained undefeated, the “D’s were given a couple of near-fatal scares by Portola, but managed to eke out a couple of two-point wins over the Cubs. The “D’s journeyed to Susanville and easily lifted the League crown, that Susanville had won the year before. Great honor was givento Marilyn Cotter andErnestine Broyles when they were elected to attend the North Western Pacific Music Conference at Sacramento during Easter vacation to represent the Band and Chorus. The band’s main event of the year was their band concert on March 30, 1949. Solists were Joy Delano on the trombone and Bob Young on trumpet. The band had the pleasure of making two out of town trips. One was their annual trip to the Marysville Music Festival and the other one was to the San Jose Music Festival. This was the first time the bandhas ever gone to a festival that far from home and to a festival of that kind. The County Music Festival was held at Portola. The orchestra really provided wonderful music for our Christmas program. It also added greatly to the success of the C. S. F. dance by playing an hour of smooth music for dancing. The orchestra also played for the March of Dimes program and accepted dance jobs at various other schools. In the repertory are all of the new numbers and also a number of the old standard tunes. The play was a mystery-comedy that kept the audience on edge the entire evening with a series of murders, dried human heads, a wild gorilla, and even burglars. Certainly a lot of credit should be given to the cast for their wonderful performance in making the play a sensational hit. CAST Joy Delano.......................... This dance “The Paper Frolic,” was held in the Band Room on March 5 and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The staff should be given praise for doing such fine work on one of the County High School’s leading newspapers. 51 At The Paper Frolic SENIOR HIGH PIP RALLY COMMITTEE FIRST ROW: Louis Brown, Joan Lee, Malcolm Hartwig. SECOND ROW: Marilyn Cotter, Shirley Dakin, Norma Carlson, Lloyd Jones, Meredith Pruitt. THIRD ROW: Douglas Stowell, Dick Bigby, Dean Dixon, Gene Parker, Jim Keolker. At the beginning of the school year “ole man school spirit” was at his lowest ebb. The pep rally committee, together with Mr. Timone, had charge of all our rallies. They should be given a lot of credit for boosting the school spirit one hundred per cent. Joan Lee, President, had each class and organization give a skit for the rallies in order to getthe school behind the teams. One outstanding skit, presented by the junior class, was the revival of the dead school spirit, brought back to life, by school songs and cheers led by our cheerleaders, Shirley Dakin and Norma Carlson. The seniors, which organized songs and yells of their own, created quite an effect when the led the whole student body out of the bleachers and formed a conga line on the gym floor. 52 ;.
