HISTORY Although Quincy was incorporated as a village in 1858, the first school was opened many years earlier in the summer of 1836 in the log cabin home of Mrs. Hannah Newberry. In 1837. the school was located in a one- room log house owned by John Broughton and located where the American Legion post is presently situated. The log schoolhouse was torn down and a frame structure erected in its place between 1841 and 1842. By 1844 enrollment increased so much that all pupils could not be accommodated: therefore, a private school was organized. In 1850 the schoolhouse was moved to the present site of the Methodist Church on West Chicago Street. When the Methodist Church obtained this land, the school was to be moved to Jefferson Street, but this was no easy task since it could not be decided whether the school should be located east or west of Main Street. A contest was set up to decide the question. The people on the west side of Main Street hitched their oxen to the west side of the building while those from the east side did the same thing with the east side of the build- ing. The spectators then watched to see the teams of oxen pull and the building moved slightly to the east, thus deciding the question. In 1 856 the district decided to build another structure and in 1858 the first brick building was completed on the corners of East Jefferson and Fulton Streets, the site of the present middle school building. The old frame building was sold to be used as a store and was moved away. It also served as a home on Bond Street before it was moved to village land on the south side of Quincy where it is to be restored as a school building museum. The school facility once again became inadequate in 1903 so the part that had stood since 1858 was torn down and. in 1904. was replaced by a large addition which cost $10.000. In 1930 a new building was again voted due to increasing enrollments. The old brick building was demol- ished and the building, which presently houses the middle school, was built in 1932. Between 1946 and 1956, 22 schools were consolidated with Quincy. In 1954-55. the building was remod- eled and an addition for high school vocational classes was built on the south side. Land was also purchased at the end of Fulton Street for a new elementary building which was completed in 1955 and dedicated as the Edward Jennings Elementary School. In 1960 the decision was made to construct a million dollar building for use as a high school. The building was dedicated on February 4, 1962. The elementary school also received a six-room addition. The most ''ecent construction was in 1968 when an addition was added to the elementary school and a new athletic field complex was built. In 1874 a class of two boys and three girls was the first to complete the prescribed course of study. In observance of this, a program of orations and essays was given by these five students. The first official commencement was held in 1876 when three boys were awarded certificates to show their achievement. The Class of 1980 is the centennial class because no classes graduated in 1877, 1878, 1879. 1881 and 1890. The Class of 1910 issued the first yearbook, while the custom of passing the cane from the senior class to the junior class originated in 1897. The cane represents the bond of friendship and good will existing between the classes and symbolizes the new life of the graduates. The Quincy School System has had continuing accreditation by the University of Michigan since 1916 Accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools began in 1937. exactly 100 years after the first schoolhouse was built, and continues through the present. 17
