1980 ORIOLE QUINCY HIGH SCHOOL QUINCY, MICHIGAN OUR 100th YEAR 7 10 11 14 15 HISTORY Although Quincy was incorporated as a village in 1858, the first school was opened many years earlier in the summer of 1836 in the log cabin home of Mrs. Hannah Newberry. In 1837. the school was located in a one- room log house owned by John Broughton and located where the American Legion post is presently situated. The log schoolhouse was torn down and a frame structure erected in its place between 1841 and 1842. By 1844 enrollment increased so much that all pupils could not be accommodated: therefore, a private school was organized. In 1850 the schoolhouse was moved to the present site of the Methodist Church on West Chicago Street. When the Methodist Church obtained this land, the school was to be moved to Jefferson Street, but this was no easy task since it could not be decided whether the school should be located east or west of Main Street. A contest was set up to decide the question. The people on the west side of Main Street hitched their oxen to the west side of the building while those from the east side did the same thing with the east side of the build- ing. The spectators then watched to see the teams of oxen pull and the building moved slightly to the east, thus deciding the question. In 1 856 the district decided to build another structure and in 1858 the first brick building was completed on the corners of East Jefferson and Fulton Streets, the site of the present middle school building. The old frame building was sold to be used as a store and was moved away. It also served as a home on Bond Street before it was moved to village land on the south side of Quincy where it is to be restored as a school building museum. The school facility once again became inadequate in 1903 so the part that had stood since 1858 was torn down and. in 1904. was replaced by a large addition which cost $10.000. In 1930 a new building was again voted due to increasing enrollments. The old brick building was demol- ished and the building, which presently houses the middle school, was built in 1932. Between 1946 and 1956, 22 schools were consolidated with Quincy. In 1954-55. the building was remod- eled and an addition for high school vocational classes was built on the south side. Land was also purchased at the end of Fulton Street for a new elementary building which was completed in 1955 and dedicated as the Edward Jennings Elementary School. In 1960 the decision was made to construct a million dollar building for use as a high school. The building was dedicated on February 4, 1962. The elementary school also received a six-room addition. The most ''ecent construction was in 1968 when an addition was added to the elementary school and a new athletic field complex was built. In 1874 a class of two boys and three girls was the first to complete the prescribed course of study. In observance of this, a program of orations and essays was given by these five students. The first official commencement was held in 1876 when three boys were awarded certificates to show their achievement. The Class of 1980 is the centennial class because no classes graduated in 1877, 1878, 1879. 1881 and 1890. The Class of 1910 issued the first yearbook, while the custom of passing the cane from the senior class to the junior class originated in 1897. The cane represents the bond of friendship and good will existing between the classes and symbolizes the new life of the graduates. The Quincy School System has had continuing accreditation by the University of Michigan since 1916 Accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools began in 1937. exactly 100 years after the first schoolhouse was built, and continues through the present. 17 18 61 auoaj SUPER SENIORS OF 1980 Anna-Kaisa Ala-Ketola Carl W. Although our Birds’ record was not a winning one. Quincy seemed to have a better season than what was indicated, Quincy lost three games by a total of nine points, two of which were one point losses. Quincy finished in a tie for third place in the Big 8 Conference with Homer with a record of 4-3. Quincy gave their fans plenty to cheer about and the fans rewarded the team by giving them sup- port throughout the entire season. Following the season, Quincy placed six people on the first team all conference squad. These people were Brian Ludlow, running back; Phil Cutler, tight end; Kamal Cariuty, kicker; Bill Smith, offensive tackle; Tim Brewer, defensive lineman; and John Burge, linebacker. Keith Teachout earned a spot on the second team as a defensive end. Mark Ludlow earned a berth on the honor squad by receiving honorable mention as a defensive back. Five of these players were also placed on the all area team: Ludlow, Cutler, Smith, Brewer and Burge. Cariuty was the only Oriole gridder that earned all state honors earning a spot on the honorable mention squad. 122 The Team: front: Manager Matt Smith, Jeremy Martin, Jeff Wood, Bryan Harmon, Pat Falzon, Kevin VanVIeet, Shannon Rice, Tony Cariuty; middle: Mark Ludlow, John Burge, Richard Sattler, Tim Brewer, Brian Ludlow, Robert Hard, Tyler Baldwin, Jack Faulkner, Curtis Keeton; back: Coach Lonney Evon, Ken Newberry, Jerry Shobe, Alec Legg, Phil Cutler, Bill Smith, Keith Teachout. This was good enough for third place in the Big 6 standings. The young Orioles were led offensively by freshman back Jim Supianoski. The defense was anchored by sophomore linebacker Brent Whit- ney. The junior Birds started the season on a win- ning note by shutting out arch rival Bronson. They continued to roll, recording three more shutouts throughout the season. The Team: front: Rick Booher, Steve Stempien, Ron Lange, Scott Wilkinson, Dave Williams, Jeff Ellis, Scott Brand, Brett Cutler, Ken Holloway, Wally Schultz; middle: Tom Loveberry, Brent Whitney, Jim Supianoski, Todd Smith, Brent Parkinson, Art Kahaian, Andy Richards, Rowdy Gibson, Chuck Miller, Joe Harmon, Steve Hinds, Wes Horney; back: Coach Rick Moore, Kevin Kaiser, Doug Russell, Steve Clark, Ed Buell, Brad Rurka, Scott Peterson, Eric Rice, Bryan Wymer, Jay Millard, Calvin Shilling, Andy Snyder, Brad Freeburn, Head Coach Chuck Cook and Coach Jack Adams. The Oriole duffers posted a dual match record of 7-7. Jim Keeslar was voted outstanding golfer by his teammates. Most improved golfer on the team was Darin Friend. Honors went to sophomore Todd Schmidt who finished third on the all conference team. The Team: front: Todd Schmidt, Rob Smith, Erin Sawdey, Kurt Spalding, Todd Strane; back: Coach Bob Mitc- hell, Chuck Rubley, Mike Vozar, Darin Friend, Tori Budd, Bill Swallow and Jim Kesslar. 126 127 The Oriole Cross Country team had a trying season by compiling a 2-3 record in regular season meets. They placed fourth in the conference meet. State meet qualifiers included Rich Bean and Greg Miller. Hard work paid off for these two Orioles who palced fifth and twenty-first respectively. The Team: front: Todd Cochrane, Dave Finley, Guy Creager, Greg Miller. Tom Bean; back: Lieve DePaep. Rich Bean, Coach Bob Bell, Dan Richards and Terry Dull. 1 TRYING SEASON i 128 I Gecond Gpof for Oriole Cagers The 1979-80 version of Quincy High Basketball brought fun and excitement to the Oriole hard- wood. Under the tutelage of new coach Doug Johnson, the Birds finished the season at 14-7, good enough for a second place finish in the rug- ged Big 8 Conference. The Orioles’ conference record was 10-4. All conference selections included first team- ers Phil Cutler and Jim Keeslar. Loran Fickle earned a berth at Honorable Mention. Cutler was also selected to the Battle Creek All Area team for Class C. Next year’s hoopsters will lose the likes of Cut- ler, Keeslar, Rich Bean, Darin Friend, Kamal Cari- uty and Scott Smith. The Team: front: Jim Keeslar, Phil Cutler; back: Todd Strane, Scott Rodesiler, Mark Ludlow, Greg Miller, Darin Friend, Coach Johnson, Tom Love- berry, Kamal Cariuty, Loran Fickle and Rich Bean. 130 131 This year's squad, under the guidance of Coach Bob Bell, had a rough going of it. Because there wasn’t a freshman team, many of the team members were inexperienced fresh- men. However, through hard work and dedication, they gained much experience and valuable confidence. Although the Junior Birds posted only 3 wins against 15 losses, many bright spots were evident. John Taylor and Steve Hinds led the team in scoring while Steve led in rebounds along with Eric Rice. Tom Bean acted as the floor leader. Even though the squad lost more games than they won, the coach and team exemplified sportsmanship and character throughout their rocky climb. The Team: front: Manager Lance Wiser; second: Jim Burge. Tom Bean, Mike Hagaman, Wally Schultz, Tom Loveberry, Scott Brand; back: Coach Bell. Brett Cutler. John Taylor. Doug Russell, Steve Hinds, Eric Rice. Brad Rurka and David Sobiech. 132 Mafmen Rebuilding The Oriole matmen of 1979-1980 have experienced a solid season of growth. One highlight of the season was when the Quincy wrestlers placed third at the Dan Taylor Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Hillsdale. The team captured second place at the Big 8 Conference Meet. At the State Contest Tim Brewer, most outstanding wrestler of 1979-80 and co-captain of the team, placed fourth at the 138 pound weight class. Although the season was a tough struggle, the Oriole wres- tlers have grown and started to rebuild a strong foundation for the future of the Quincy wrestling program. The Team: front: Coach Downey, John Spragg, Lloyd Paul, Todd Cochrane, Phil Higbea, Von Nicholson, Art Kahaian, Jeremy Martin, Steve Stempien, Brent Parkinson, manager Tom Brewer; back: Kent Falstad, Dave Burlew, Scott Wilkin- son, Mike Hard. Kevin VanVIeet. Gregg Saunders, Tim Brewer. Brent Whitney. Jim Supianoski. Robert Hard. Bill Smith, Alec Legg. John Burge and statistician Nancy Kahaian. 134 135 136 Bui 0 • • The Orioles compiled a 3-10 conference record and a 6-12 overall record but all they needed were 10 more runs and they would have won 9 of 13 conference games. The Orioles were second in the league in team batting average with .306 and they were first in tri- ples, second in doubles and fifth in singles. Bryan Harmon and Scott Rodesiler were named to the first All Conference team. Desig- nated hitter Harmon hit .409 with a .579 slugging percentage while shortstop Rodesiler hit .435 with a .761 slugging percentage. Brian Ludlow was named as a member of the second All Conference team. Ludlow was also a designated hitter who hit .341. Kevin VanVIeet and John Burge were accorded Honorable Mention. The Team: front: Tyler Baldwin, Jim Keeslar, Rich Bean, Scott Rodesiler, Kevin VanVIeet; sec- ond row: manager Rob Smith, Bryan Harmon, Scott Smith, Loran Fickle, Brian Ludlow, Curtis Keeton; back: Darin Friend, Ken Letts, Bob Pres- ley, John Burge, assistant coach Jack Adams and head coach Mike Nowicki. 137 Junior Birds Conduci 138 Successful Campaign The Junior Birds ended their season with a 6-4 record, a .312 team batting average, a .419 on base average, 100 runs scored and 80 sto- len bases. Individually Tom Bean led the team in hitting with a .571 average. He also led the team with a .636 on base average. Mark Ludlow had 3 home runs and 17 stolen bases while Tom Loveberry had two triples and Todd Strane three doubles. The Team: front: manager; second row: Todd Strane, Brent Parkinson, Mike Hagaman, Kent Falstad, Kurt Spalding; third row: Tom Bean, Mark Ludlow, Bill Poole, Wally Schultz, Jim Burge, Scott Brand; fourth row: Doug Loveberry, Steve Hinds, Doug Russell, Brad Rurka, Tom Loveberry; back: assistant coach Downey and coach Gruner. 139 Awesome Thinclads Run Over Opponents 140 The 1980 track squad proved to be too hot to handle as they smoked through their regular season undefeated. They scored no less than 90 points in a dual meet and also won the conference and regional meets. Six team members scored at least 100 points: Keith Teach- out, Mark Ludlow, Greg Miller, Jim Kesslar, Rich Bean and Tyler Baldwin. Teachout set school records in the shot put of 51'7 and in the discus with ’139'9V4Bean set a mile record of 4:29.2 while Kesslar tied the 880 record with a time of 58.6. A new record of 41.0 was set by Baldwin in the 330-yd. low hurdles and the 440 relay team of Supianoski, Faulkner, Smith and Brian Ludlow set a school record of 45.5. Besides breaking seven team records, the varsity played in the district champi- onship game. Even though QHS lost to Jonesville 33-35, it was the first time in girls’ basketball his- tory that a Quincy team advanced so far in tour- nament play. After a slow start, the team’s skills, attitude and teamwork improved greatly as the season prog- ressed. Kris Condra was selected by the league coaches as a member of the Big Eight all confer- ence team and Karice Loveberry was given hon- orable mention. The Team: front: Gail Condra, Carolyn Laurell, Sherry Sherwood, Jill Faulkner, Brenda Cottman; back: Coach Bob Stewart, Cathy Johnson, Karice Loveberry, Dawn Brown, Tammy Johnston, Pam Loose, Kris Condra, Amy Geishert and manager Nancy Bowerman. 143 JVLADY CAGERS DISPLAY WINNING EFFORT The 1979 junior varsity girls’ basketball team played with toughness and determination. This young team, composed mainly of freshmen, prac- ticed hard and played with a tremendous team effort. Using an effective offense, the Orioles achieved a 9-5 conference record and a 10-5 record overall. The Team: front: Renee Matz, Lori Bailey, Gin- ger Hartbarger, Chris Toth; back: Leah William- son, Kristy Hutchins, Kelli Campbell, Linda Allen, Diane Gilbert, Tammy Clark, Nan Weber, Cathy Smith, Chris Johnson, Denise Laurell and Coach Melissa Lloyd. 14 145 Jensen Volleyball MVP Sandy Jensen was accorded all conference volleyball hon- ors along with being selected as the most valuable player. As if all that isn’t a record in itself, Tori Budd set a discus record of 101 '6' 2 , Ginna Rice a shot put record of 37'11 ’ 2 , Kris Condra a high jump record of 5'0 , and Karice Loveberry achieved the highest point total ever in QHS girls' track.
