Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1972 volume:

Gee! 1 get to work in the band- room for six hours tonight. I wish I was back in Ethiopia. The whole Thing! 1 demand a retake! I gonna kill Jake I'm embarrassed CM tCy Wfejfi Qckooly QuitvCtj, IdCjCUv A High School goes through many moods and Quincy is no exception. We have the crying of Queens who have won, yelling of excitement during sports events, the hard work of faculty as well as students to make all activities a success, and the embarrassment that vandals cause. But most of all and what we would like to express in this year's ORIOLE is the comedy and good humor of all at Q. H. S. So welcome to THE LIGHTER SIDE OF 1972, where double button cuffs and pointed col- lars, long hair are in, and the age of majority rule is 18 years of age. 2 A yearbook is a treasure; they are made only once a year, summing up the whole year. There is never another one like it because no two years are the same. I hope everyone can appreciate the hard work and effort it takes a staff to log and present in an enjoyable manner the his- tory of Q. H. Can I dig it, once said a weary traveler. Like I'm seeing star studded strawberries coated with molasses shortening. Can it be we are all in a cosmic mainspring' system. Or is it all just a bunch of chocolate woodchips. Strange may be the answer, but let us remember that a one legged Gila monster did not win the Boston Marathon. So what are we faced with maybe something looney, but what could be more looney than a rawhide hammer. Bolts, Crumbs, Webs, Feathers, and Hands all shape the mind, but why can't we be educated by a crystal blue leop- ard. Instead of a xerox tadpole. But please someone let me see thru ignorance, thru hypocri- sy and all evils that destroy minds and form character. Please just let the moon come shining thru. Dorothy Felts, 1970 Miss Oriole; Sally Fosdick, 1971 Miss Oriole, and now Debbie Doll, 1972 Miss Oriole. 1971 Miss Oriole, Sally Fosdick crowning Debbie Doll as the 1972 Miss Oriole. Happily, Debbie receives her crown. 1972 UiSS Onloh 63 Pabiiofesw Connie Cox, with tears of joy, became our 1911 Homecoming Queen. Dave Weber put a lot of effort running with the ball for a score. The Juniors and Seniors decided to work together on the Homecoming festivities, instead of going through the cut-throat competition that the classes seem to accomplish every year. This took a lot of courage for these two classes to do. Even though they worked together and put on a very beautiful skit, yell and float, the Juniors and Seniors were disqualified, from all competition. All because they wanted to keep harmony instead of playing the war game. was the theme chosen for this year's Homecoming Activities. Each of the classes were to put on a skit, cheer, and build a float to fit the theme and promote spirit for the big battle against Bronson. But as tradition has it for Quincy's Homecoming, it rained and we lost to Bronson with a score of 6-14. Not all was lost as it seemed. Our team put up a beautiful battle and the rain didn't seem to dampen the fans' spirit, especially the sopho- mores for they won the Pep Jug. But the highlight of the evening was when Connie Cox was crowned our 1971 Homecoming Queen! 64 The Homecoming Court consisted of five Senior girls to run for Homecoming Queen chosen by the Senior class. They are (1. to r.) Bev Gallop, Dort Felts, Queen Con- nie Cox, Kathe King, and Patti Larsen. Sophomores received a 1st on their float: Sail to a Victory. The atmosphere at the Homecoming bon- fire was filled with a burning desire to win. Fred Cortright posed as the storyteller while Shelly Strothers listed to the Jun- iors’ and Seniors' version of the Quincy Orioles' victory over the Bronson Vikings. The Quincy High School exe- cutes another great play, The Web of Murder by Jonathan Troy, in a double feature pro- duction on November 19-20. The acting was quite superb al- though there was some difficul- ty with the secret passage en- trance and keeping the blood on the victim's back. But the performers took everything in stride, and the play came off well with the approval of every- one concerned. Andrews Leslie was the first play of the double feature, murder mystery. The time and effort that went into the plays came through in the acting of our stars. But although only the tal- ents of the actors were examined by the audience, the people behind the scenes must not be forgotten for their talents and fine work, such as: make up, props, stage hands, sound effects, lighting, the set, etc. 67 f-f fjfwuess Is Vp-Ufj limb The 1971-72 Tip-Up program con- sisted of the usual parade, pageant, dance, and the carnival on the ice. This year's queen was Teresa Brewer; her first runner up was Judy Honyoust, while her second runner up was Kathy From. The program was filled with fine fill-ins, for instance the Char- lie Browners and the Tri-State Misses. The next weekend were the festivities on the lake and the annual dance. The dance was led by Sal- magindi. There was fun on the lake with games, fishing, eating, and just playing around. lU Dtoty Puxafe CAST (In Order of Appearance) Mr. Frank........................Rick Keith Miep Gies -------------- LuAnn Deal Mrs. Van Daan---------------------Kim Cockrell Mr. Van Daan--------------------Terry Macklin Peter Van Daan-------Dennis Goodwin Mrs. Frank----------------------Cindy Swallow Margot Frank------------Jayne DeLine Anne Frank-----------------Sue Kline Mr. Kraler-------------Bob Beemer Mr. Dussel-------------Jack DeLine Below: 70 Above: Miep watches as Mr. Frank reads Anne's old diary. The classes formed two pep clubs. The 75 girls advised by Mrs. Budd and Miss Ferrell made up many committtees. The committees were (1) to lead the crowd with a cheer, (2) to make posters, (3) to work in con- cessions, or (4) to work on the programs. There were bright spots; for example, Steve Worth set a respectable 13:37 for the two and one-half mile course at Quincy Golf Course. The count dwindled down to 6 people through the school year and a staff of 8 in the summer. Students realized that to make a yearbook required much time, dedica- tion, and the taking of pressure thus many conflictions were involved. None-the-less this is what resulted in mostly one month. In June the staff of 8 completed 109 pages portraying the Lighter Side of 1972, and in my opinion one of the better if not the best, annual in Q. H. S. Mr. Sher- man's number one band marched onto the Coldwater High football field with an- other jazzy (?) dance step, typical of the Sherman era. The rain fell and so did the ratings, as the band re- ceived a two. It was then time to sit down and get ready for another contest, for concert. The band ob- tained a number two last year and meant to get a strong first this year and re- ceived a three. Better luck next year. Sincere. I think they're watching. 104 Watch the Birdie. He felt if he had a band of only freshmen and eighth graders it would result in a better senior band and a better junior band, now called the concert band. In the school year of 1971-1972 he tried it, and for a better junior band it was successful. With this se- lect group another band had to be formed for the seventh graders, the Middle School Band. 107 L to R: BACK ROW: J. Hickok, S. Corrino, S. Delcamp, B. Bowman, T. Macklin, S. Anderson, R.
