The people in any school system ultimately control the school. In Quincy, the people elect a school board, which sets school policy. It hires a superintendent, whose duty is to keep the schools running. All the hiring of teachers, spend- ing school funds, and similar duties are done by his office. He supervises the principals, who in turn run the individual schools. Superintendent Reynolds Interprets Board Policy “Yes, here’s my name. Right here.” “Now teachers, let us reason together.” “When can we get to- gether to talk this over?” “The running of a school system is indeed a complex undertaking.” Michigan State University High School Principal Running A School Takes Teamwork! Science Club Strives To Because of still further cuts in Club Day, the school’s largest club, the Science Club, felt very restricted in its meetings. It continued to interest students in the field of science, and sev- eral trips were planned by the Club this year. The first in Decem- ber had to be cancelled due to bad weather and insufficient sign- up; the club also planned a winter outing to Echo Valley. Trips to various museums were also considered. Vice President, Deb Youngs, handled those meetings for which President Chuck Cook was absent. Will Pam Supianoski and Bob Ball be future scientists? F.H.A., for the “67-68” school year, had a highly successful and interesting program. The club president, Alice Hardy, did a good job leading such activities as bake sales and Christ- mas caroling. The meetings which were held once a month were always well attended and interesting. The school year was highlighted when Melanie Rawson won the “Betty Crocker Homemaker” award. This A-Band Is Number One, Quincy High School students should take a great deal of pride in their A-band which is certainly a credit to our school. Under the direction of Harry Blake, the band has developed into the best in the state, in Class C. Quincy bandsmen began this year by presenting entertaining performances during four high school foot- ball games, and one college game at Hillsdale College, which was a great privilege. During the fall, the Quincy band was invited to the M.E.A. meeting in Battle Creek, where they present- ed a polished concert. The band also takes part in the Homecoming, Halloween, and Mayor Exchange Day parades throughout the year. Hard work and many night rehear- sals go into developing the mature sound and marching effect this band has attained. FIRST ROW, left to right: R. Tuckey, D. Burritt, V. Grimes, L. Hood. The band presented three concert performances for the public this year: A Christmas concert, a concert at Tibbits, and a Spring concert. Present at the spring concert was guest conductor and trombone artist, Mr. Ronald Thielman, from Highland, New Mexico. Mr. Thielman is the composer of Chelsea Suite, a song which was played by the Quincy band. Of course the highlight for the 1967-68 A-band has been the straight “Number I” ratings they have re- ceived at Gull Lake marching contest, and at district and state contests, at Battle Creek. Very much enjoyed by all bandsmen was the trip to Selmers, where they viewed instuments being made. In memory of their effort and achievements the band will have a record made of its concert recordings, which will be treasured throughout the years. FIRST ROW, left to right: M. Boley, J. Aiken, S. Through the year many activities were undertaken. First came the Senior pictures, next came the excite- ment of ordering our caps and gowns, our announcements and our Senior keys. Closely following that came Homecoming which we will always remember for we took the pepjug for the first time by ourselves! Right behind that came Tip-Up and after that Spring, which meant the Jun- ior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Of course, the Juniors as a class participated in Homecoming, Tip-Up, and other activities, while sponsoring the Banquet and Prom for the Seniors. The play originated from George Orwell’s book by the same title. It was presented as a fable in two acts, done in a humorous manner to illustrate a serious point about world government. The play cast consisted of Narrators, Terry Salyer, Pam Bonham, Janet Irvin, Mickey Barve; Boxer, Bill Keith; Major, Warren Brown; Clover, Dawn Pope; Napoleon, Richard Klepack; Squealer, Charles Avery; Snowball, Penny Cox; Mollie, Patti Fidler; Benjamin, Wayne Victor; Moses, Warren Brown; Student Director, Kathy Nutt; Advertising, Vickie Watkins; Stage Manager, Gene Suever; Wardrobe, Cathy Supianoski, Miss Betsy Craig was the director of the play. Here he takes a punt and tears up the left sideline aided by a key block by Bill Bradley. The result, of course, is the winning touchdown. Coaches Longhini and Chard reflect the joy felt by the team and all the fans present. Well, Quincy finally did it. Our football team took the first solo conference championship since 1949. In 1959, though, we held a tri-championship with two other Little C teams. In winning this year we set and broke many records. We put 6 men on the All Conference squad; (Jerry Salyer, Mike Moore, Claude Nance, Ken King, Bill McConnell, and Chuck Ames; Honorable Mention were Bill Bradley, Larry Reichhart, Jim Hutchins, Dan Wilkinson, and Chuck Cook). We also put 2 men on an All-State team: (Mike Moore and Jerry Salyer on 2nd team U.P.I. and Jerry on 2nd team A.P.; Honorable Mention include Mike Moore, Chuck Ames, and Larry Reichhart—A.P.) We went through our first undefeated season since 1949 with a tie as our only blemish; the team also ended up 10th in the state on A.P. and 12th on U.P.I. polls. The most unusual picture of year: Jerry Sal- yer, 48, walks away from the play. Larry Reichhart, 42, cuts inside as Chesty Black- man, 10, gets his head stepped on by a Homer Trojan who also deals a knee to the thigh of Bud Strauss, 32, who counters with an elbow. Chuck Ames, 74, would have been hit by 33 of Homer except for Bill Mc- Connells well-placed toe. From pages 112 and 113, FRONT ROW, 1-r: B. Ball, B. Hickok, R. Huggett, J. Salyer, K. Clark, D. J.V.’s Prepare For Varsity Service Football, on the Junior Varsity lpvel, has been looking more and more like the Varsity Edition. The team is very well balanced; al- though the sophomores dominated the starting lineups, the frosh sub- stituted strongly when called upon. The season, at 4-2, produced many thrills, not the least of which was a heart-stopping 12-6 victory over Bronson; the second touchdown was scored with only two minutes left. Homer supplied another great game and the Trojans won 6-0. Defen- sively, Ken Ball and Gary Ffekle stood out. Offensively, look for Tom Burleson, Jerry Watson, and Roger Glaum next year.' Inexperienced Team Produces 7-10 Record! A 7-10 season by a team which lost its five starters is to be commended. Although inexperienced, the team showed constant and steady improvement. Doug Meiring, the biggest scorer and rebounder, along with Jerry Watson and Phil Warkoczeski, supplied team leadership. Two games stood out as super thrillers: the first Homer game, lost in an overtime, and the last game of the season, an outstanding win over always- tough Bronson. Mike Persails gets two easy ones as Dave Miller looks on. Phil Warkoczeski steals the ball from a surprised Hillsdale player. With Only One Starter Returning, A young Oriole cage team that finished in sixth place in the rugged Little C Conference is looking forward to next season’s campaign. There will be six returning lettermen: Jim Riley, Chuck Cook, Larry Reichhart, Steve Barve, Ron Huggett, and Dennis Grey. The 1967-68 squad consisted of six juniors and five seniors. The “Birds” reached their peak in March tournament play only to lose in the district final to a tough and highly rated Homer team, 91-70. Quincy reached the district finals by beating Jonesville, 57-45 and Reading, 48-46. The Orioles finished with a 9-11 overall record. The 1968-69 team will miss the talents of Captain Jerry Salyer, who averaged 19.6 points per game, and the fine spirit and determination of Chuck Ames, Calvin Marsh, Brian Shaw, and Dave McCann. Other top scorers were Jim Riley, 12.6, Dennis Gray, 8.4, and Steve Barve, 7.6 points per game. Top rebounders were Jim Riley, 11.9, and Steve Barve, 8.5 rebounds per game. Coach White steps off the bench to shout directions to a Quincy player. 120 Coach White outlines the attack during one of the time-outs in the Hillsdale game. Coach White Built A Respectable Team Jerry Salyer certainly took the lion’s share of awards this year.
