This was the year that musicians and singers came to the aid of the world's needy. It all started with Band-Aid in England in November of 1984. Bob Geldof organized a group of musicians from many groups to come together for 24 hours and record a single Christmas song from which all the profits ivould go to feed the hungry in Ethiopia. The song. Do They Know It's Christmas? accounted for millions of dollars. The song was again played during the 1985 Christmas season. This was only the beginning of donations by musicians. (JSA For Africa was next. The United Stales musicians, not wanting to be outdone, came back quickly during the spring of 1985 with We Are The World written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson. Nearly every singer in the U.S. took part in this extravaganza. They produced an album with songs donated by many of the musicians. The video was played over and over again with Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Harry Belafonte, Dionne Warwick, Huey Lewis and many, many others each taking turns with a line or two. The song was sung by many a school chorus that spring and early summer. Again millions were col- lected to help feed the hungry of Africa. Bob Geldof, again appeared and conceived Live Aid, a fantastic all day and all night show in JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, and London's Wembley Arena. Some of the artists participling were. U2. Sting, The Style Council, Phil Collins. The Boomtown Rats. The Who. Led Zepplin, Hall and Oates, Paul Young, and many others. All the proceeds went to feed the hungry of Africa. Radio stations all over the country offered tickets to attend for the largest dona- tion to Live Aid. MTV and local Television stations carried parts of the show and many more donations were made through an 800 telephone line. Early in the summer as the growing season got into sum- mer’s heat. President Reagan started making noises about decreasing aid to the farmers of America. Foreclosures were imminent. One farmer in Iowa shot his wife and banker and then killed himself because of the pressure of payments due for his many loans. Willie Nelson decided that what works to help feed the hungry of Africa would work to aid the farmers in America. He organized Farm Aid along with many country singers and musicians. Ads ap peared on many television stations for months after Farm Aid to try to get more donations. Aid for humanitarian issues was not enough. At sum- mer's end a group of artists from different groups got together under the name Artists United Against Apartheid and produced a song called Sun City, the proceeds from which were donated to a number of groups in South Africa that are dedicated to the dissolution of apartheid. In Boston, the Metro sponsored another concert, Boston Against AIDS. Although not in the same league with the other concerts, it did attract Cyndi Lauper, 'Til Tuesday, and other local talent to help gather funds to do research to find a cure for AIDS. Maybe this is the beginning of a time where the youth of the country will support much of the charity work needed to help the world's needy. ARE WE GREAT! When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for a class of students to dissolve the bonds which have connected them to their families and homes and assume among the powers of the real world the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Mature and the Establishment entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind and the administration of Quincy High School and Quincy Voca- tional Technical School requires that the Class of '86 should declare the causes which impel them to the separa tion. Included herein both in word and photograph are the declarations of each individual member for their separation and entrance into the real world.
