honor of Quiika ipe' r?5fr!nrv fie. Vocational Technical School 5 Mr. LloydM.Creighton The Goldenrod staff is pleased and honored to dedicate the yearbook of 1979 to retired principal Mr. Lloyd Creighton. This past November Mr. Lloyd Creighton. Quincy High School principal retired. Mr. Creighton had been the principal since 1963. Arriving amid a decade which demanded change, he lived up to the expectations of the sixties. Mr. Creighton has been a great advocator of innovation, and the changes he has made at Quincy High dur- ing his fifteen years here have been numerous. When Mr. Creighton came to Quincy High in 1963. the school was very strict and the stu- dents extremely limited. Business students were restricted to taking business classes only while college prep students could not even take typing. Mr. Creighton made the well rounded individual his first priority. A close personal friend of Mr. Creighton’s, Science Department head Mr. John Chrusciel. commented that Mr. Creighton has been behind many major changes for the betterment of students, scholastically, athletically, and in the area of extra curricular activities. Mr. Creigh- ton was behind the merging of the high school and the Vo-Tech and was the founder and fundamental supporter of the Method Center. As Mr. MacDonald, head of the English Department explained, “Mr. Creighton has been a supporter of the total modernization of Quincy High School. Mr. Creighton is also respon- sible for ROTC in Quincy High. He brought the organization to the school during the turbu- lent sixties when it was protested by many parents and students. He is also glad that the school has calmed down and returned to relative normalcy. Yet. Mr. Creighton feels that the school is still rich with spirit, one different from the attendance of football games and rallies, but a spirit shown by the large number of students who receive good grades, participate in sports, and the growing importance of the many clubs and organizations. Mr. Creighton him- self was the advisor of the chess club here at Quincy High as well as being an administrator who lent his support to all of the activities at the school. Mr. Creighton is responsible for the Resource Centers, and is a supporter of experimental education. A little known fact is that it was Mr. Creighton’s idea to try open campus. Mr. Creighton encouraged the use of the method Centers and the new techniques of teaching Spanish which have proved highly successful. The head of the language Department. Mr. Yezukevich, is pleased with the progress and the fact that Mr. Creighton has also supported the International Food Festival, another expe- riment which has worked out well. Mr. Yezukevick commented that Mr. Creighton is very “personable” and generated a warm relationship with a faculty and students. 6 Mr. Creighton is happy with the changes he has instituted at Quincy High School. Two changes he might have made had he stayed on was to try to involve parents more with their children's educations and to have promoted career education for young women. Mr. Creighton retired to Sarasota, Florida and expressed the thought that he would like to get a part time administrative job in Florida. Mr. Creighton would bring a tremendous amount of experience with him to such a position. He started out as a teacher in 1941 at a small school in New Hampshire. He taught four different science and math classes. He was also the basketball, touch football, and girls’ softball coach. Mr. Creighton’s career in teach- ing has only been interrupted once, when he served three years in the army during World War II. He forecast the weather and taught others to do the same. Mr. Creighton said that he had no regrets, and tfiat he leaves the school on good terms with the faculty and staff. Mr. Creighton returned to the school for graduation ceremonies in June. During Mr. Creighton’s fifteen years at Quincy High School he continuously encouraged all the students and supported the programs he introduced. Mr. Creighton has developed a closer relationship between Teachers and students, making the process of education more enjoyable and responsive. The changes Mr. Creighton has instituted will continue to favorably effect the quality of education in the future. The yearbook staff, on behalf of the students of Quincy High School, is happy to extend a heartfelt thanks and a wish for happiness in the future for Mr. Lloyd Creighton. Mr. Lloyd M. Creighton Mr. Lloyd Hill Quincy High School has a new principal. Mr. Lloyd Hill became the principal of Quincy High this past November. Mr. Hill is a quiet efficient man who intends to maintain the pro- grams of Mr. Creighton. Mr. Hill has been seen around the school trying to get to know the numerous students and faculty. Mr. Hill comes to Quincy High School with an abundance of experience. He has been involved with education for twenty years. Mr. Hill taught in Pittsfield for a year, and in Canton High for three, where he also coached football. For twelve years he was a social studies teacher at North Quincy. In 1973 Mr. Hill became Assistant Principal at Sterling. From 1973 until 1978 he was Assistant Principal at North Quincy High School. In 1971 Mr. Hill attended Suffolk Law school nights and received his degree in law. Mr. Hill feels that this law back- ground will prove useful in dealing with disciplinary problems and has worked on committees to revise such things as the Students Rights bulletin. Mr. Hill is also trying to involve parents into their chil- dren's education. In The Homeline, Mr. Hill stressed the importance of the basic skills issue and encouraged parent participation. Mr. Hill is a soft spoken level headed man who tries to get people together in order that the school function more effi- ciently. It is with great pleasure that the Goldcnrod staff welcomes new principal Mr. Lloyd Hill and offers him the support of the entire student body. Mr. Lloyd Hill Assistant Superintendents Mr. William Finney Assistant Superintendent Mr. Arthur Woodward Coordinator of Secondary Education I Mr. John Osterman Assistant Superintendent Guidance Richard Haines Guidance Head Edward Nankin Sylvia Stern Charles Baillargeon Gerald Gherardi Robert Daniele Robert Nolan Gerald Ridge Each morning for the past three years I have been riding a bus to school and in that time I have suffered from bruised ribs, black and blue toes, headaches, and lost homework. Every time I stepped on the smoke-filled bus until I alighted. I realized I did so at my own risk. Getting on a bus with a pugnacious bus driver, who I swear hated teenagers and probably kicked dogs, and half-awake kids with cigarettes dangling from their lips, was not the great- est thing to do so soon after eating breakfast, but nevertheless, it had to be done. As I got on the bus acrid cigarette smoke stung my eyes and filled my nostrils while I fervently searched in vain for a seat. Due to the overcrowding I’d come to a dead stop inches from the bus driver bellowing in my car. “Move to the back of the bus! With gum stuck to the bottom of my shoe. I’d struggle to move further down the aisle, only to stand beside a person who must have never paid heed to deodorant commercials on television. My mouth would quickly dry with my tongue lying liih- lessly in the bottom of my desert-like mouth and to get the heart to skip a couple of beats and race wildly, the bus would fly around a corner on only two wheels. Each time the bus would jerk to a halt persons would fall over one another, crushing toes and jamming books into unguarded ribs, and there would always seem to be an elderly lady whose umbrella point would jab my knee. At least once every week when the bus was half-way to school there was some person, in the very back of the bus. who had to get off at the front door. As this one soul would push and shove his way to the front, he’d smash me. along with a few others on the head with his elbow. The intensity of the blow could then cause two of my six books to go crashing to the floor, skinning the old woman with the umbrella whose steely glaze refused my mumbled apologies. When the bus would finally role to a halt I would stumble off. dazed and aching, only too glad to welcome the cool air that rushed to meet me. I realize now that each time I took a bus to school I took life into my own hands. The Special Needs Department of Quincy High is a special one for special people. People who cannot attend regu- lar classes use the center. The center is very well put together. They have a sec- tion called Food Service, where stu- dents learn to work at cooking, clean- ing. and serving food. Another department is Distributive Services, which covers such things as typing, filing, putting booklets together, using an adding machine and other clerical work. The Housekeeping department teaches cleaning, mopping floors, washing desks and other jobs. Finally, the Packaging and Assembly department teaches students to put combs into proper bags, and put tape on dispensers. These and other skills will be valuable in later life. The center is there to help people who need help: the work of the teach- ers in Special Needs will continue to be helpful for future students. 135 W 1970, A Year That Is Now Only a Memory susan civrtarese elaine dark susan ctarke michael coffey marcia cohen ann coletti john collins The sixties was a time of radicalism . . . Each member of the Goldenrod cast had a specific role to play, resulting in the completion of the yearbook. This year’s Goldenrod Staff was composed of an exceptionally large and talented cast of absentee actors whose teamwork and dedication were above and beyond the call of duty. Also, as in most productions, there was a small group of individuals hiding behind the scenes which was required to perform more than its share of work. Advising a less than ade- quate size team of hard-working individuals was a task greater than most directors would have been willing to undertake. One such director who triumphed over the impossible was Mr. Dana Jones. Mr. Jones, who could have easily directed this year’s exceedingly gifted cast of the popular Absentee Production, generously donated his valuable time and energy toward guiding the underdogs. Through his hours of unselfish work with the Goldenrod Staff, this yearbook has become a long-awaited reality. We. the behind the scenes members of the staff, wish to express our sincere gratitude to Dana Jones for being a truly dedicated advisor and genuine friend. Thanks for everything. D.J. 149 Winter Concert and Art Show 155 The Quincy High School football team had an average season but we had something that teams with good records will never have: Pride. Spirit. Loyally. Conditioning. Totighneu. and Lour. Pride meant that we could not be ashamed if we had lost a game because we were proud to play for Quincy. We could hold our heads high whether we won or lost. Spirit meant cheering each other on. giving each other that extra boost of confidence to help us win. Conditioning meant being in shape both physically and mentally . Loyalty meant that everyone spoke well of the team and we would always defend a te tmmate or coach if someone spoke badly about them. Toughness meant that if we were down in a game we could use that second or third effort to pull us through. Love meant a lot and we really found the true meaning of the word this year. It was love of the game and of life'that helped us to appreciate what we had and why. Playing for Quincy had its ups and downs, but when we were down there was always someone there to help us up. Thai’s probably the best advantage of playing for Quincy — you always could depend on your teammates to help you out — on or off the field. George McCarron I M Bottom row (l-r) Dave Campbell. We have never gone before. This season was many things to the girls on the team. It was a heartbreak, a disappointment, an accomplishment, and most of all it was a learning experience. We learned not only about basketball, but also about life. We learned that there’s no such word as quit or give up , only faith . We learned the meaning of frustration and never-ending hope. We learned the meaning of physical pain and desire. We learned about competitors and rival teams and of true friendships. We learned about ourselves. As we seniors leave, we wish good luck and support for the teams of the years to come and hope that their desire and drive to win never dies. But we seniors will take with us the experience and memories of the past three years. We are filled with mixed emotions as our basketball season ends, but it has prepared us to face a challenge . . . and accept it. His dedication and leadership has guided many an Editor and a yearbook staff through a difficult task of assembling The Goldenrod. Contrary to popular thought. Yearbook Advisors are not inborn with the knowledge of how to finance or organize a yearbook. Although the talent and ability are instinctive, the knowledge and courage must be acquired. This knack or ungovernable drive to organize and establish a quality standard for The Goldenrod was a part of Dana Jones which will not be forgotten. After six years and seven yearbooks as acting Advisor. Dana Jones has decided to hand over this important duty to a new group of individuals. Six years is an extremely long time to handle a yearbook and The 1979 Goldenrod Staff is quite pleased that we were able to benefit from Dana Jones’ many years of experience. The Goldenrod '79 Staff would like to wish Dana Jones the best of luck with his future projects and goals. J. L. and all The Goldenrod ’79 Staff Wc have been in school for twelve years. It is coming to an end. which may bring tears. I am glad for some of my classmates who have managed a career. For those who did not. please don't be in fear. For those who are going on to college, work, or whatever you do. Whatever you put into your future is what you will get from it for you. Make one good decision that will forever last. Try not to forget all of your past. So whatever you do. make the best of your life in the years to come. Love is friendship set to music, which might have been thought by some. All these places had their moments, With lovers and friends I can still recall. Some are dead and some are living, In my life I’ve loved them all. But of these friends and lovers, There is no one compared with you, And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new. Though I know I’ll never lose affection For people and things that went before, I know I’ll often stop and think about them. In my life I'll love you more.
