Text from Pages 1 - 246 of the 1977 volume:

Thomas Crane Public Liirarj Quincy, Mass. .0 This is my letter to the world, •' Thot never wrote to me, — The simple news that Nature told. With tender majesty. Her message is committed To hands I cannot see. For love of her, sweet countrymen. Judge tenderly of me! DEDICATION Mrs. Ann Cannon Mrs. Shirley Healey The dedication of the 1977 GOLDENROD to Mrs. Cannon and Mrs. Healey was an idea that received enthusiastic and unanimous sup- port from the Senior Class. Need anything in the Guidance Office from lunch tickets to college applications? Then these two helpful ladies, with a combined experience of 19 years in the Quincy Public School System, will efficiently and cheerfully supply the necessary information. Consistently concerned for the students of Quincy High, Mrs. Cannon and Mrs. Healey have earned the gratitude of thou- sands of seniors over the years. We, the class of 1977, realize that the entire school is fortunate to be able to rely on two ladies who truly operate the office for the benefit of the students. Therefore, we take great pleasure in dedicating the GOLDENROD to two fine people who are, themselves, dedicated to the students. Thank you very much, Mrs. Cannon and Mrs. Healey! 4 Photographs and Memories Photographs and memories Christmas cords you sent to me All that I have ore these to remember you Photographs one) memories All the love you gave to me Somehow it iust can't be true That’s all I've left of you But we sure had a good time When we started way back when Morning walks and bedroom talks Oh how I loved you then Memories that come ot night Take me to another time Back to a happier day When I called you mine But we sure had a good time When we started way back when Morning walks and bedroom talks Oh how I loved you then Summer skies and lullabies Nights we couldn't say good-bye And of all of the things that we knew Not o dreom survived Memories are embedded through repetition. The homeroom period is a part of the high school experience that few students will forget. An anxious glance at the clock is followed by the reassurance by the teacher that the cards haven’t gone up yet. Perhaps there will be several announcements over the loud speaker or the homeroom teacher will try to collect yet another in an endless series of forms needing parental signatures. Some students catch up on news with their friends and others review for an up-coming test or put the finishing touches on an assignment due first period. At precisely 8:1 2 when the bell rings, the room rises as one to start the day. 6 7 10 Entering students in September of 1977 immediately realized that, as always, some things had changed and some things had remained the same. To complement the newly- waxed floors, modern blue lockers lined the halls. A new schedule packed with study halls replaced the old one with resource time. Sophomores were still directed to the swimming pool on the fourth floor, though, and room 306 still awaited transformation. Books of all descriptions remained the educational mainstay, and Mr. York remained in the supply room to keep a couple of thousand students in paper and pencils. And as the floor shine dulled under heavy traffic, the year began. n w The fond memories of a successful school year are due, in part, to the smooth operation of the many parts that make up the high school environment. Detentions for tardiness were instituted to alleviate the crush of students signing in late at the Assistant Principal’s office. A renovated nurse’s office and a new guidance complex inspired confidence. No matter what the question, people were willing to help find an answer. Above, Mr. Wagner explains the crazy English language to Vo Thi-Kim-Dung. 15 SUPERINTENDENTS Dr. Lawrence Creedon — Superintendent Mr. John Osterman — Asst. When you begin to reminisce will you be able to recall all those events which were the most meaningful to you? Will you remember all the pleasures and pains of senior year, or will the memory of them be dulled by the passage of time? The three years we’ve spent together at Quincy High and Voc- Tech served as our stepping stones into life. The experiences shared by the class of 1977 should be locked into our memories to be cherished forever. WILL YOU REMEMBER . . . Hoping that we would meet Mr. Basiliere's challenge on the first day of school to become the best senior class QHS and QVTS ever hod? Coming to school in September and hardly believing you were finally a senior? The trouble you got into when you tried to socialize in the library? Dressing up in the middle of the blazing summer heat to go and have your senior picture taken? Buying your class ring and having to find 77 people who would turn it? The weary hours spent on filling out college applications, and the amount of money you spent just to apply? The fits of nervous tension you experienced before and during the SAT'S and achievements? Wanting to find out what your board scores were but dreading the fact that you had to open them when the time finally came? The four consecutive days of relaxation during the unexpected January snow storms? The fire drills during the winter's sub-zero weather? The inauguration of Jimmy Carter as the United States' 39th president? Staying home at night to watch Happy Days, Laverne Shirley, Welcome Back Kotter, Starsky and Hutch, Charlie's Angels, and The Gong Show? Coming back to school last September and finding all resource periods were replaced with study halls? The excitement of being accepted to your first choice college and the disappointment if you weren't? That many seniors were switched from their old familiar homerooms to brand new ones? The renovation of the guidance complex and the principal's office? Being one of the lucky ones who had their old green locker replaced with a shiny new blue one? P052 1 02-22-77 The confusing pass system during the second semester? The new innovation in television and the popularity of the novels for television and continuing dramas such as Rich Man, Poor Man Books I, II, Roots, Captains and the Kings, Executive Suite, and Once an Eagle? All the money you spent on buttons, candy, and raffle tickets to support the school's clubs? The hassle you went through when you wanted to be dismissed? The fear of knowing that all your marks were being sent to colleges? Being in tenth grade and wondering what it was like to be a senior? Praying on the day of an important test that you'd have a substitute? The protest of the senior class and the petition against study halls? The great feeling of spirit all the seniors had at the Thanksgiving rally? Trying to scrape up enough money to pay for prom tickets, class dues, the yearbook, and your graduation robe? The restoration of the pony to our school's lobby? The return of the school newspaper's former name and the posters that read: The Pony Express Rides Again! Attending Page and Stage's production of Patterns and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? Signing up for the prom committee and hoping your name would be picked? The hope of all seniors that we would win the Thanksgiving game and the disappointment when we didn't? The hours you spent in detention for being late? Looking forward to the half days on the second Tuesday of every month? All the fun when the student council collected money for charity on Halloween, pictures with Santa, and the Valen- tine Express? The school dances featuring Spur , Minus One , and Crystal City? Praying that the basketball team would win one of their games against Rindge Tech? The last set of mid-years at QHS and QVTS? Trying to get your sign-out sheet filled? Dancing until two a.m. at the prom? The feeling of joy and sorrow at graduation? CLASS WILL Last will and testament of the class of 1977 of the Quincy-VocTech, High School, in the city of Quincy, County of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts. Be it remembered that we the 1977 class of Quincy High-VocTech High School, hoping that we are about to graduate from, leave, or otherwise be evicted from this institution of learning, and being of partially sound mind and body have banded together to draw up this our lost will and testament so that we may dispose of our scattered and sacred possessions which we have accumulated during our three year sentence. To the following teachers we leave: Mr. MacDonald — a training manual entitled How to train feral children in ten easy lessons. Mr. Macomber — the class of 78 — Good Luck!!! Mr. Orsini — a bottomless cup of coffee and a box of munchkins. Mr. Owens — a box of colored chalk and a tape recording saying — Can you see it? Mr. Jones — a plaque soying Is it done yet? Mr. Koubek — a 1 st year Italian class that doesn't know what Esca della stanza means. Mrs. Harrison — a concert choir that dresses properly. Miss Hagenbach — a French room with a built in tennis court. Mr. Ron Martin — a map of how to find your identity. Mr. Koolian — permanent detention duty. Mr. Smith — a microbiology class that takes their tests and doesn't argue. Mr. Mulready — a journalism class that comes in on time and some money for the paper. Miss Alfaro — a recording of sientarse close. Mr. Ligor — a student who can do a perfect research paper. Mr. MacLaughlin — the BASIC necessities of life. Mr. Weeks — a British Literature class that appreciates poetry. Mrs. Christian and Mrs. Myatt — many more Latin clubs (Good Luck!) Mrs. Lane — some eosy chemistry books and a new blackboard to write assignments on. Mr. Harrington — a new I Love B.C. sticker. Mr. Saniuk — chemistry classes full of Italian students who are well versed in Polish jokes. Mr. Merrill — a psychology class that likes to argue. Miss Wolk — a sociology class that knows the definition of an ethnic group. Miss Kornmeyer — a perfect collection of bugs. Miss Goldman — more seats outside her office and longer cut cards. Guidance Office — new computers and perfect schedules. Mr. Creighton — we leave a new yearbook staff and the hope that he didn't waste all of his patience on us. Mr. Myrick — resource periods to keep him busy. Mrs. Robinson — a case of mousetraps. Mr. Comer — a free and open system. Mr. Serrecchia — another Mark Baker. Miss McKenna — a quiet and well-mannered homeroom to help her recover from the last one. Col. Allen and Sgt. Mencarini — an ROTC division that doesn’t get height sick. Mr. Miller — some turtlewox. Mr. Kisby — a handkerchief Mr. Paul MacDonald — some more company for 2:30. Mr. Crozier — an answer to his own questions. Mr. Perrilli — a new box of cigars. Therefore, we the graduating (?) class of 1977 of Quincy High-Voc Tech having thus disposed of all our worldly possessions do hereby set our seal to this last will and testament and deliver it into the hands of the oncoming senior class on this thirteenth day of May, nineteen hundred and seventy-seven. So, os we are about to go Out among the cold world's strife, and slide down the razor blade of life, this solemn document is now witnessed by these venerable and revered personages. In Witness Thereof: Lawrence P. Creedon Lloyd M. Creighton Dana C. Jones In every organization there is one person who makes it all possible. Unfortunately, most times this person does not receive the credit that is due. This year we would like to recognize the effort ond care that Mr. Dana Jones has been putting into the GOLDENROD yearbooks for the past five years. Mr. Jones gives of himself to the book. However, he never makes the decision, but forces the students to think for themselves so that when the book is done they can honestly say that it is truly their book. For all that he has done in the past and especially this year, we the staff would like to thank him and let him know that his work is appreci- ated. Thank you Mr. Jones!! Alcarez Mark Tranter James Trubiano Victor Kudarauski Darlene Stetler 137 It was the sixteenth of July, 1976 when I got off the plane in Son Francisco with my teddy bear, some favorite books, and twenty pounds of junk. I was not very excited but peacefully sleepy after the long flight from Japan. When I arrived at Stanford University where I had a four day orientation with nearly five hundred AFS students from eight countries, I called up my friend in New York, who had come to Japan to study in my high school for one year as an AFS exchange student from 1975-76. During my conversation with him, I think I realized I was in America for the first time. A little more than half a year had passed, and as I prepared for mid-terms it was very interesting to read through my notes. At first,l couldn't take notes myself and tried to copy the notes of someone sitting next to me. It was success- ful enough in some subjects but in my AP English class I can remember clearly, that I had a very hard time because any two students would be writing down different things. So, naturally the first several pages of my notes of the class hardly make any sense at all. I felt very bad about it and was always afraid Mr. MacDonald would kick me out of class. It has always been my favorite class though I couldn't understand half of it at first. I tried very hard to catch up in all the classes. I read all books and did all assignments and essays. The peak of my tension caused by my poor English came about two weeks after the first day of school. I felt that I was doing too poorly and because of it, all the teachers didn't want me in their classes. One of those days, Mr. MacDonald, as a joke told the class I had done an essay which had nothing to do with the class and wanted to see me after the period. I took this very seriously, and fell in the depth of despair: I will be kicked out of his class! I will be kicked out of the school! It was scarey because I loved all my classes so much. When I was waiting for him after the class in the English Resource Center which is one of my favorite places in the United States, I was ready for the tragic moment. He walked toward me in a hurry and sat down. Pointing at my essay on the table, he said, Etoh, your essay is all right, but you did a wrong thing . . . And he explained to me the difference between structure and function not only with patience but with warm kindness. When he left after five minutes, I said to myself, “Well I can rewrite the essay and stay in the class. It's great. But I don't want to do the same thing ever again. Through this event, I learned that I didn't need to be afraid of being kicked out, and I began to ask questions until I was satisfied. I realized that all the students and teachers wanted me in their classes no matter how poor my English might be. By my eighteenth birthday, October the sixteenth, I had become almost used to everything including school work with the help of friends and teachers. So, it made me laugh and be happy to look over my notes for mid-terms because it reminded me of many funny things that I had done in those six months. It also showed me the progress of my English. But the most important thing I have gained here is not the ability to use English, but to gain fantastic friends and to. meet teachers of life. All the people around me have always been so kind and helpful. I was surprised and moved deeply when I found these people helped me not because they expected something from me, but simply because they wanted me to be happy and my happiness made them happy at the same time. This has made me decide to do something for world peace in the future because I want to share this marvelous experience filled with love with all the people in the world. Thank you very much for all you have done for me. I will be proud to be a Quincy High School graduate along with my great friends. I hope we will see each other somewhere in the world after our graduation. Members of the club helped decorate and participate in the Ruth Gordon Festival, prepared and presented a puppet show to benefit the South Shore Civic League, and performed a pantomine festival for chil- dren at the Merrymount Elementary School. A haunted house was set up at the South Shore Plaza and the proceeds went to chority. In December, Page and Stage put on their first play of the year entitled Pat- terns. One Flew Over a Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey was also performed by the club. The Quincy High Vo-Tech Drama Club entered a State Drama Competition sometime in March. Special thanks is given to Mr. Stephen Weeks who advised the club during Mr. Moffett's absence. Earnestly we give you this book to enjoy what it holds, not to bicker on what it hasn't. THE CO-EDITORS Of YEARBOOK 1977: Doro Solvotore, Mory Hogon and Joyce Fanlucchio. FOOTBALL TEAM Quincy High-Voc Tech's football team had only a fair sea- son this year. The team compiled a 4-6 record. Offensively the team was superb led by Mark Buchanan who was the leading scorer in Division 1. Mark was helped along with the offensive chores by Lenny Picot a junior fullbock. Outstand- ing seniors were Wayne Gardiner at guard, Paul Vallatini at right guard, and Mike Farrell a favorite pass receiver of Den- nis Walter — quarterback. The offense was hindered by the early losses of two players who could have supplied a potent offense attack. The players’ talents that were missed were Wayne French and Mark Giordani. Defensively the team was led by Pat Gibbons the captain and a three year veteran of the team. Defensive end Sal Cos- cia and linebackers Larry Colley and Bob Pettinelli also car- ried the defensive chores. 185 BASKETBALL 1 jt ROW: J. Faulkner, K. Amej, M. Corie , M. Finnegan, J. Connolly, J. OiVello, Coach Joe Amorsino. The QHS-QVTS basketball team con- tinued to shine this season under the talented coaching of Head Coach Joe Amorsino and Assistant Coach Mike Saniuk. The team stressed togetherness in their style of play, and had no one bright star, but many stars. Jack Uhlar led scoring on the team. His credits included being a Patriot Ledger All Scholastic Player, being cho- sen on the first team All Star in Subur- ban League and holding the QHS- QVTS record for most points scored in one game. Ed Daley was regarded as the quick- est guard in QHS-QVTS history, and as the 1 defensive guard in the Subur- ban League. Mike Lomie is in the top 3 for scoring in the Suburban League. Lyle Morrison, Mike Kennedy, Ed Callahan, Roger Kvom, and Dennis Walter were cited by Coach Amorsino os being quite impor- tant to the team effort. Each one suc- cessfully contributing to the many victo- ries. 187 188 189 GIRLS BASKETBALL lit ROW: C. lynch, P. Thorley, L. Molvesti. 2nd ROW: $. Whittemore, P. Consfos, C. Oliverio, D. Russo, I. During the 76-77 track season he has worked extremely hard in order to revitalize the ailing winter track program at Quincy High. Working without proper facilities. Coach Loverty still managed to improve on last year's dis- mal 1-8 record by posting wins over Brookline and Cambridge Latin. The team members sold buttons, proclaiming WE'RE BACK ON TRACK to raise money for a banquet and jackets. Top scorers this season included, Mark Buchanan (High Jump, 50), John Seville (2 Mile), Jim Oriola (300), Donald Jones (Mile), and Paul Ladas (1000). 195 WRESTLING lit ROW: D. Modden, M. Sheo, W. Grohom, D. Thibeoult, J. Golub, L. Picot, C. The Quincy High-Voc Tech Wrestling Team, in its third year of existence, finished with an excellent record of 21-1 this year. The season was filled with many high points including wins over Brockton, Dedham, and North Quincy. A great wave of disappointment followed the 20- 18 loss to Wolthom. The team prided itself on its will to win and desire to improve as evidenced by the improvement from the first year record of 2-9. The seniors on this year's team started wrestling with Coach Mariano three years ago and built the program up to the point where Quincy High was one of the powers in Massachusetts wrestling. They hove left behind an established, exciting sport with great prospects for the future. 197 198 HOCKEY TEAM 1 st ROW: J. Deitich, D. Bory, M. Giordoni, J. Buchan, J. Covonagh, M. Ricciardi, M. Gollizia, P. Bomberry. 2nd ROW: Coach Bob Sylvio, P. Clifford, M. Furry, J. Norton, T. Cohill, 8. Jolly, J. Campbell, R. Malloy, C. Erickson, 8. Deitich, J. Rizzi, Asst. Coach Jack Crowley. 3rd ROW: Tim, M. Vontomc, R. Aholo. This year the hockey team had an up and down season. Coach Sylvia was quoted as saying there were as many ups as downs. Some of the high points of the season were the victories over North Quincy, the tie against Weymouth South, and the victory over Weymouth North. Some of the low points were the two losses to Brookline and Cambridge Latin. All and all it was a winning season with the total num- ber of wins outnumbering the losses. Quincy High Vo-Tech is proud to say that Tommy Cahill, the leading scorer in the Suburban League, is a member of the team. The co-captains this year were Jim Buchan (sr.) and Mark Giordani (jr.). Coach Sylvia said that most of the players this year were new and they will be back next year with added experience. So, look for a winning team in the coming year. 99 200 201 BOYS SWIM TEAM lil ROW: 8. Dofiovon, 0. Notorongelo, G. Duptone, E. Fenby co- optoin, J. loHive co-coptoin, V. L0R010. 2nd ROW: E. Regon, P. The Quincy-Voc Tech swimming team has seen a tre- mendous improvement since the sport began one year ago. It has continuously climbed up from the bottom posi- tion since last year. One of the most amazing swimmers this season was senior Jim LaHive. He previously considered swimming only a hobby, however, his outstanding performance has increased his interest in the sport. In the diving competi- tions another senior has proved to be very valuable. Paul Palmer is considered to have been one of Quincy's best divers during the 76-77 season. 202 GIRLS SWIM TEAM 1 st ROW: J. Morrison, J. Mine, V. Collins, Coach Elaine Morphy. 2nd ROW: S. Chiochio, M. Duron, I. Peterson, 1. Davis, I. Burke. 3rd ROW: $. Tautavisis, C. Morrison, V. Morrison. Under the direction of Coach Elaine Murphy the girls swimming team also improved a great deal this year. Four sen- iors, Sheila Burke, Valerie Collins, Jane Morrison, and Jean Milne were the co-cap- tains. Among the outstanding competitors during the 76-77 season were Sheila Burke and Susan Murphy. Jean Milne could be considered the player that has shown the greatest improvement. She began at first as a non-competitive swim- mer but worked very hard and was able to compete in every event. Although the sea- son was not a tremendous success, in their final meet against Blue Hills Regional they came in first in every event. FIELD HOCKEY 204 SOCCER TEAM 1st ROW: I. Avitoble, R. With only five returning var- sity players the prospect for a victorious season seemed doubtful. However, good play and extra hustle from the players made up for the lack of experience and provided an exciting season. Seniors on the varsity team included Jeff Harrison, Ed Campbell, Mike Kelly, Mike DelVecchio, and co-captains Mike Kennedy and Jon Golub. 207 BOYS GYMNASTICS 1 t ROW: R. Brodeuf, T. DciGreco, A.
