Superintendent Mf Dr. Lawrence P. Creedon Dear Graduate: When you receive your copy of The Goldenrod, it will be in part but one more reminder that the shadow is lengthening on the most formative years of your life. Hopefully, all of us associated with the Quincy Public Schools with whom you have come in contact have served you so that in the years to come the shadow will burst into rays of new opportunities for you. In the final analysis schooling is concerned with but three things and they are to assist young people in becoming more self-fulfilling individuals, while help- ing them to become good citizens and competent workers in a world that is maximally effective for all. To work with you toward the realization of such ideals has been our pleasant task over the years as we have been privileged to nurture your growth, agonize over our collective failures and puff up with pride over your accomplishments. Be there no mistake about it, the world you have grown up in has been steeped in seemingly insurmountable problems and tragedies, yet with the publication of another annual edition of The Goldenrod goes the message that a new pro- mise is upon us and that another generation has arrived ready to apply its new strength and youthful enthusiasm to making life better for us all. Good luck!

Dr. Charles Djerf Dr. Djerf, a lifelong Quincy resident, was born on June 3, 1910 of Finnish immigrants who came to West Quincy in the 1880's. He was a graduate of the Willard School and Quincy High School in February 1928. He attended Houston Junior College, Houston, Texas, for a year before transferring to Tufts College and graduating in 1933. He graduated from Tufts Medical School in 1937 and interned at Worcester City Hospital for 26 months. He established a general practice in Quincy in 1939 and maintained it for five years. From 1944 to 1946 he served aboard the USS Carliste, stationed at Long Beach, California, treating servicemen returning from the Pacific Theatre of World War II. After the war he went to the University of Illinois Research Hospital as a resident pediatrician for a year and then completed a two-year residency at Boston Floating Hospital. He was on the staffs of Quincy City Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Tufts University - New England Medical Center Hospitals. In 1953 Dr. Djerf first ran for public office and was elected to a four-year term on the School Committee. He served on the Committee 16 years, during which time the Quincy Vocational Technical School was planned and built. He also advocated special programs for retarded, physically handicapped, and gifted children in Quincy schools. In 1970 he was one of several Quincy citizens who founded Survival, Inc., which has been involved in setting up a drug rehabilitation center in Quincy. Under his guidance. Survival developed a hot-line, walk-in center. Therapeutic community, and methadone program. Making a tribute to Dr. Djerf, former Mayor and Sen. James R. MacIntyre said: Charles Djerf was a true humanitarian who literally gave his life for our community and children. Fearless in his devotion to what he saw was right, he often rushed into controversy, but always stayed committed to his ideals until he saw his cause completed. Mayor Walter J. Hannon: He showed great leadership on the Quincy School Com- mittee. And no matter what hour of the day or night. Dr. Djerf would perform his medical chores and donate his time to public service of the people of Quincy. Dr. Lawrence P. Creedon said: I can think of no man who spanning a period of nearly two decades, has done as much for public education in Quincy as has Dr. Djerf. The Rev. Dean Teigler, president of the South Shore Mental Health and Retardation Area Board spoke of Dr. Djerf's contributions: Young people should know that in Charlie Djerf, they had a real advocate, and a real friend. He cared about everything! And with this dedication we wish to impress on those who never knew him our memories of this great man who will live forever.
