“
As the seedlings of a flower fall So we shall one day drift apart Dancing in the wind, the seeds are searching to alight We too, shall watch for our places beneath the sun When some seeds rest upon the earth, be it fertile, be it bare Some shall continue on, one to find a better place and one condemned to fly forever... Some of us shall root where our feet first touch the ground Others will strive toward goals yet undefined ... And a few, like the condemned seed, will always be in question With virgin roots that will never touch the earth ... Once settled, the seeds shall sprout As we too are born into a new life Those among the stones arejburdened with endless struggles And those in fertile grass shall climb to ceaseless heights be the path of life for us th times of hardship, with times of ease Until one day, the stalk shall bend and break So then we too must wither Goldenrod 75 ;uas Public Ubnij Quincy, We the Senior Class of 1975 wish to dedicate the 1975 Goldenrod to a truly great man, Dr. Charles Djerf. 4 k 1 Dr. Charles Djerf Dr. Djerf, a lifelong Quincy resident, was born on June 3, 1910 of Finnish immigrants who came to West Quincy in the 1880's. He was a graduate of the Willard School and Quincy High School in February 1928. He attended Houston Junior College, Houston, Texas, for a year before transferring to Tufts College and graduating in 1933. He graduated from Tufts Medical School in 1937 and interned at Worcester City Hospital for 26 months. He established a general practice in Quincy in 1939 and maintained it for five years. From 1944 to 1946 he served aboard the USS Carliste, stationed at Long Beach, California, treating servicemen returning from the Pacific Theatre of World War II. After the war he went to the University of Illinois Research Hospital as a resident pediatrician for a year and then completed a two-year residency at Boston Floating Hospital. He was on the staffs of Quincy City Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Tufts University - New England Medical Center Hospitals. In 1953 Dr. Djerf first ran for public office and was elected to a four-year term on the School Committee. He served on the Committee 16 years, during which time the Quincy Vocational Technical School was planned and built. He also advocated special programs for retarded, physically handicapped, and gifted children in Quincy schools. In 1970 he was one of several Quincy citizens who founded Survival, Inc., which has been involved in setting up a drug rehabilitation center in Quincy. Under his guidance. Survival developed a hot-line, walk-in center. Therapeutic community, and methadone program. Making a tribute to Dr. Djerf, former Mayor and Sen. James R. MacIntyre said: Charles Djerf was a true humanitarian who literally gave his life for our community and children. Fearless in his devotion to what he saw was right, he often rushed into controversy, but always stayed committed to his ideals until he saw his cause completed. Mayor Walter J. Hannon: He showed great leadership on the Quincy School Com- mittee. And no matter what hour of the day or night. Dr. Djerf would perform his medical chores and donate his time to public service of the people of Quincy. Dr. Lawrence P. Creedon said: I can think of no man who spanning a period of nearly two decades, has done as much for public education in Quincy as has Dr. Djerf. The Rev. Dean Teigler, president of the South Shore Mental Health and Retardation Area Board spoke of Dr. Djerf's contributions: Young people should know that in Charlie Djerf, they had a real advocate, and a real friend. He cared about everything! And with this dedication we wish to impress on those who never knew him our memories of this great man who will live forever. Superintendent Mf Dr. Lawrence P. Creedon Dear Graduate: When you receive your copy of The Goldenrod, it will be in part but one more reminder that the shadow is lengthening on the most formative years of your life. Hopefully, all of us associated with the Quincy Public Schools with whom you have come in contact have served you so that in the years to come the shadow will burst into rays of new opportunities for you. In the final analysis schooling is concerned with but three things and they are to assist young people in becoming more self-fulfilling individuals, while help- ing them to become good citizens and competent workers in a world that is maximally effective for all. To work with you toward the realization of such ideals has been our pleasant task over the years as we have been privileged to nurture your growth, agonize over our collective failures and puff up with pride over your accomplishments. Be there no mistake about it, the world you have grown up in has been steeped in seemingly insurmountable problems and tragedies, yet with the publication of another annual edition of The Goldenrod goes the message that a new pro- mise is upon us and that another generation has arrived ready to apply its new strength and youthful enthusiasm to making life better for us all. His touchstone is his challenge No matter what his field of endeavor, a man must measure himself against the demands of his world. To rise to the challenge ... ultimately, this is the reason men build bridges, climb mountains, and do a thousand other things that manifest personal achievement and satisfaction. — Anonymous — QUINCY - ! NORTH - s V Time in a Bottle If I could save Time in a bottle The first thing that I'd like to do Is to save every day 'Til eternity passes away Just to spend them with you. If I could make days last forever If words could make wishes come true I'd save every day like a treasure and then. Again, I would spend them with you. But there never seems to be enough time To do the things you want to do Once you find them I've looked around enough to know That you're the one I want to go Through time with If I had a box just for wishes And dreams that had never come true The box would be empty Except for the memory Of how they were answered by you. Being an American Field Service student living for one year with another family, meeting many new people, going to another school and having new friends is the most wonderful experience. Adjusting to a completely different way of living, talking another language, also by becoming involved in all kinds of activities is not as difficult as it seems to be. Since the school system of Belgium and the United States differ immensely, it has been an experience in many ways to be a student at Quincy High. Everybody was really enthusiastic and especially the teach- ers, they showed alot of interest and understanding. I also had a great time in the gym department. These months went by too fast for me, I wish that I could stay alot longer. I don't want to think of leaving and saying good-bye. Maybe I should have done alot more while I was here because I think that being active in life is very important. Love, togetherness, and friendship is among all kinds of people everywhere and that I found through A.F.S. I learned alot more about myself too, thanks to Linda, my American sister, the whole Grant family, all A.F.S. members and friends. I enjoyed every minute of my stay, and I'll never forget what you all did for me during these months. I wish for all Q.H.S. students, teachers and others the very best. I really enjoyed being one of you. I hope to see you again sometime in the future ... who knows, if you have a chance to visit Belgium, drop by anytime, you're welcome. The record for the season was 3-7. Co-captain Pre- ston Carroll was the highest scoring half- back in the S.L. with 70 points securing places on the All-Suburban Team and the All-Scholastic Team. The other co-cap- tain, Jake Columbus was a defensive tackle on the team. The other senior standouts on the teams were Jim Forrester - an adequate quarterback with a good passing arm, Doug King — the center who proved to be a big claw for the team, Paul DeChristofaro - a standout defen- sive lineman, Mike MacKenzie - the leading pass receiver on the team. Bob Carella — a running guard who did an excellent job, and Ted Wiedemann - the leading defensive tackier. The other mem- bers selected to the All-Suburban Team were Doug King, Mike MacKenzie, and Ted Wiedemann. A good nucleus of boys are coming back for next year's team as many juniors saw plenty of game action. The sophomore team with a 7-3 record had some boys who will help consid- erably next year. 141 T h a n k s g i v i n g D a y ■Quincy over North Wrestling 1st row - Mike Doherty, Mike Farrell, Tom Bamberry, Peter Pagnano, Bill Dever, Nick 2nd row - Brian Brown, Antone luongo. Coach Sylvia praised the team for being a credit to the school and summed up the season as having more ups than downs. A mid-season loss to Brockton was cited by Coach Sylvia as the turn- ing point for the Presidents because they took time to build back up to full momentum. This team, the highest scoring in Quincy's history, also has a group of seniors who have never lost to North in their three years. Four players (the most in the league) were named to the Surburban League All-Star Team. Frank Guest led all scorers with 30 goals and 15 assists on the offensive line with Bob Barry and Bill Hamill. Other shifts included Ted Wiedemann, Rich Lucier, and Richard Brooks; Pete Raymer, Steve Neville and Ed MacDonald; and back-up Paul Lynch, Anthony Cedrone, and Mike Conti. Mark Fanning, Peter Hajjar, and Tim Buchan played in goal behind the defensive line of Brian Nevins, Rick Avery, Leo Kearney, and Dennis Ber- tone. The team was ably managed by Ed Campbell and George Higgins. Coach Sylvia summed up, Next year looks bright with key people return- ing. 1st row - Brian Nevins, Ed MacDonald, Leo Kearney, Ted Wiedemann, Pete Raymer, Mark Fanning, Richard Brooks, Steve Neville, Richard Lucier, Rick Avery 2nd row - Ed Campbell (manager), Rick Hutchins (ass't coach), David Previte, |im Buchan, Nick Cyr, Dennis Bertonni, Peter Hajjar, Bob Barry, William Hamill. Bill Dacey, the third leading scorer in the league, compiled impressive personal statistics as one of the team's co-captains (18.5 points per game, and a year's total of 72 assists and 217 rebounds) and was named to the All-Star 1st team. Duck Conners contributed 91 assists and a 10.2 point average as the other co-captain. Steve Connolly, Bob Dacey, Jack Uhlar, and Kevin Donovan, are returning varsity starters that figure to play an important part in next year's team. Uhlar and Connolly, along with Conners, were awarded honorable mentions in the All-Star game. The rest of the varsity team included: Bill Breen, Dom Venturelli, Chuck McDermott, and Mike Lamie. Coming off three straight league championships, the Presi- dents lost ten starters from the 1974 season. However, the juniors took up the slack. Headed by Marco DiCenzo and Mark Raymondi the team complied a respectable 8-8-2 record in the tough Suburban League. Mike Kennedy, a sophomore goalie, performed well in the net. Mark Raymondi was the high goal scorer followed by junior Joe McEcheran. Scott Simpson, a junior, provided tough defense and was elected team captain for the '75 season. The year was intended to provide experience and build a team for the coming season which would once again find the Presidents in their usual top of the League spot. The team's final league record was 1-8. After winning the first meet by a wide margin and losing the second meet by only two points, the Quincy runners ran into tough going and dropped their remaining seven meets. The team perked up for the Conference meet and managed to pull out a fifth place finish. Plagued by a poor turnout and lack of facilities, the team was just starting to get going at the end of the season. The team had several outstanding performers during the regular season. Co-captain Harry Williams had a long undefeated streak in the 300 but it was finally broken during the Rindge Tech meet. The team's other co-captain, Kevin O'Brien, ran both the mile and two-mile with good success depending upon where he was needed. The distance events improved during tremendously as the season progressed. The distance and middle distance runners under the tuleage of Joe Catalano, All American Runner from Boston State College, put in many long, hard workouts that paid off in much improved times. Strong man Bob Varrasso dominated the weight events for Quincy and threw the shotput over 42 ft. The team was rather young, with only senior Ed Co- letta, one of the leagues premier hurdlers, being the only one not returning. Getting everyone back next year should be a big lift and will certainly show in an im- proved record. 155 T «• front - Dennis McCarthy, Sam Cravina, |ohn Ross, Kevin O'Brien, Mike DeAngelo, John Haapanen back - Charlie Park, Frank Yee, Mr. Tom Hall, Coach, Stan Park, Bob Thorne Cross Country Track Cross Country along with the other fall sports entered the Suburban League in September. The tough Suburban teams had their way with Quincy except for a few meets when The Presi- dents showed that they will be tough in the next few years. Quincy added a new dimension this year, however, with a full fledged girls team, which was somewhat more successful than the boys squad. Outstanding for the male harriers were Bob Thorne, Kevin O'Brien, and Charlie Park. The timeless one, and bid him preserve In aging minds, this book In which one day we may dawdle much. Bring in reflections of our high school years; Let their be no finale to youthful schemes. The only yearbook advisor is Mr. jones. Take from this store of years. Containing our golden memories, a page From the days in which we lived our youth. And give to him who shared our endless teens. And if this gift seems too kind Its comes to show how fond in youth we are of him. The only yearbook advisor is and will be Mr. Jones. 172 Debra Alpert, Julie Ahern, Linda Buttomer, Kathy Loughran, Ginger Denvir, Marianne DelGreco, Mr. Dana lones, George Condos, Louise Kadlick, MaryBeth Mulcahy, Lauren Scarnici, and Alicia Cahill. Once settled, the seeds shall sprout As we too are born into a new life Those among the stones are burdened with endless struggles And those in fertile grass shall climb to ceaseless heights |$o be the path of life for us With times of hardship, with times of ease Until one day, the stalk shall bend and break So then we too must wither And be laid in quiet rest ...
