v nio ias Crane pabllc Lftrar. C Quincy, Mass, i P r DEDICATION Dedication can be described as devotion to someone or something, and is found in many forms. There are two people within Quincy High School who have especially lived up to any connotation of dedication that has been found. These two people are presently teaching and have been teaching at QHS for over twenty-five years. Within these twenty-five years they have patiently taught and worked with students, giving the best they have had to offer. Teaching is not just standing at the front of the classroom lecturing. It is working with the individual students to help them straighten their own ideas and problems. Teaching is helping pupils to see the value of knowledge and how to use this knowledge to its fullest in making their lives more rewarding. Teaching is not beginning the job at 8.00 A.M. and ending it at 2:30 that afternoon. It is giving up leisure hours to work with a student who needs extra help in his studies or just to talk with someone who needs a listening ear. Two teachers in our school have most often demonstrated these characteristics and have done so outstandingly as teachers and compassionately as people. We, the members of the Senior Class, therefore dedicate GOLDENROD 1974 to them and wish them much good fortune for their future. 4 Mr Russell Raynor Mr. Russell Rayner has been teaching at Quincy High School for 34 years. His first year of teaching was in room 303 where he still teaches today. According to Mr. Ray- ner, his room is the only thing that hasn't changed. Mr. Ray- ner's first goal was to become a Math teacher, however, due to an overabundance at the time, switched to Physics and attained his masters in the subject from Brown University. Mr. Rayner feels that his students today are more knowledgeable and sophisticated than those in the past. He attributes this partly to television which he feels in many ways has increased the learning rate of students but it has also restricted their imagination and creativity. To learn and to find new knowledge is a great ex- perience and Mr. Rayner encourages his pupils to strive to gain these on their own initiative. On weekends and holidays Mr. Rayner enjoys biking, hiking and swimming near his cottage in Maine where he and his squaw will someday retire. Before this, how- ever, we wish him many more enjoyable classes. Mrs. Kdlhorme Myatt Mrs. Myatt who first came to Quincy High School 27 years ago, is our enthusiastic Latin teacher. She attended Trinity College in Washington D C. and majored in both Latin and English. During her first four years at QHS, she taught Latin. She is very active in Latin Club programs. Her activities include Bake Sales to raise a Latin Scholarship, dinner at Walsh's for the Latin Club members and out of sheer generosity, cook-outs in the summer at her home in Canton. Her terrific personality and great sense of humor has made her a favorite among the students of Quincy High. Over the years of teaching at QHS, she has taken part in Page and Stage, been an advisor of a yearbook, been a member of the Newswriter's Club and along with Mr. Rayner, was in charge of a class day one year Her many years at QHS and her genuine interest in students is and will be remembered and appreciated, now and in the future. 5 Mr lloyd Creighton, Principal Administration Mr. Lawrence Babin, Director 6 7 Mr, Gene Macomber. Asst, to the Principal Dear Graduate: Certainly, Congratulations is the thought for the day and is appropriate for each and every one of you. The phrase it is hard to be a teenager today has become so ingrained in our conventional wisdom that it has all but taken on the status of folklore. However, as I have had occasion to observe and be with you, the class of 1974, it seems to me that the vast majority of you are wholesomely unaware that being a teenager today is supposed to be a difficult plight. At about the time you were entering junior high school, student militarism became commonplace on college and high school campuses, and we, here in Quincy, were not completely spared. As you grew and matured, you had an opportunity to weight in the balance the activities and actions of those who were seemingly bent on destroying the school as a social institution. If you had followed the lead of the most militant. I'm sure that our world, our thoughts and your aspirations would be much different than they are now as you anticipate com- mencement. Possibly, the more skeptical among you are thinking: I doubt it! The world and the school is just the same as it was and nothing I can do will change it. Well, I don't think so. Your quiet, one-by-one rejection of a life style of discord as demonstrated to those of us who have been privileged to know and to work with with and for you, that teenagers, high school students, are a mature, and articulate group of young Americans. For all of you, graduation this June should be viewed as but the first of countless commencements yet to come. Commencement need not be limited to graduating from school. Better understood, com- mencement should be seen as the opportunity to meet each new task and job with quenchless enthusiasm. Lawrence P. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others. Even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others you may become vain and bitter, for there will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortune of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is, many persons strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe if unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep pace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. Max Ehrmann 29 30 Nexi the gall bladder. Young 80 Being an American Field Service student is a great experience in many ways; you learn to know yourself better, you learn a new culture and a new way of living. You meet many people, some of whom become your best friends. This is one of the intentions with AFS, friendship, togetherness, and love. There are of course many other aspects about AFS, some more important, some less. Those friends I've made, I know will be hard to leave in July when I return to Norway, but I hope we will keep in touch across the ocean. I wish I had met more of the students and made even more friends. Since the school system in Norway and the United States differ, it has been an experience in many ways being a student at Quincy High. I'm glad I got along well with the teachers. There was one thing I missed at QHS--the political interest among the students. From my environment I am used to all kinds of political groups involving discussions and activities. I hope for the good of the students that they can have more information about politics and more political activities in the future. I want to wish all the students at QHS the very best in whatever they tend to do after the big day. It has been fun being one of you throughout the year. Take care and if you ever find your way to Norway--drop by. In friendship and peace, Geir I soon discovered Through error and trial. That you weren V any different. So with the help of a smile R i valries became forgotten things And we found the joy That friendship brings. Despite a promising preseason start, many outstanding players, and a super strong defense, the season was a dis- appointment for the Presidents who en- ded with a 3-5-1 record. The Crunch Bunch defense earned its title as the stingiest defense in the league , and av- eraged 5 turnovers per game, limiting the opposition to only 7.0 points per game. Although the offense was also made up of outstanding players, including co-capt. Robin Carrera (GBL All-Star Quarterback), they couldn't quite click on each scoring opportunity, which resulted in several heartbreaking losses. Co-capt. Mike Var- rasso, who started 27 consecutive varsity tames over the last three years, was the team's MVP. Other oustanding players in- cluded: )im French (All-Scholastic Guard), Bill Joyce, Bob Benn, Bob Pettiti, Fred Donohue, Bob O'Neil, Wayne Ponder FOOTBALL (team top scorer), and co-capt. Paul Riggs, one of the GBL's premier line- backers, who unfortunately was sidelined for most of the season because of in- juries. Once again, for the THIRD consecutive year, the President's exceptional effort, talent, and teamwork won for them the soccer league championship. They ended the season with a 10-1-3 record. The one loss marked the end of a fantastic THIRTY-SEVEN game unbeaten streak over the last three years. The team, in general, was a defensive organization comprised mostly of seniors, the majority of whom have been members of the team for the past three years. All played beyond the expectations of their fine coach Ron Martin. A most unfortu- nate injury ended the season early for Tom Tasney, the team's starting left wing. Mike Cullen was named to the Eastern Mass. All Scholastic Team for his continued outstanding perform- ance in goal again this year. Bob Boyle and Marco DiCenso were voted league all stars by the other members of the team. Other seniors included: John Sweeny, Mas Ranalli, Steve Ra- nalli, Tony Michelangelo, Bob Sullivan, Bob Gordon, Fred Candeloro, Brian Mitchell, Mike Floridia, and Fred Glennon, all of whom have contributed to these three consecutive league titles. The loss of 4 starting seniors from last year's championship team forced them into a long and careful period of development. Although one of the biggest problems was filling the job of center, the girls finally got themselves together and formulated a hard hitting set-up game They had many close games, including a loss to North Quincy by only 3 points. One of the best games this season was played against Medford who held an undefeated 1st place position. Quincy played a hard game coming from behind to clinch a 32-28 victory and enabled them to take a third place in the final league Standings. Is row: Marilyn Silverstein. Donna Brickley, Terry Tucker. WINTER TRACK The Quincy High School Winter Track team had a very successful season, finishing with a 5-2 record, good enough for a second place tie in the league. Highlights of the season were victories over first-place Malden, which was their only loss and over North Quincy to end the season. The two high scorers for the time were Gary Delorio and Arthur Di Loreto. The sea- son started out with a loss, but the desire and continupus effort of the team helped pull them out of their early season plight. The powerful President's team then went on to win 11 of their remaining games, losing 6. Two of the wins were obtained over co-champs Mal- den and North Quincy. All of the players de- serve much credit. Tri-captains Mike Cullen, Bill Joyce and John MacFarlane were out- standing with their leadership and desire for victory. Bob Benn, Mark Dwyer, and Tom McKinnon inspired the team with never-ceas- ing hustle. Unfortunately, Fred Donohue, an excellent center, was injured and thus side- lined for many games, but while he was play- ing he proved he was a top rebounder, and exhibited much effort and experience. First year coach Joe Amorosino's leadership and tactical maneuvers pulled the team through many tight situations. QUINCY Opposition 53 B.C. High 54 61 Medford 50 65 Weymouth South 54 62 B.C. For the fourth time in the last six years, the QHS Hockey team earned a Mass. State Tournament position, ending the season with a 13-4-3 record. But mere figures cannot tell all. It was the people-the players the starters, the substitutes, and the injured who came together to make the 1973-74 season what it was. The continued success of the hockey team, under the directorship of Coach Robert Sylvia, is attributed to great teamwork, led by Captains Al Lancione, Pete lanis, and All Star goalie, Glen Prescott. Other seniors included: Bob Boyle, John Sweeny, Pete DiBona, and Bob Costello. Sophomore Frank Guest led in the scoring department with 22 goals, followed by junior Ted Weideman with 20. Highlights of the season were the defeat of North Quincy by a score of 7-3 and the defeat of defending league champ Malden, the biggest upset of the season. After a loss to a tough Norwood team in the tourney, QHS hockey was able to walk out of Boston Arena with their heads held high, because they were proud of the season they left behind.
