In Coach Conroy’s first year as Head Coach, he may have produced one of the best squads in the school’s history. The team's only loss came at the hands of a strong Everett club, but even in defeat, the Presidents looked like champs. In this game Ouincy was down by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The spirited Ouincy club came back and scored twice but were stopped on what would have been the game winning two-point conversion. In the annual Thanksgiving Day game Ouincy was victorious over city rival North Ouincy. This game saw 13,0(X) people jam Veteran’s Memorial Stadium to view the battle. Booting fifty-two goals, Quincy finished second place in the league in the scoring department. The Quincy High School basketball team finished with thirteen wins and seven losses. Unfortunately, the team fell short of making the Tech Tournament by one game. Highlights of the season included exciting overtime victories at New Bed- ford, Chelsea and Malden and the decisive game with North Quincy which elimi- nated the team from the Tech Tournament. Senior Co-captain Jack McWilliam was the team’s playmakcr at a guard posi- tion. The other guard position was occupied by sharpshooting Ed Scanlon. Bob Gustavsen's shooting and rebounding ability helped during the entire season. At center, senior Co-captain Kevin Mullin played exceptionally well covering oppo- nents usually five inches taller than he. Juniors Steve Berlucchi, Jim Rcndlc, Mike Jordan and Paul Fitzpatrick received valuable experience which should serve the team well next year. Though the hoopsters often worked under disadvantages, they were still able to provide Quincy High School with an exciting basketball season. There were some high spots in the season, though, as the Presidents defeated North Quincy twice, 7-1 and 7-4. Quincy also retained its dominance over Everett’s Hockey team, by defeating it twice. Everett has yet to defeat Quincy in league play. If the Hockey program is pushed in the Junior Highs, there is no doubt that Coach Hutchinson will have Tourney teams in the future. Coach Kchoc was in a building year with sophomores and juniors providing much of the action. Sophomores Chuck Jones and Norm Bower and junior Pete Kolson all participated in the shotput. The big story, however, came from senior Dick Bigelow. While competing in the B.A.A. Meet, Dick set a school record of 6.0 seconds in the 45 yd. high hurdles. In the state meet, Dick tied for first place in the high jump while setting another school record of 6'2 . Dick was the only New England trackman qualified for the Nationals at New York’s Madi- son Square Garden in two events—high jump and high hurdles. Because of an injury Dick was unable to attend. Mr. Mitchell is very optimistic about this Spring’s team. Within its ability and spirit, the team has an excellent chance of winning the South Shore League crown. The team could then qualify for the Eastern Mass. State Championships. If successful there, the boys hope to be invited to the New England Interscholas- tics. This Spring’s team will include Steve Goldman, Buzz Gillis, Dave Lubarsky, John Erickson, and John Sullivan. With many of the boys already recognized as outstanding players, in the New England area, the team should be one of the best ever.
