GOSSARD Superintendent of Schools MR. WILSON Principal A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Time is our most precious possession. We should make the most of it. Our life span is limited by the amount of our physical endurance. We must use every minute preparing for the future. We cannot recover lost time. Now is the hour, has tremendous meaning to all of us. Arc we mak- ing the most of our opportunities? Are we scheduling our time to get the proper balance,—time to learn,—time to play,—time to rest? As we progress through school, let us think of a well-known advertisement: LOST: Somewhere between sunrise and sunset; sixty golden minutes, set with sixty diamond seconds. No reward is offered, for they arc gone forever.” Best regards to the staff and the student body. Sincerely, GEORGE A. WILSON Principal MR. DALY Director of Trade Department 5 MR. ANDERSON Assistant Principal Wc, the Class of Nineteen Sixty-One, dedicate this book to MISS MAUDE F. MIXED GLEE CLUB Music! Music! Music! That is the favorite pastime of Quincy High School’s Mixed Glee Club. Perfection of tone, timing, and enunciation is its goal. Under the demanding direction of Mrs. Gale Harrison, this group performs at the annual Spring Concert, the District Music Festival, the Christmas assembly, and other events that call for good music. Want to visit France but can’t? The next best thing is the French Club. At the meetings, members enjoy films about France and listen to speakers who have traveled there. During the year, the French Club holds a Christmas Party, buys a basket of food for a needy family, and at the end of the year, holds a picnic. In the spring, the officers: Carol Gomstcin, president; Edmund Stcigman, vice-president; Elaine Mancil, secretary; and Leon Hurwitz, treasurer, plan the gala “April in Paris Ball” under the supervision of Mr. Goldfarb. SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club, sponsored by Miss Patriquin, is one of the most active clubs in the school, meeting twice a month. This year, it sponsored a Christmas party for the sight conservation class at Coddington School, and sent a Care package to a Spanish-speaking country. The highlight event was a Mexican supper held near the end of the year to conclude the club's activities. Officers are Judy Laukkanen, president; Susan Malaguti, vice-president; Linda Skantz, secretary; and Bette Blacklock. treasurer. This very active group of girls, under the direction of Mrs. Willis, becomes ac- quainted with the fundamentals of good home life, parliamentary procedure and financial management of a household. This year, the Club sent money to CARE, to the Jimmy Fund, and to Quincy Hospital for equipment for the children’s ward. Other projects included a cake sale, a dance, and a rummage sale. Future Home- makers repaired and renovated clothes for members of the faculty, and made new ones for themselves and families. Row I: K. Chase, M. Edmunds, M. Farley. M. Koslowski. B. Elrick. P. As members of the Harrison A. Keith Future Teachers Association, they enjoy such special ac- tivities as observation teaching at Coddington El- ementary School, a visiting day at schools around the city, trips to nearby colleges, and an induc- tion tea in the spring, attended by many local dignitaries. Under the capable direction of Miss Wheeler, the F.T.A. officers, Elaine Follis, pres- ident; Janet Libby, vice-president; Doris Keniley, secretary; Janet Brennion, treasurer; and Joan McDonald, librarian, try to maintain a profes- sional organization. Headed by Judi DeCostc, the cheerleaders arc responsible for those memorable rallies intended to act as a spark to set that Q.H.S. school spirit on fire. 52 Any girl at Q.H.S. can shoot baskets, knock down tenpins or swat at “birdies” to her heart’s content, and perhaps even bring home a shiny trophy to grace her mantelpiece—if she belongs to G.A.A. FOOTBALL The 1960 Quincy High School football team compiled one of the best records of a Quincy team in many years with 5 wins, 3 defeats, and 1 tic. The new head coach, Mr. Jack Garrity, and his staff arc to be credited with forming a winning team out of a few returning lettermen. Much to Quincy's dismay, the season opened with Brocton, the powerhouse which went on to become Class A champion. After losing this game 36-14, Quincy showed in later games that they had learned from their mistakes. The next two Saturdays were victorious. Quincy rolled over a slow Somerville club 26-0 and edged a scrappy Everett team. The following two games proved that Quincy had a solid club. Losing to Malden, the Greater Boston League champions, by one point in the last four seconds and tying a strong Brookline team, Quincy showed that they could play on even terms with the powerhouses of schoolboy football. Being a late starter in the next three games, Quincy gave the fans many thrills. Coming from behind, Quincy beat Chelsea 13-6, Weymouth 22-6, and Medford Before 12,000 in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game with North Quincy, Quincy just did not have the defensive advantage they had shown throughout the season. This fact, combined with an inaccurate passing attack, paved the way for a North Quincy victory 28-20. 56 The enemy caughl Nice try. Wally Defense Action plus 57 Penetrating the line J. Boean J. BASKETBALL Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy Quincy The Presidents’ 1961 basketball team, undoubtedly one of the best in Q.H.S. history, completed a record season by compiling a seventeen win, one loss record, and winning the Greater Boston League Championship. Highlights of the season included a record high scoring spree of 109 points against Revere, 90 points against North Quincy, and 85 and 73 points against Somerville High, beating them twice in one season, a feat that no one can remember happening before. Through hard work and good sportsmanship, the team qualified for the Tech Tournament. However, a consistent offense and a persistent defense on the part of Lawrence Central eliminated Quincy from the Tourney by a score of 69 to 56. A great deal of credit goes to the boys and to their two fine coaches, Mr. Finnegan and Mr. Baseliere, who brought the team along in true Quincy High fashion. RECORD 58 Malden 52 76 Medford 56 90 N. This was only the second time in nine years that Quincy did not make the Tournament. Coach William Hutchinson remarked that Ed Grogan, a two-year letterman, and John Houghton, a three-year letterman who was elected captain at the end of the season, played steady defense throughout the season. Ed LeNormand was praised for his clutch goals that won the North and Malden games. Jack Valle was singled out as an able utility man. Coach Hutchinson also pointed out that the three leading scorers were juniors and sophomores, and this together with the fact that the seven goals in the last games were scored by sophomores, proves that Quincy is a young club with good prospects for next year.
