Q.H.S. - OUR TREE Our Tree of Knowledge is deeply rooted in a country rich in history and culture. Cultivated by a people proud of their heritage and nurtured by each new generation, this tree is sustained by the ever-growing prosperity of our city. Founded in 1625, Quincy was one of the earliest set- tlements in New England. It was separated from Boston in 1640 but remained a part of Braintree until 1793 when it became a town. Since 1888 it has been the only city in Norfolk County. Living in a city which provides a direct entrance to the past gives the youth of Quincy an opportunity to learn the characteristics of great men. As loyal subjects of the Crown, the men of Quincy played their part dur- ing the seventeenth century; as revolutionary patriots, they fought for freedom; as citizens of Massachusetts, they gave their whole-hearted support to the new Re- public. We who live in a land of such glorious heritage 10

OF KNOWLEDGE are justly proud of the past. Residents of Quincy take great pride in the fact that their city is the birthplace of two great Presidents— John Adams and John Quincy Adams. Their homes attract people from all over the world and provide a first-hand education for the youth of Quincy. The for- mer Presidents and their wives are buried in the crypt of the First Parish Church, which is located in the heart of the city. Here in Quincy, too, was born John Han- cock, first signer of the Declaration of Independence. The John Hancock Grammar School was named in honor of this great American statesman. While some citizens of early Quincy were becoming leaders in education and government, others were lay- ing the foundations of industry. The development of these industries made Quincy a prosperous business center. The growth of this city from a community of farms to a center of industrial activity was due in part
