To us you will remain our students and we shall continue to be interested in your progress. Visit us when you have the urge to do so and you will be assured of a warm and friendly welcome. I wish you well. To you who have completed a four year course, I extend my heartiest felicitaf tions. I have watched you grow from childhood into fine young manhood. I have admired your ambition, your zeal, and your determination to master the techniques that will equip you for service. It is my happy privilege to say to each one of you, VVell done. Many of you will enter the armed forces and will join the thousand other Queens Vocational boys who have reflected such high credit on themselves, their school, and their country. I am glad that as you go to take your places and play your important parts, that the war clouds are at least beginning to break and that the light of peace begins to emerge. VVhether your lor places you in the lighting forces or in industry, you have acquired skills at the QVHS that will stand you in good stead. l am proud of you and know that you will give a good account of yourselves. You go with my thanks for the friendships that you have permitted me to enjoy, for the loyalty you have shown to your school and to me, and with the fervent prayer that God may watch over you while we are absent one from the other. lkflost sincerely your friend and principal, CiHARLES VV. LAFFIN bedication f u Ni QT ! 469 VVe, the graduating class of June 1945, dedicate this, our year book, to Unity-the unity which binds different color, racial and religious groups into one-Americans. This unity blazed trails, laid tracks, built cities, and saw the establishment of our country. Now unity plays an even greater role as the Allies harmoniously work to unite the world into a brotherhood of nations for the Pre ervation of the peace. Louis A. Herels hoping that 'civvies' will be the order of the day before long. Pvt. Peter Becher, England, about to take off but grounded due to weather, writes - I was clean out of cigarettes and sure badly off. VVhen I came back to my tent I found your gift on my bed. Lucky we didn't take off, but when we do I'll have a good supply of cigarettes, thanks to you. Slfc Harry Ruff, Shoemaker, Calif.-'AI arrived here after a four day ride. First of all it was a day coach all the way down, and the train was so crowded that the first night my buddy and I slept in a baggage rack which was just a bare steel shelf, not exactly comfort de luxe, but better than sleeping in the aisle as many did. VVhen we did arrive, we were set for a good nightls sleep. But our sea bags and hammocks hadnt arrived and we slept on springs. Vtlhen I finally did get my regular bunk it was the first time I ever really appreciated my horse hair stuffed mattress. Victor Brackenborough, Glenview, Ill.-After completing Electricians Service School- Believe me, what Mr. Long taught me at Queens helped me to complete my studiesg they were tough. Dan Voccola, Oceanside, Calif.-Navy Communications School- Stuck with weekend duty. I was thinking of my liberty, at which time I would be in Hollywood trying to get into thc movicsfy Pvt. Kenneth Conrad, who has just become a male nurse, calls himself- UA GI with a feminine touchf, Cpl. Charles Sershen-Assam, India- Ive seen a great many things I never expected to see, like the Ascension Isle, the Great Taj Mahal, and many other things. Think I would feel pretty bad if I were left behindf, Pvt. james Loughran, Troux Field- It :eems to me that the Long Island Boys are doing their share in winning the war. There are three other fellows here from Queens. The two Kratky Brothers and Prank Canloviefl They are studying electronics and will go on to radar. 'l hc C.A.P. was set up one week before Pearl llarbor to mobilize civilian pilots and planes for voluntary wartime service. C.A.P. Pilots immediately went to work llying rescue, search, antifsubmarine, courier and many other types of missions to relieve ever-growing pressure on the AAF. Their assistance was valued so highly that the XVar Department declared them an Auxiliary ol' the Army Air Forces. The purpose ol' the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Training program is to extend pre- aviation training to young men and women ol' high school age who are planning a career in military or civilian aviation. ln helping them to fulfill their plans, the C.A.P.C. gives them the basic knowledge which will enable them to go on to more advanced studies. Queens Vocational lligh School has go members now active in the C.A.P.C. NEXVMAN CLUB The Queens Vocational lligh School Newman Club is a Catholic cultural and social organization for the boys and girls of the school. Meetings are held in St. Teresa's Lyceum. 44th Street and goth Avenue, VVoodside, Long Island, once a month, on a selected Sunday afternoon at 3:00 P. M. The popularity of the Club is shown by the greatly increased membership. The activities consist of social gatherings with informal discussions, dancing, games and refreshments. Many lasting friendships are formed in this wholesome atmosphere. The principal events are the Corporate Communion of the Club Members and the annual lVlemorial lWass said in November for the boys of the School who have made the Supreme Sacrifice for their Country. The Spiritual Advisor of the Club is Reverend Arthur Kane, and the Faculty Advisors are Miss Loretta Moore and Mr. Philip McCabe. The ofhcers of the Club are: President. David Brackenp Vice President, Muriel lVlcClayg Treasurer, Dominick Torreg and Secretary, Dolores Kruzc. REVEILLE REVEILLE, the Queens Vocational High School paper, was started in April 1944 and the first copies were mimeographed. REVEILLE through the months has managed campaigns. REVEIILE campaigned for a Splash Party, for a gym, and against VVet Passes Ctoo badj. REVEILLE tried to wake the students to their democratic responsibilities. Mr. Reynolds' song, Kitty Lives in Brooklyn, now being sung on ships out in the Pacific, was also popularized by REVEILLE. Tn january 1945 the Victory Sentinel, the Queens Vocational lligh School Scrviceman's paper, was combined with REVEILLE. The Victory Sentinel is now sent to Servicemen who were former students. It reaches spots in desolate places. The circulation of REVEILLE is goo copies per month. Hannah Murray and Annabelle Taub are former editors who have helped to make REVEILLE the talk of Queens. Doris Ncntwitch and George Mitesscr are this term's editors. Mr. Beckoff is faculty advisor. HONOR SOCIETY Every year Queens Vocational High School takes into its care some two hundred new personalities, all of whom are expected to be much wiser after four years in its halls of learning. From these two hundred, some tenfodd members are qualified for acceptance into the Queens Ilonor Society-ten outstanding students from each high school year- Ereshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior. TIIE BOROUGH CONFERENCES These conferences are a series of meetings in different high schools in Queens. Representatives of all the schools in Queens meet and discuss current topics. Some of the recent topics have been: Draft of I7 Year Olds, Post VVar Draft, The National Election, Dumbarton Oaks and other very interesting and controversial topics. Each conference has a main topic such as T have mentioned. Then we break up into panels, to discuss the subetopics, after which we get together and summarize. These confer! ences result in further discussions during Social Studies periods in our own schools. Ending with an Assembly period in which two or more students give their opinions, then final summary, these conferences have proved to be very stimulating and have produced some student leaders in politics.
