Kingston - once the average student wanders outside the campus and the surrounding ghetto, he finds himself in a city with much to offer. Tourists flock to see the familiar sights of Fort Henry and Bellevue during the summer months. Sailboats and windsurfers glide along the lake well into the autumn. Overnight red ivy adds colour to the gray stonework and yellow leaves cover the trees along the lakeside. Rain and snow make the city a blanket of gray and white but the long awaited spring with its tulips and warm days make the wait worthwhile. 61 1 B The 13th annual Beer Brewing Contest, co-sponsored by Molson's and Golden Words, was an amazing success. 100 entries were judged and the brew Pussy Piss, declared the winner. The real winners of this event were the Angada Children s Hospital and the CFRC Go Stereo campaign who split nearly $1000 in proceeds. 63 f B 1« 69 TTOO-r+OO Camp Outlook, with bases in Kingston and Hamilton, is an organization of very special individuals. Each summer these people take disadvantaged kids from their city environments for canoe and camping trips. Follow-up activities such as skating parties and winter camps allow kids and leaders to keep in contact all year-round. 70 SNOW FUN A weekend of sun and brisk tem- peratures contributed to the success of Kingston's second Winterfest. Saturday's activities, under the watchful eye of Sir Hop-a-lot. the mascot, continued throughout the day at the Confederation Park Basin. Queen's once again defeated R.M.C. and C.F.B. Petawawa to win the historic hockey tournament. Helicopter rides, dog sled races and obstacle races were among the ac- tivities attended by large crowds. For those who did not wish to brave the cold, indoor events and displays were offered. On Sunday the focus switched to the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour Site where ice fishing, diving and other events took place, judging from the crowds and the enthusiasm Winterfest will continue to be a diversion for us during the winter months. 71 Each week The Queen's Journal brings us news and stories which are of interest to the student population. In an unofficial survey taken by the paper, it was found that most people do read the Journal. This year's joke issue was relatively tame but it did feature Principal Watts on the cover of the Rolling Stone. news ’n’ numbers The Who's Where Editors... Apologize for... These Blank Pages... (Among Other Things). Repeated apologies for several delays in the distribution of the Who's Where were given to the students of Queen's. A problem with the computer programme of student listings was the cause of the delays. We finally received the Who's Where in November, a month after the normal distribution date. 73 After moving into their new offices in Roland Michener Hall, Golden Words enjoyed an entertaining and exciting year. Canada's Other National Newspaper continued to expose and report the im- portant things of campus life that in- cluded squirrel fishing, seal hunting and the Robin-Zanmail production of the movie Street Party. In addition, the job listings from Career Planning and Placement continued to be a feature presentation. Besides the weekly humour, G.W. continued to co-sponsor and sponsor some very successful campus events. As a flip side to the Beer Brewing Contest (page 62) the annual Milk and Cookie Dance was another success. The proceeds from this squeaky-clean fun went to the good people at Camp Outlook. Finally, the annual G.W. Ball Hockey Tournament was won by the Cheektowaga Tramplers, 8-7 in overtime. 74 WOW . . . my very first appearance in the Tricolour. Sponsored by the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society, The Lictor took on a new look this year. Each edition concentrated on one area of interest such as prison reform, homecoming and the film media. A large and enthusiastic staff worked hard to get an issue out each week (in previous years the paper had been bi-weekly) - although it lead to some really late (early?) press nights (mornings?). The only setback was the rejection of the referendum question which would have entitled The Lictor to 25c of the student interest fee. The Chronicle The Chronicle is a bi-weekly publication of the Commerce Society. Compared to the other papers on campus. The Chronicle keeps a low profile. The paper contains mostly news and interest stories for and by Commerce students. 75 CFRC was established in 1922 as 9BT. Shortly alter, the call letters CFRC - Canada's Famous Rugby Champions - were adopted. The station is run by Queens Radio, a group of volunteers from the Queen's and Kingston community, who work very hard under the supervision of the club executive and station management. Queen's Radio is dedicated to alternative programming. To the listener this means giving Kingston and Queen's community Classics, Rock, Jazz, Public Affairs, Folk. Blues and Golden Gaels' football and Hockey. A true alternative to com- mercial radio. CFRC broadcasts Thursday and Friday evenings and the entire weekend the year- round. 1982 was a memorable year for the station. The Go Stereo' campaign - designed to raise funds to pur- chase a new FM stereo transmitter - was successful in the February AMS referendum allowing CFRC to broadcast seven days a week in stereo. The station's future is bright. By the fall of 1983, when the CRTC grants us a new FM licence, we hope to have Gone Stereo. The fall of 1982 is a milestone in the station's history. It marks sixty years of noncommercial broadcasting making CFRC one of the oldest surviving stations in Canada. CFRC - First in Kingston - We hope you enjoyed listening. 76 77 79 PASTIMES 82 t 85 86 Exams Exams EXAMS 88 89 91 92 93 94 Graduate Studies W. Well-known in- ternational groups, such as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble and the King s Singers appeared on the stages of the Grand Theatre and Grant Hall. Elly Ameling, the World class soprano, and John Bay as Groucho Marx were among the varied individual artists who performed for local audiences. In October John Gray's Billy Bishop Goes to War returned to Kingston for three nights and once again enthusiastic audiences were thrilled with the portrayal of Canada's famous W'orld War 1 flying ace. 98 r Artists 99 100 Murray McLaughlin David Wilcox Gordon Lightfoot 104 105 107 Queen's Best, produced by the Q.E.A., is an annual showcase of excellent amateur talent from across the campus. This year was no exception, in fact there seemed to be an even wider variety of acts, such as the skit Silent Hunter by Darren Schmidt, and John Corrigan gave a standup comic routine which rated with the pros. Musicians Brenda Lee Katerenchuk and Joan Gardner were repeat performers while Doug and the Slug (only one) represented a new group of talent in this year's show. The proceeds from this year's show went to the leaders and kids from Camp Outlook. QUEEN’S BEST 108 What's up yours. Doc? , this year's version of the Medical Variety Night, featured a wide variety of class acts. Dance routines to Fame and O.T.O.T. ' were en- thusiastically received. Many will remember the battle between the Soviets and the Canadians in the skit, Surgery Night in Canada. Willy'n'Mikey, a singing duo, returned to the show again this year. On a more serious note, a slide show on the International Year of the Disabled was accompanied by an original song. 109 QUEEN’S BANDS After much letter writing it was confirmed - Queen's Bands would be heading to Dallas to perform in the Cotton Bowl Parade. A total of 130 musicians, dancers, majorettes and cheerleaders represented Queen's and Canada at the annual televised event. The uniforms, some newly purchased after some hard work to raise funds, caused a few stares from the Texans who rarely, if ever, see men in kilts. As am- bassadors of the university, the band members made an excellent impression on our neigh- bours and no doubt they will be asked to return. FINE ARTS 114 Bedlam Theatre Company, a group from a fourth level drama course, emerged to produce four evenings of comedy. Sellout crowds proved the popularity of the group among both students and staff. Liza Strada. a comedy derived from Aristophanes' battle of the sexes Lysistrata. was co- written and directed by Ray Whelan of Toronto. Duels and Doorbells, a set of three drawing room comedies, examined the battles between the sexes at the turn of the century. Ugly. Absurd and Perverse consisted of three very different plays ranging from a fairy tale done in masks to David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago. Each play presented a serious human problem in a humorous manner. Audiences entered the Rotunda Theatre to see The Real Inspector Hound only to find themselves 'backstage.' The spoof of The Mousetrap complete with bad acting' and verbose critics, left the audience wondering who is Higgs? The company also reached a great number of students through performances in the ceilidh and unusual promotion stunts. 119 Sharp intellectual games between characters constitute the plot of Harold Pinter's The Collection. Performed during Frosh Week, it was the student body's first chance to see an example of what the drama department has to offer. 120 A FREEDOM OF THE CITY Three totally different people emerge from the rioting to find themselves in the mayor's parlor of the Guildhall in the city of Derry. Freedom of the City. by Brian Friel, takes a glimpse at the problems and conflicts in Irish society today. Lily, Micheal and Skinner are isolated in the parlor while all around soldiers, reporters and officials await the arrival of the terrorists on the steps of the Guildhall. The violent deaths of the characters and the en- suing trial put the problem into a different perspective. It gives us something to think about. y 121 (Etarptan The church has always played some role in the dramatic theatre. It could either be a condemning force or a supportive one. Everyman, a morality play, was tackled by the drama department in March. In addition to the usual performances in Convocation Hall, four performances were done in St. Mary's and St. George's Cathedrals. Characters such as Kindred and Beauty, were dressed to the hilt in modern costumes created by the Toronto designer Maxine Graham. It was a difficult task to adapt the play for the modern audience but the placement of the play within a cocktail party setting made the message clearer. Death can come to anyone, anytime. 122 V. Commedia dell'arte has its origins in the seventeenth century when travelling troups would perform plays without set scripts. Improvisation and slapstick were used in the production of The Three Cuckolds. The plot revolves around three couples who desire partners other than their own spouses. The production was performed for audiences in the Rotunda, the Ceilidh and the community-at-large. Darrow is a one-man play concerning the life of Clarence Darrow. The American lawyer is best known for his defense during the well-publicized Monkey Trial. For the most part Darrow fought for the underdog: he was a prominent human rights activist. Fred Euringer. a professor and head of the Drama Department, repeated his performances for appreciative audiences. DARROW 1 123 For the first time ever, students in resident put on their own full-length play. It wasn't just a play but a musical called A Midwinter Fantasy. The play, set in a mythical university called King's College, parallelled situations that could happen to many Queen's students at one time or another. The cast and crew should be commended for the time and energy put into this new project. 124 o m Scapino. based on a play written by Moliere and drawn from the genre of commedia dell'arte, was produced by McArthur students in November. The action revolves around the typical themes of love and money. Two young men want to marry two penniless girls but their fathers object. Enter Scapino, a trickster, who attempts to aid the young couples and the result is a night full of laughter and slapstick. Queens Players has come up with a successful formula - cabaret plus Clark Hall plus a good following have resulted in a good year. The players per- formed two cabarets. Ar- mageddon and Eros by Any Other Name, to packed houses. Both presentations included the energy, singing, dancing and little bit of raunchiness enjoyed by Queen’s audiences. neen Players 126 GUYS AND DOLLS I got the horse right here ■his name is Paul Revere . . . From the very first song one realizes that gambling plays a major role in Guys and Dolls, the Queen s Musical Theatre production this year. Sky Masterson believes he can pick up any doll he wants so Nathan Detroit wagers a bet with Sky. He must take Sister Sarah of the Save-a-Soul Mission to Havana for a lunch date. Love, dice and the police complicate the lives of these Damon Runyon characters but all ends happily once Sarah and Adelaide, Nathan's long-time fiancee, decide to gamble and Marry the Man Today. 127 All That Jazz Callet Reading Bndeshead Revisited - Evelyn Waugh The Cardinal Sins - Andrew Greeley Any Garfield Book - Jim Davis God Emperor of Dune - Frank Herbert Gorky Park - Martin Cruz Smith In the Bely of the Beast - Jack Abbott The Lord God Made Them All - James Herriot Officers' Wives - Thomas Fleming Richard Simmons' Never-Say-Diet Book - Richard Simmons The White Hotel - D.M. The purpose of the campaign was to increase student involvement - especially students who had not previously had the opportunity to get involved . . . Upper year students might recall that after some hassling Outer Council sent a congratulatory note to Chuck and Di. In June Buckingham Palace mailed the AMS a thank you letter ... In August the Ontario Rent Review Board upheld a ruling that AMS housing is classified as University residences and is thus exempt from rent controls. In the spring of '82 the AMS announced that they were getting out of the housing market . . . The Journal attempted to incorporate, to break from the AMS, in order to gain control over their own finances and content but to no avail as of yet . . . In March the AMS court found that the '81-'82 AMS executive was a perpetual, insistent and grossly negligent failure especially in following guidelines set out in the constitution . . . The AMS was also plagued with some infighting including a few letters in the Journal condemning one another. NOTES ABOUT YOUR AMS 134 Twenty bills were debated at this year's Model Parliament including one that proposed four new national holidays to be devoted to street parties - Frosh Week. Hallowe'en, the Saturday nearest February 10 (Sir John A's worst alcoholic bout in Parliament), and the Friday nearest April 30 (Maggie and Pierre's breakup). A crown corporation would be established to allow people to travel across the country to party, thus helping to improve national unity. Not everything was so light; amongst the more serious discussions was a bill to legalize marijuana. It was defeated. Several guest speakers made an appearance: Kingston mayor John Gerretson, Prof. C.E.S. Franks of the Politics Department and Federal Judge (and once speaker of the House of Com- mons) James Jerome. A new home for the old Once it was called the New Medical building and it housed the dept, of Microbiology . . . now it is called Kathleen Ryan Hall and houses the Archives. The building was fully renovated using money from Queen's Quest and the Kathleen Ryan Foun- dation. The moving of the Archives was quite a job in itself; 7 summer students took 6 weeks. 139 concrete and steel With 50% of the necessary funds coming from the Ontario Heritage Fund, $190,000 was spent on renovations to Summerhill . . . the residence of the Principal. It also houses the nursing faculty which will be moving into the newly fixed up Cataraqui building at the corner of Barrie and Deacon streets. The Alumni Association plans to move into Summerhill once the nurses vacate the premises. Although Golden Words claimed that the addition to Fleming Hall annex would house the new Michener Pub, in reality the new facilities include library and lab space as well as offices. The plans to expand the Electrical Engineering building by 3 floors have been on the books for 2 years. 140 Last August Laura Gill (B.A. '74, Queen's) was hired as the new assistant to the Dean of Women. This year marked the 140th anniversary of the granting of Queen's Royal Charter by Queen Victoria. The second floor of the north Morris Hall was flooded as the result of a prank - water was left running in toilet paper clogged sinks. Two alumni were suspected but nothing could be done. On October 6th Douglas Library received a bomb threat. Over 100 students had to be evacuated as a consequence ... a process that took about 7 minutes. Members of the Kingston Police and Fire departments searched the reserve room but found nothing. An hour later students were readmitted. 142 Studyin' v day or . . The purpose of this day was to try to make students and the public aware of the government cuts in post-secondary education spending. Between 75 and 100 students spent the night. At 10:30 the next morning various speakers addressed interested students on the steps of Douglas: Flora Mac- Donald, Principal Watts, OFS and AMS reps., and Mayor John Gerretson. The library staff remained on duty. 143 In .1 speech on El Salvador given to a group of students Flora MacDonald (below) told us that we should become more concerned with and involved in the world around us. The second annual Conference on Human Rights and Social Responsibility was divided into three sections: Friday was spent on International issues, Saturday on Canadian, and Sunday on local. Each day there were workshops, films and discussions. The keynote speaker this year was John Mohawk. A group of students and Kingston residents joined in a rally in Ottawa protesting the American involvement in El Salvador. Hugh McCullum. editor of the United Church Observer, condemned American involvement in El Salvador in a speech this spring. He blames Reagan's right wing ideology for US policies in Central America. The Canadian government also came under fire for their complicity . for sitting by (and for supporting the Americans) while torture and political assassination continue in almost Holocaust proportions. 144 Tricolour Awards This year's Tricolour Award winners were Jeremy Freedman (below), Susan King and Dan Shire (very bottom). Estimates of the numbers participating in this street party vary from 1,200 in the Journal to Police Chief Rice's claim that 3,000 people were there at the peak of the party (1:30 a.m.). Five police units watched the proceedings after closing the street to traffic at 10:00 p.m. In the end almost twenty people (NOT all Queen's students) were charged with various things. . This illegal act sparked quite a bit of controversy. At a general meeting of the Sydenham Ward Tenants and Ratepayers Association, Deputy Police Chief Hackett called for the abolishment of both Orientation Week and Homecoming. Mrs. Ruth Bryson, deputy chairman of the Association agreed . . . saying that the can- cellation of Orientation Week was necessary to stop the mob mentality of rich upper class preppies. Rumours of a Hallowe'en street party were circulated by the Whig Standard but all they did was increase the tension. The administration. Senate, and Board of Trustees condemned the street party. Since the University has no legal control over the off-campus activities of their students, other actions were taken. Principal Watts wrote an open letter that not only appeared in the Journal but also was sent to some undergrads. He asked for restraint and responsibility. A special Senate committee was established to investigate the street party and to make recommendations about future measures to improve student-city relations. This committee is chaired by Dean Sinclair and 3 of its 7 members are students. Its interim report finally appeared in early April and it contained two recommendations . . . first, participation in street parties constitutes an offence against the University's published code of conduct and second, in future voids' in the scheduling of events for orientation and homecoming be filled with some on- campus activities with the AMS and orientation committees to be asked to do this. Kingston City Council also had a committee looking into the situation. Their belief is that street parties are a symptom of a deeper discontent and that the root of the problem lies with the condition of student housing. The most recent idea comes from the Office of the Dean of Women . . . that a buddy system' be instituted whereby members of the Kingston community be in- vited to join Gael groups during Orientation Week. 149 150 There were three speakers on campus this year that warrant mention. First, the inaugural Michener Visitor was Dr. Larkin Kerwin who is the president of the National Research Council of Canada. His public speech was entitled. Les Arpents de neige in springtime - the evolution of francophone Canada.' Another inaugural speaker was Prof. Raymond Lemieux of the Dept, of Chemistry at the University of Alberta. He was brought to Queen's under the auspices of the JKN Jones Visitorship. Considering the fact that Dr. Lemieux has focused his recent research on synthetic antigens and their importance in blood typing and in the treatment of leukemia and hemophilia, it is fitting that he spoke on Applications of synthetic oligosaccharides as antigenic deter- minants.' 4k This year's Brockington Visitor was Canadian artist Alex Colville who gave two public lectures. The first included the showing of many of his works while the second was a description of how a painting progresses from original idea to end product. The Agnes Etherington Centre displayed some of his prints. 151 SEPT. 26 1 gfG Moke the son shine for The annual pancake dinner held in Leonard Cafeteria raised Si000 for United Way this year. Douglas Ross of London, Ont., close to $200,000 of their 1 million dollar target has been reached by May 82. Not bad for 7 months work . . . work that the students have participated in by travelling to area churches (mostly Presbyterian and United). 153 It was Budget Day, Nov. 12, and Finance Minister MacEachen announced a budget that was supposedly designed to get the rich’ by closing a series of tax loopholes. All it did was squeeze the middle class and small businessman even tighter. Some changes were made but during the spring it was evident that not all federal Liberals were in agreement with the govern- ment's economic policies. Canada's metric conversion continued - in January all stores were legally obligated to convert to grams and kilograms but some owners have kicked up a fuss because of the costs involved. They have not been alone. Neil Fraser, a Kingston resident who worked for the tax department, was fired from his job because he criticized the government's metric policy. Just months after the Federal government s energy agreement with Alberta, there was an oil glut around the world. Still, prices at the gas pumps rose to more than 40 4 a litre. As in every country, Canada ex- perienced economic difficulties. Layoffs in most in- dustries. oil and gas, mining and construction, as well as manufacturing, hurt most communities. Only two airlines in North America made money: Air Canada and Delta Airlines. This was also the year that Sir Freddie Laker and his discount, no-frills airline went bankrupt. On the bright side, Canada celebrated with Steve Podborski after his World Cup downhill victory. In mid-April, the Terry Fox 30 t stamp was issued to commemorate his courageous attempt to run across Canada. On April 17th Queen Elizabeth brought the Canada Bill, the Canadian Constitution, to Ottawa amidst government media campaigns. Several charters were available to the celebrations in Ottawa from Kingston for $18.67. The ceremony was held outside (in the rain) to maximize audience size and minimize government infighting. A provincial election in Saskatchewan saw the in- troduction of the Western Concept Coalition party. The biggest surprise in that election is that the Conservatives captured a majority from Allan Blakeney and his NDP party. The Guardian Angels announced that they would start working in Windsor later in 1982. Jean Harris was convicted of murdering Dr. Herman Tarnower (of the Scarsdale Diet) and was given 15 years in prison. Closer to home, Susan Nelles had the charge of murdering 4 babies at the Hospital for Sick Children dropped, after 14 months, on the grounds that not only did the prosecution not have enough evidence but also that there was overwhelming evidence that she could not possibly have done it. There is now talk that the province will investigate 43 suspicious infant deaths at the hospital. Terri Shields lost her legal battle to have publication of nude photos of daughter Brooke (at six years old) banned. Hmmm . . . In June of '81 Israel raided an Iraqi nuclear reactor. Consequently, the US temporarily suspended delivery of a promised F16 fighter. The Israelis evacuated the Sinai to fulfill the Camp David Accord, an evacuation that saw Israelis fighting Israelis. At the same time, Israel annexed the Golan Heights. Although the UN Security Council declared the annexation null and void and despite Arab protestations and resistance, the Israelis remain. On Easter Sunday an American born private in the Israeli army went wild with a machine gun in a Moslem mosque. This outburst appeared to be the impetus for riots by Arabs on the following days. There were also problems on the West Bank after the Israelis dismissed an Arab mayor and his whole town council. A relief from troubled economic times in Britain was provided by the Royal family as the whole world tuned in to watch Prince Charles marry Lady Diana Spencer. Perhaps you dragged yourself out of bed at some ghastly hour in the early morning to watch the pageantry. What started out as a botched up Si.6 million Brinks robbery in New York, turned into the beginnings of a roundup of members from various radical underground groups: the Weather Underground, Black Liberation Army, May 19th coalition and the Republic of New Africa. These American groups were all believed to be dormant. In Poland, the autumn saw Solidarity walkouts to protest food shortages and harassment of Solidarity union members. General Wojciech Jaruzelski replaced Stanislaw Kania as premier of Poland in November. He quickly denounced the strikes, sending troops throughout the country and threatening martial law if they did not end. This threat was carried out a month later as curfews were imposed and Solidarity members were jailed. Solidarity leader Lech Walesa was placed under house arrest in a villa in Otwock, just southeast of Warsaw and has resisted offers of freedom if he and his family leave the country. A 250 foot Soviet Whiskey class patrol submarine ran aground on Sweden's southeast coast, 9 miles from Sweden’s Karlskrona naval base. The Russian captain of the sub, Pyotr Gushin, blamed the accident on an error in navigation. Ten more Soviet ships waited just outside Sweden's territorial boundaries as they wanted to salvage their own sub. The Russian ambassador apologized for the incident. The second Columbia flight occurred early in November. This was also the maiden voyage and successful debut of the $100 million Canadian built mechanical arm. The third successful trip for the space shuttle took place in the spring with only one minor hitch - rainy weather had caused flooding of California's Edwards Air Force Base so the landing had to be moved to Nevada. 154 It was an election plagued with problems. El Salvador's leftist guerrillas disrupted them and leftist supporters boycotted them. Still, on Mar. 28th 80% of the population voted under the watchful eye of ob- servers from many countries. Duarte, the pre-election president, and his Christian Democrat party claimed 24 out of 60 seats. The other 5 parties, all rightist, formed a coalition, the Nationalist Republican Alliance under the leadership of National Guard officer Roberto d'Aubuisson. As Egyptian president Anwar Sadat sat watching a military display, soldiers, and men dressed like soldiers, broke from the parade and shot him dead. In April 5 of his murderers were executed. After 15 years of futile negotiations. Argentina in- vaded the British controlled Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, and the South Sandwich Islands. The Americans. UN. and Peruvians tried to solve the crisis with diplomacy as the British Navy drew nearer to the islands. Once the British had reclaimed the minor islands they turned their attention to the Falklands. At the time of publication, the British had established a base at Port San Carlos although the Argentinians continued to resist invasion. In the spring of '82, Kingston's sludge (the stuff left over from the treatment of raw sewage) was found to have a high mercury content. An investigation disclosed that Queen s was one of the major contributors to this problem. Last summer, VIA Rail, known for its late trains, cancelled the Kingston Turbo stop but public outcry forced reopening shortly afterwards. LRC (light, rapid, comfortable) trains were introduced to the Toronto- Montreal line after a short delay caused by mechanical problems. Late trains still persist. 155 156 r What does the news section mean to you? When you finally read this section twenty years down the road what do you want to find here? You can read all the AMS election issues and promises in your 4 yearbooks (if you picked them all up!) and they will probably all sound identical. Student apathy will keep reappearing; this is not the first year that parties are more important than politics . . . and it most likely is not the last. From year to year the only things that really change are the individual faces of the thousands of students that make this place what it is. This, and the next, spread is devoted to some of these faces. It may not be what you were expecting here. 157 159 SPORTS GOLF r Queen's golfers did well this year, repeating last year's win at the Waterloo University Invitational and maintaining their standings in the OUAA with a third place finish. Jamie Heward and Lee Jackson tied for fourth place in the finals of individual play. Other team members contributing to Queen's success were Bill Leacy, Greg Lloyd and Mark Stevenson. Thanks go to the team's coach, Jake Edwards. V RUGBY The first team lost a hard fought match to U of T in the OUAA finals. With a regular season record of 7 wins. 1 loss, the firsts performed much better than expected due to a good combination of veterans and rookies. During the season, the team recorded their 100th all-time victory, to lead all OUAA teams. The second team won their championship at the finals in Toronto for the second year in a row. The successful tradition of both teams should continue next year with the usual insurgence of excellent rookies. Ralph Jarchaw was very successful in his second and final year of coaching and he will be missed next year. Fred Garrell was the rookie of the year and Rob Nairn was the MVP. Jim Stone earned a Special Merit award for his five years of outstanding performance. 163 ROWING The rowing season finished with the Women's Varsity team placing second and the Men’s Varsity team placing third at the OUAA-OWIAA's. The Women's Junior Varsity and Novice teams both finished second while the respective men's teams did not do as well. The six week season was judged a success by both crews and coaches, and the rowers eagerly look forward to next season. TENNIS The team of Matthew O'Gorman, John Corelli, Jeremy Walker, Bill Tsapralis, and Darren Alcock solidified their position as one of the top three teams in Ontario. Their perennial rival, U of T, earned top honours again this year, but their edge over the Gaels has been dramatically reduced recently. Thanks go to coach John MacFarlane for his time, and the team s only departing member. Bill Tspralis for his great tennis and special contribution to the fine team spirit. V_________________________________________ 164 J FIELD HOCKEY This year's team fared well in Tier 2 season play. The success of their season hinged on their final game in the OW's, against Waterloo. That true Queen's spirit shone through as they pulled out a 1-0 overtime victory, thus achieving their goal of advancing to Tier 1 for next year. Well done! SOCCER This was a rebuilding year for the Gaels. Although the majority of last year's team was lost to graduation, the youthful team played well for most of the season and displayed such highlights as a four game win streak and an undefeated record against the league's top three teams. Early losses and inconsistency eliminated the Gaels from playoff action, but prospects are promising for next year. The only non-returning team members are outstanding veterans Wally Klus and captain Kevin Curtis. ARCHERY Congratulations Patti Walker. The graduating veteran of the archery team had high score on the final day of com- petition, defeating U of T's favoured ace. Patti's effort, along with the hard work of Gail Mumford, Jill Dodds. Jenny Walker, and Cynthia Clark, resulted in a strong third place team finish. Coach Keith Kiell anticipates continued success. y 167 CROSS-COUNTRY The women's cross-country season was dominated by good times, good people and Anne-Marie! Not only did Anne Marie Malone win the OWIAA and C1AU championships, but went on to run in Rome, Italy in the World Cross-Country meet. Back at the home front . . . the rest of the team had a good season - placing third at the OWIAA championships. More importantly - the girls had a great time. Cheers Curt! For the second time in three years, the men's cross- country team was victorious, winning both the OUAA and CIAU titles. The team of Alan Hugh, Hugh Tafel, Rick Lee, Kevin Mackinnon, Dan Deforge, Lou Areias and Ed Ireland placed six runners in the top 20 at the CIAU's. Alan Hugh, second at the OU's, was seventh in the CIAU's. Hugh Tafel, captain of the team, capped a successful career, by winning the Jack Jarvis Trophy. 168 TRACK AND FIELD •' 1; The track seasons were highlighted by outstanding individual achievements, as well as solid team performances. In outdoor action, the women's team placed second while the men placed fourth. Team strength was also displayed in the indoor season, in which 13 team members went to the C1AU indoor championships at Universite Laval. In the finals Melody Tercolacci once again proved her superiority by winning the shot with a record throw. The 4x800m relay team of Ed Ireland, Brian Murat, Richard Lee, and Jim Mihell got the silver medal and Ann Marie Malone placed third in the 3000m run. 169 170 FOOTBALL After a slow start, the Gaels pulled together and with hard work and excellent coaching won the league championship for the fourth time in six years. The OQIFC final against McGill was the highlight of the season. The Gaels were losing 13-1 at half-time and rallying late in the second half they played an exciting game to win 26-19. At the Atlantic Bowl the next week, the Gaels lost a hard fought battle to the Acadia Axemen, who went on to win the College Bowl. OQIFC stars were Larry Mohr. Bob Bronk, Rob Ball and Tom McCartney, who was also selected for the All-Canadian team. 171 FIGURE SKATING The Queen's figure skating team nearly did it! They lost the Ontario championship to Western by one point. Sue Squires won the Novice Ladies Solo division, while Vivian Hisey was a double winner, cap- turing the Junior Ladies Solo and Interpretation titles. 174 GAL'S HOCKEY The girls did not do as well as they'd hoped. They placed fifth in the OWIAA standings, but their battle with Guelph for fourth led to exciting weekends of hockey. Coach Janean Sergeant plans on being around a few more years and she expects to build a winning team again shortly. r-------------------- CURLING The rink skipped by Sheryl Keely- Dobenko did quite well this year, winning the OWIAA championship in dramatic fashion. After losing the first game of the double elimination tournament, the rink fought back to sweep the remaining games and the Ontario title. The men, coached by Al Lenard, placed fourth in the east. V____________________ 175 SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING This year, I he OVVIAA championships were held at Queen s. The home town fans were not disappointed as the girls came away with their 10th championship in eleven years. It was a perfect ending to a perfect season. Queen's won at Toronto and even broke the record for total points at the McGill meet. At the OW's, the team was led by Carolyn Ellis who won all three events she entered, and Laura Anderson, who won in two events and came second in another. Queen's also won the team event. WATER POLO The water polo team was very young, fast and varied in previous experience, but in all exhibition tour- naments throughout and after the season, the blend produced excellent results. However, during the OUAA scheduled games, more experienced tea...- overcame the Gaels by forcing the team to make mistakes in their important games. The play of the Queen's team became more coherent as the season continued and actually climaxed after the OUAA schedule. At the Ottawa Invitational tournament the Gaels placed third just behind Carleton and York, the '81 '82 OUAA champions. The team will certainly continue to mature and since none of the players are graduating, another very successful year should ensue with an improved league standing. SWIMMING AND DIVING Overall, the swimming and diving teams enjoyed a successful year. The women placed 3rd in the OWIAA standings; an improvement from last year's 6th place. The team was lead by diver Cynthia McColl who won the silver medal in both the 1 and 3 metre events. The men finished a respectable fifth in their division. Queens was well represented at the ClAU's held in Vancouver. Cynthia McColl and Ken Bravo represented the divers while the women's swim team sent Shona MacLachlan, Judy McCaffrey, Mary Humphries, Heather Darlington, Julaine Tillermann and Joanne Jardin. Steve Read, Jack Raleigh and Dave Wood represented the men's swim team. Coach Mike Gurgol deserves mention for hard work, dedication, and motivating the team. The team's achievements and improvements during his two years as coach demonstrate his coaching talent. He accepted a job as head coach of a Vancouver swim team shortly after termination of his duties at Queen's. Best of luck, Mike! tr ' 178 VOLLEYBALL After a slow start, the men's volleyball team finished playing their best ball of the year. In the divisional playoffs, the team was defeated by York, the eventual OUAA champions. This year, coach Ginny Crozier, the 1981 eastern coach-of- the-year, was assisted by former OUAA all-star Henk Meijer. Unfortunately for the women, a hectic schedule of 9 matches in 11 days caused them to finish 5th and miss the playoffs. But, under the direction of coach Donna Gallagher, they did have some success, as they won the tournament in Ot- tawa. ■BADMINTON This year's strong women's Badminton team won their third OWIAA championship. Next year looks to be a year of rebuilding, but the team has confidence in its strong core of talent and experience to put the team in contention for another championship. With only three of its members returning, it was difficult to predict how the men's Badminton team would fare. However, with the excellent new talent, the team finished the first half of the season in second place. Due to some unfortunate losses in the last tournament of the year, the team tied for second, but was out of the finals on account of their win-loss record. y WOMEN'S BASKETBALL MEN'S BASKETBALL The basketball Gaels started the season with their most successful exhibition games in many years, ac- cumulating a record of 11 wins and 5 losses. After a month off at Christmas the Gaels returned for a disappointing regular season. Inconsistency and defensive problems were partially responsible for the Gaels finishing out of the playoffs. The Gaels overall record was 14-14. The highlight of the year was the Cheer for Beer game against the University of Toronto in which 2.000 fans packed Bartlett Gym, the most fans at a Queen's game in many years. Under the guidance of the new coaches, Dave Wilson and Liz Nellis, the women's basketball team ended their 5-7 season by making the playoffs for the first time in years. Unfortunately, in the playoffs the Gaels were eliminated in the first round by U of T. Despite a disappointing end to what was an up and down season, the team should be strong in '83. All twelve members are eligible for play next year. 180 MEN'S HOCKEY Although the Gaels failed to capture the OUAA championship two years running, they fared well this season. They ended the year with a record of 13-7-2. Davidson and Stothart were both named to the All- Canadian team and Stothart was again named player of the year by the ClAU. Gael fans were con- sistently impressed by fine hockey, especially against U of T. 182 183 HISTORIC HOCKEY Historic Hockey was created in 1969 as a feature of the Kingston Winter Carnival. It has continued as a part of the carnival since. The present series involves teams from Queen s. RMC, and the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery Brigade Association (RCHA), and is sponsored by the International Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum. The game is played with the rules and equipment that were used in the first organized game of hockey. That game was played on Kingston harbour ice in 1686 between Queen's and RMC. Some interesting features of the original game include the use of a square puck, seven players to a team and goal posts that are frozen into the ice. For the third consecutive year. Queen's won the series. Queen s defeated RMC 2-0. and clinched the title with a 1-0 victory over the RCHA Regiment from Petawawa in the series finale. 184 FENCING Queen's was represented by two members of the men s team at the OU's held in Windsor. Jean Denis finished ninth in foil despite having his hand slashed. Scott Martell finished eleventh in sabre. The women also had a rough time as they had to fight their opponents, the weather and some untimely in- juries. In the end. a strong team effort overcame all the hard luck and enabled the team to finish in a tie for fourth place. SQUASH After capturing second in the OWIAA finals, the women s squash team made up for it by winning the overall trophy at the Can-Am championships. Leading the Gaels to victory was Gail Lepore with four victories, while Leah Ann Wright and Jean-Ann Naysmith each won 3 of 4 matches. The Men's squash team ended the season at fourth in the OUAA finals. 185 ALPINE SKIING V The men's and women's Alpine Ski Teams had their best season ever, finishing well ahead of the league s other nine university teams. The two Queen's teams each went on to win the overall titles at the Can-Am Final in Bromont, Quebec. The season s successes can be attributed to the depth on both teams and the strength and discipline the racers displayed all season. Kurt Ritcey placed second overall in the league, while David Beatty placed third in his final year of racing at Queen s. Other graduates include Nancy First- brook and Nancy Esson, who placed third and fifth respectively. Other highlights include David Richardson's fourth place league finish and a second place for rookie Coosje Weber in women's competition. In spite of the loss of strong team members, next year's team depth makes prospects good for a repeat of this season's cham- pionships. r NORDIC SKIING The men s team moved one step closer to the OUAA Championship, finishing second behind a powerful Laurentian squad, after finishing third last year. Team veterans Peter Stymiest and Doug Brown led the team and earned them- selves a trip to the Shell Cup National Races in Edmonton. Other standouts were rookie Mark Totten and Mike Vasila who both won at Udora. Finishing a close third at the Queen's hosted OWIAA's, the women's team demonstrated their strength and speed. Chris Bowlby and Barb Olmsted con- sistently led the team, while newcomers Katherine Wheatley and Cheryl Lyte added to the depth that should make next year's team equally successful. The especially good news is that the team will be losing no members next year. Ex- ceptionally strong performances were turned in by Terry Cartwright, rookie Gerry Chaput, and Roydon Fraser, who wrestled at the Canadian Championships. 188 GYMNASTICS Though both men's and women's teams were plagued by sickness and injuries, the teams pulled together to display some bright spots. The men's team placed a respectable third at the O.U.A. A.'s and a ninth at the C.I.A.U.'s in Winnipeg. This surpassed their thir- teenth place finish at last year's competition. The women did not fare as well. Unfortunately, no one on the team qualified for the nationals in Winnipeg. 189 COLOUR NIGHT Colour night proved to be as vibrant and lighthearted as has become expected. After a film presentation about Queen's sports. Principal Watts spoke on the importance of a wide degree of participation in athletics, and on our distinctive spirit, both in victory and defeat. Then, all-Canadian star, Ron Davidson, replied on behalf of all athletes. Highlights of the evening included the presentation of the Jenkins Trophy to Paul Stothart (ABOVE), the PHE '55 Trophy to Nancy Firstbrook (MIDDLE RIGHT), the Jack Jarvis Trophy to Hugh Tafel and Dave Beatty (TOP RIGHT). the Award of Merit to Lori Goodfellow, the Alfie Pierce Trophy to Jane Anne Forrest and Scott Bissessar (BOTTOM RIGHT), and the Marion Ross Trophy to Chris Bowlby (TOP LEFT). 190 191 GRADS Neil Blake, Ph.D. Mctallurgic.il Engineering Jon G.
