tricolor 77 Published by the Alma Mater Society ot Queei University, Inc., Kingston, Ontario We are an enigma to much of the world. Most people cannot comprehend why we would pay to continue our schooling. They remind us about the hidden opportunity cost and the obvious tuition and residence fees which rise in spite of our protests. They laugh at our degree which can no longer be exchanged for a prestigious job And yet we stay here. They label us as virtually illiterate. They condemn us for having a liberal arts education which is too broad to be of any use and, in the same breath, deride us for being too specialized. They tell us our education is wasted unless we can do something with it, preferably convert the diploma into a suitable number of dollars per year. We are university students. They are society's critics. One subset of the younger generation, we are the educated younger generation. Remember? The hope of the future and the leaders of tomorrow. That's us. We are expected to plan our lives, or at least put a semblance of order into them while we are here. That expectation does not sound unreasonable until we actually try it. Ordering one's life necessarily implies eliminating some options. That can be a painful, limiting process at a time when we are told that the universe awaits our commands. We say that we think of ourselves as adults, but we are amazed when clerks call us Madam or Sir. We think of our friends as kids. When we appear in stockings and a dress or a shirt and tie, we are out of place. We are an order of young people; our habit, blue jeans and work boots. Even without a provincial or national organization representing our best interests to the appropriate government, we would still be a distinctive group. When one of us is successful, it is a victory for all. And when one of us behaves foolishly, the shame is shared by the community of students. We strain towards adulthood and acceptable modes of behaviour. Yet, we rebel against the mold we see laid out for us. We want answers, and have to settle for living in tension. T We live from dilemma to dilemma. Ph.D. ORAL THESIS EXAMINATIONS All members of the regular academic staff of the University! may attend the Ph.D. examinations. The books in the library on that topic have been stolen years ago by impatient un- dergrads. If the book is still available, the pertinent sec- tion is so well underlined, that it is nearly impossible to read. For the cosmo- politan undergrad, however, there is the consolation of learned books on most topics in German and French. We all suffer at some time from professors who prefer to talk to the blackboards and eat the chalk instead of addressing the class. Their scholarship may be impecca- ble, but they are not all blessed with the ability to profess their philosophy ver- bally. When we experience a prof who is so wrapped up in his own study that he is happy to abandon the world around him, we begin to understand the rele- vance of the term, “ivory tower. In first year, they are intimidating intellectuals; by fourth year, they are human beings, quite fallible. The students of the sixties fought for a different life style for students. They demonstrated for representation on university decision-making bodies. They pleaded for a format for classes different from the lecture. The students wanted to participate in the classroom and generate discussion. The result is the seminar, a forum for student participation in the teaching process. We each find our own topic fascinating and don't understand why fellow students must make an effort to stay awake while several handwritten pages of notes are read in that timorous monotone peculiar to undergrads presenting their ideas to their profs and classmates. We are seldom better at teaching than the people who are paid to do it. Finding a place to live, keeping it habitable, and getting along with the people who live there can be as trying as the academic side of university. Many of us move each year, thereby putting ourselves through the chore of moving on the same weekend when the entire Canadian student populace moves. After a year or more of residence life, most of us are eager to cook for ourselves instead of being fed, to live in a home instead of a room, and to live with a manageable number of people rather than a battalion of students. Eager to live close to campus, many students are forced to pay high rent for low quality housing in the area immediately surrounding the university. Landlords develop reputations for being villains, greedy and uncooperative. Perhaps, the happy reminiscences are of the unparal- leled growth: spiritual, social and intellectual growth. It is a time of great excitement, for our curiosity is being satiated. Bits of knowledge, impressions and theories are fitted together. The world becomes more manageable, more understandable. The joy of fitting together two formerly incompatible ideas is a joy that is indescribable to one who is obsessed with the costs of university education. No price can be affixed to those sweeping, first-year courses that encompass great expanses of time and space and bring the world into our grasp. he excitement is over the activity in our minds and hearts. University is an eternal ipring — new ideas are planted in an atmosphere designed to encourage their growth. Ve are free here as we are in no other place. The freedom is not complete, for survival it university, as elsewhere, implies struggle. But the struggle is to create, not merely o maintain or to destroy. The joys of university are the joys of the discovery of the vorld and the place of the self in that world. ■ i v :t , 'V V ■ i. ‘ •, « . 4 The1 growth, whether paintul or joyous, is worthwhile. One hundred and fifty first-year engineers spent one afternoon helping to construct a breakwater to protect the beach at Lake Ontario Park. The cost of con- structing the breakwater prohibited the Department of Parks and Recrea- tion from undertaking the project themselves. The volunteer '80 engin- eers are the second group of engin- eering frosh to work on the break- water. More than 1500 frosh participated in Charity Day, shining shoes for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Other students collected litter from Kingston streets and performed small tasks as “slaves of Kingston residents. Their earnings were contributed to Amnesty International and Camp Outlook. This year's freshman class was in- troduced to the University by Mike MacMillan's film, The Academic Cloister”. The film, created by Queen's film students, is not an advertisement for Queen's. Rather than focusing on the frivolous aspects of university life, The Academic Cloister concentrates on classes, the learning process and intellectual stimulation, or the lack of it, at Queen's. The film provoked at least a few moments of thought and dis- cussion about the purpose of post- secondary education in an otherwise fun-filled Frosh Week. Frosh Week parlies resulted in one major accident in 1976. Ai a parly on Division Streel, a fourth-year student suffered a fractured skull after being struck by a pickup truck. The student was released from hospital a few days after the accident; the driver of the truck was charged with failure to remain at the scene of the accident. In the tall social season at Queen's, the premiere event was, without doubt, the opening of the new pub in the |ohn Deutsch University Centre. The Underground, as it was named in a student contest, is a spacious pub with a capacity of 400. Yet, the lineups began on Friday and Saturday nights before seven and often extended down to Union Street. According to a study conducted by Queen's English Professor Colin Norman, over seventy per cent of first-year Arts and Science students write less than adequately. Of these, thirty-seven per cent were judged to have the potential for improvement. The much-publicized report dis- turbed many Queen's students who doubted the reliability of the report because its results were based on an assessment of final examinations. A little-mentioned aspect of the report was the finding that seventy-five per cent of the fourth- year students were judged to have written impressively, and in a manner that marked no decline over past years. Close on the heels of the issue of The Queen's English report came the recommendation to the Arts and Science Faculty Board that university entrance examinations be established on a province-wide basis. The major construction project at Queen's this year was the renovation of Ontario Hall. Built for $75,000 in 1902, the former home of the Geography Department is considered an important example of the Roman- esque Revival style of architecture. The remodeled Ontario Hall, ex- pected to cost $800,000, will provide a new home for the Department of Art. 3VU 01 Caroline Bird, an American author, staled her Case Against College in October as part of the campaign to make students aware of their status as students. Ms. Bird advised students that college is a bad financial invest- ment, an investment often made on the false assumption that its return will be a high-paying job. She recom- mended an apprentice system to train high school graduates for jobs as an alternative to post-secondary educa- tion. Two hundred members of the Queen's community-students,facuUy members and library technicians - joined the October 14th National Day of Protest organized by the Canadian Labour Congress to demonstrate labour's opposition to wage and price controls. The Queen's people started their rally in front of Douglas Library and marched to Confederation Park to join Kingston workers assembled there. The Alma Mater Society denied the protest support when a motion on the subject was brought before Outer Council in September. Their position was maintained in the face of the full support accorded the protest by the National Union of Students (NUS). John Kenneth Galbraith visited Queen's in October as the Brocking- ton Visitor. Unfortunately, his visit was cut short by a call for his help on Jimmy Carter's campaign. The Canadian-born Harvard educator addressed a capacity audi- ence in Grant Hall. He spoke of the desire of most economists to see their discipline as a science, the material of which is static. Galbraith protested that the institutions with which economics deals change, making the last generation's economic obso- lete. Galbraith advised his audience to abandon the present myths and accept what really exists. Since 1889, the Levana Society has greeted women new to Queen's with the Candlelighting ceremony, a recognition of the academic chal- lenges that lace us , according to Dean Evelyn Reid. Dr. Naomi Grif- fiths. Associate Dean of Arts at Carle- ton University, addressed the women. She cautioned her audience to re- member that women are human first, and women second, Dr. Griffiths warned them against becoming too solemn about their roles in life. The flame of knowledge and friendship was passed to each woman's candle and a pledge of loyalty to the Queen's spirit was taken. i On November 9, Queen's students took part in a nation-wide critical examination called National Student Day. Unlike most exams, there were no correct answers; there was no time limit imposed tor finishing the lest. The examination was of ourselves, of our duties and rights as students in society. Screenings of The Academic Cloister , workshops and an evening forum served to stimulate thought and discussion on the subject. The successor to Bruce Trotter, Rector of Queen's from 1974 to 1976, was chosen by the students in November. Moe Chochla, a second-year law student and a gradu- ate of Applied Science at Queen's, won the election over Tony Pepper, a fourth-year English and History student. Chochla has gained a famil- iarity with all aspects of student government through his service on several councils, committees and boards. As rector, Chochla is the only student with a vote on the Board of Trustees, the governing body of the University. The municipal elections were brought closer to Queen's students this year when Kit Spence, a fourth- year political studies major, an- nounced his candidacy for mayor of Kingston. Spence's main opponent was Alderman Ken Keyes, who stressed the need to promote vi- gorously Kingston's attractions. Spence indicated his concern about unemployment in Kingston with a platform which emphasized the need for new, soft industry. Keyes won the December election easily, polling over 9,000 votes to Spence's 1,100 votes. Two other candidates finished significantly lower in the polling. The Minister of Colleges and Uni- versities announced over the summer that non-Canadian students starting school in 1977 would face a tuition increase from the current $600 to $1500 per two-term year. The move was reportedly made to help defray the costs of post-secondary educa- tion, and is expected to generate six million dollars in revenue for the province by 1980. The fee increase was condemned by the Ontario Federation of Students (OFS), which urged con- cerned students to send letters of protest to the Minister. In the November referendum, however. Queen's students voted in favour of differential fees for foreign students. In the same referendum, students voted against the principle of free tuition for post-secondary school students. 22% of the student body voted on the issues. Perhaps Queen's students were less disappointed, then, when the Minis- ter announced late in November that tuition fees would be raised by $100 beginning in 1977. Fees have not been increased in five years. In 1972, students were contributing 17% of the cost of their education. Because of inflation, this year's students were financing 14.4% of their educational costs when paying tuition of $600. The $100 increase will raise the students' percentage of the contribution to 16.1%. The leaders of the Ontario Federa- tion of Students presented petitions against the fee hike to the Minister of Colleges and Universities in De- cember. Alberia Premier Peter Lougheed addressed an attentive audience in Dunning Auditorium at the end of November. He covered many topics in his speech: patriation of the constitution. Western Canadaand the Parti Quebecois government in Quebec. The Premier was accorded a stand- ing ovation when he called for Canadian unity. Jessie Sloan, a fourth-year Geology student at Queen's, became the first woman in Ontario to win a Rhodes Scholarship. 1976 was the first year women were eligible tor the presti- gious award. Ms. Sloan intends to study Politics, Economics and Philos- ophy at Oxford. A capacity audience in Stirling Hall listened to John Bennett of the Greenpeace Foundation speak of the Foundation's efforts to save whales from the harpoons of Russian and Japanese trawlers. Bennett showed two films depicting Greenpeace's methods of saving whales. By posi- tioning themselves in rubber dinghies between the trawlers and the threat- ened whales, the Greenpeace Foun- dation has succeeded in preventing the death of six whales, a success with far-reaching repercussions. In recognition of the student inter- est in the Greenpeace work, the Alma Mater Society voted in January to become an institutional member of the Greenpeace Foundation, contri- buting $100 per year to the organi- zation. The Dunning Trust Lecture Series held in lanuary addressed the subject of Canadians' response to the global challenge of dwindling resources and population pressures. Dr. William Thompson, director of the Lindisfarne Association of Con- necticut, a community of scholars studying the future, expressed his hope that people will turn away from consumerism and towards an organic, contemplative life. )oe Clark, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada and Leader of the Opposition, focussed on economic difficulties. Clark ex- pressed a guarded optimism about the future. Dr. Kimon Valaskakis, director of GAMMA, a Montreal-based future studies group, proposed an alterna- tive to the inherent waste of the con- sumer society. Valaskakis presented his idea of doing more with less a vision of an economy made circular through recycling. The Bus-lt programme, which allows students to ride on city buses by showing their student cards, was nearly cancelled this year when the Public Utilities Commission sug- gested that it would discontinue its volume price discount to Queen's. The University was hesitant to commit itself to an increase in its contribution to the Bus-lt scheme. Late in January, Paul Steep, Vice- President (Operations) of the Alma Mater Society, negotiated with the University and succeeded in working out a funding system for the scheme which was ratified by the students in the February referendum. Students agreed to pay 50 r more per person for the continuation of the scheme. The University agreed to increase its contribution by 27c per student and the P.U.C. lowered its original proposal for the total cost of Bus-lt by S i6,000. Hugh Christie (President). Gord Howe (Vice-President, Operations), and Jodi Button (Vice-President, University Affairs), were acclaimed as the new Alma Mater Society Execu- tive. A proposed team of Giles Gherson, Tom Taylor and Cathy Mclnerney withdrew their nomination two days after the nominations closed. Hugh Christie promised that his team would work to minimize the effects of acclamation. ALMA MATER SOCIETY OF QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY REFERENDUM INSTRUCTIONS: Plate an x next to the response of your choice I) Should the A.M.S. become a member of the National Union of students at a cost per student of $1.00 to be added to the student nterest fee? Queen's students once more voted their agreement with the Ontario government policy of differential fees for foreign students. Membership in the National Union of Students was rejected by only 29 votes. The students agreed to pay 50c more per person to allow Bus-lt to continue. The final referendum question, asking students to allow Legal Aid to main- tain its 75c per student levy, was passed easily. Elrond College ran into financial difficulties this year when it was forced to default on its payment to the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The Board of Trustees of Queen's has refused to act as guaran- tor on the loan which is usually re- quired to meet summer payments. The Principal's Advisory Committee on Elrond recommended that the college should be made to deal with its own financial situation. The Queen's Golden Words hockey team defeated the Queen's Journal in the first annual Journal-Golden Words hockey match held on Febru- ary 5. Golden Words humbled their opponents by a score of 9-4. Germaine Greer's impact was powerful when she addressed a packed Grant Hall early in February on the subject of feminism and fertil- ity. Dr. Greer stressed that women are still underinformed about the devices they put into their bodies. She urged women to take control of their situa- tion by reassessing their priorities. The American ambassador to Canada spoke to the Queen's community on the subject of Canadian-American relations in February. Enders traced Canadian-American relations of this century with an economic slant. The Ambassador was aggressively questioned by members of the audi- ence who objected to Enders' involvement in the bombing of Cam- bodia in 1973. Protesters picketed Dunning Hall prior to the speech wearing placards which denounced Enders as a mass murderer . Andre Cunder Frank, a Marxist scholar noted for his work on political development and third world affairs, was refused entry to Canada by the Immigration Department for alleged security reasons. Gunder Frank was invited to take part in a Third World Conference at Queen's. Despite pro- tests by the conference organizers and the Queen's Senate, the Immi- gration Department did not reverse its decision. The weekend conference was can- celled when the participants with- drew from the seminar to protest the exclusion of Gunder Frank by Canadian authorities. The annual general meeting of the Alma Mater Society held on the first of March heard the reports of the outgoing members of the executive and the Inner Council of the AMS. President lamie Avis' satisfaction with the financial state of the AMS was balanced by Vice-President of Operations Paul Steep's recom- mendation that a comprehensive financial plan be drawn up. The outgoing executive received a stand- ing ovation from the fifty students who attended the meeting. The results of the February voting were declared invalid when it was discovered that the poll in Leonard Hall had closed early. The AMS court made a unanimous decision to rerun the election referendum. The decisions of February were reaffirmed by the students in March. The only change occurred in the election results when one student withdrew his nomination as ASUS representative to the AMS. T The seventh Brockington visitor was at Queen's for five days in February. Sir Walter Perry, a recognized author- ity on correspondence education, met students and staff in a series of infor- mal discussions. Sir Walter, vice- chancellor of Britain's Open Univer- sity, detailed in his public address the great numbers of people of all ages and academic backgrounds who have taken courses through the Open University. The Arls and Science Under- graduate Society (ASUS) Awards honour tour students who have made an outstanding contribution to Queen's life. This year. Bob Atkinson, Politics 77, Mike MacMillan, Film 78, Susan Walsh, Geography 77, and Brian Young, History 77, received the award. «■MSI The King's disco was picketed shortly alter its opening this spring when it barred men from dancing with men. The Queen's Homophile Association (QHA) and supporters picketed the bar on a Saturday after- noon to protest the bar's policy. The picketing was only one episode in the consciousness-raising of Kingstonians this spring about homosexuality. The graduate students of Queen's found another home this year. The former Grad House on King Street was closed in September of 1975. The new Grad House at 162 Barrie Street (corner of Barrie and Union) is open to all grad students. The house has games rooms, a television room, a place set aside for discussions and a bar on the first floor. Professor A.R.C. Duncan, Head of the Philosophy Department, was chosen to be the third recipient of the Alumni Teaching Award. The Award has been made since 1974 for excellence in teaching. Professor Duncan served for five years as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science. His chief interest is in the field of philosophical ethics. C. W. Daniel, President of Shell Canada, addressed an attentive audi- ence at Queen's this spring. Mr. Daniel predicted the continued predominance of oil and gas as energy sources. He remarked that the Middle East countries had done the world a favour in quadrupling oil prices in that they forced the West to step up their exploration for new reserves and their experiments seek- ing alternative energy sources. Contrary to popular belief, news- worthy events did not stop at the edge of the Queen's campus. In September, Mao Tse Tung died at the age of 82 and left 800 million people without a leader. The man who led the revolution and served as head of the Republic for twenty-six years was succeeded by Hua Kuo- Feng. Patty Hearst was sentenced to seven years in prison for her part in one of the most bizarre criminal cases of the decade. The Royal Military College celebra- ted its one hundredth anniversary in the fall and still the Queen's students stare at the cadets when they en- counter them downtown. The disease of the season was swine flu. Mass inoculations were begun and then discontinued when it was discovered that the cure was fatal to some and a cause of paralysis to others. Canadians talked about the solu- tions to the prison riots and the unrest at the root of them. The biggest Canadian story of 1976 was undoubtedly the November 15 election that brought Rene Levesque and the Parti Quebecois to power, power. Residents of Southern Ontario were crippled by two storms in January, one of which succeeded in closing Queen's for a half-day. Despite the various stays of execu- tion sought for the condemned prisoner, Gary Gilmore's wish came true. Gilmore's death wish was finally granted in January. Queen's and RMC faced off in February in the annual hockey match. Because of poor ice conditions, the men wore boots instead of skates. Queen's defeated RMC by a score of 1-0. Pierre Trudeau and his wife, Mar- garet, made a state visit to Washing- ton, D.C., where the Prime Minister addressed Congress. In March, free elections were held in India that turned out of office Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister whose two-year state of emergency had been so unpopular. With fifty athletes returning, 1977 shkuld be an exciting year for Queen's Football! Doug Hargreaves Football Coach Have you ever wondered, as you look at the mass of strange faces during the first football game or social event, why they all chose Queen's? A very good answer to this would be the influences of family, friends, and high school physical educators. Queen's has a great sense of spirit, tradition, and enthusiasm for the athletics section of university life. The cry of university life is ''get involved - participate . The spirit, the participation, the involvement all help to strengthen the unity felt here at Queen's. Visualize the Golden Gaels, supported by chanting and cheering from the stands. This is one of the memories that is not easily forgotten by a Queen's grad. T Perhaps the most lasting memory for the participants on Intercollegiate Teams is the annual Colour Night ceremony. 1977 marked a year in which the long desired change of the past three or four years happened. Instead of a sit-down banquet and longwinded presentations, there was a brief awards presentation with a dance and cash bar afterwards. The statistics gathered from those athletes atlendingalongwithguests.indicated that this new format was more acceptable: over 500 individuals at- tended the award presentation or dance. The major athletic- awards pre- sented at Colour Night are: The Alfie Pierce Trophy, presented by Arts '47 as a tribute to Alfie Pierce who gave a lifetime of dedication to training and helping the intercolle- giate teams of the University. It is awarded annually to the male student and the female student who contribute most to Intercollegiate Athletics in the first year at Queen's. Awarded this year to |im Muller (wrestling — football), Charlie Hit- chon (track), and Sandra Blainey (track). The lack Jarvis Trophy, is awarded annually to the outstanding graduat- ing student in Intercollegiate individ- ual sports as decided by a committee of coaches. It was presented in 1963 as a tribute to Jack larvis who for 33 years was coach of the Queen's boxing team. Awarded this year to Stu Watt (tennis — squash), and Tony Verhoeven (track - rugby). The PHE '55 Alumnae Trophy, pre- sented in 1964 by the female members of the Phys Ed class of 1955. It is awarded annually to the final year woman student who has brought most honour to Queen's University by her athletic and scholastic achievements. Awarded this year to Mary Anne Drinkwater (basketball - track), and Pam Scothorn (track). The Jenkins Trophy - this large sterling silver trophy was presented by Mr. Thomas Jenkins in 1930. It is awarded annually to the graduating student who has brought most honour to Queen's by his athletic and scholastic abilities. Awarded this year to Darrell Penner (football — swim- ming). In Basketball, the men’s team placed sixth in the final league stand- ings. According to coach Pete Smith, the team did not really learn its capacity until late in the season. He felt however, that next year. Queen's will have a good start, for those re- turning have lots of enthusiasm and the newcomers show promise. For Queen's, Andy Boniwell received the Most Valuable Player award, and Kim Carlton and Steve Simmons shared the Rookie award for 1976-77. Of the 14 games played this past season, they won 5 and lost 9, scoring 972 points and giving up 1259. The Queen's Badminton team started off the season with the old college try,” winning the East Section with 10 points. Near the end of the season. Queen’s qualified for the finals but placed fourth out of four teams. For the Cross Country Running team, 1976-77 was a terrific season, the best ever for Queen's! The coach, Walter Eadie, is to be congratulated for the fine achievements and performances by this team. Adam Shoemaker and Claus Rinne were the backbone of the team, running nearly all races side-by-side. Adam Shoe- maker placed second in the O.U.A.A. championships, and to Queen's honour, was selected to run in the C.I.A.U.'s where he placed third. Walter Eadie is optimistic for next year's team, as most of the team members of 1976 will be returning. Queen's will be in a good position to challenge the O.U.A.A. title as they will be hosting the championship meet and will benefit from the sup- port they receive in home territory. Of the 7 races entered. Queen's won 5 and lost 2, setting a record of the most wins for the Queen's Cross Country Team. The Curling team had a very disap- pointing season, losing their title of O.U.A.A. champs for 2 consecutive years to Windsor University. The team is losing two of its big guns, Phil Tonsetl and Mark McDonald, who are graduating. Next year, coach Howard Pearce will have his work cut out for him in re-building another champ- ionship curling team for Queen's. Although Fencing was not a part of the 75-76 athletic programme, it was in 1976-77. Debbie Christian coached the men in epee and foil; however, neither of the teams quali- fied for the O.U.A.A's this year. With the members who are returning. Queen's will have experience and enthusiasm for a better year and a chance for the title, O.U.A.A. cham- pions! Under the experienced coaching and active involvement of Doug Har- greaves, the Queen's Golden Gaels Football team had a very promising season. Since 1970, Queen's has not had a football team in the running, but from this year's (76-77) team, changes are evolving and next year Queen's may be in the running for the title. Of the total number of games played. Queen's won 5 and lost only 2, and established a Univer- sity record of 16 team interceptions. Overall, the Football Gaels landed third spot, an improvement over last years fourth, in the Eastern Division. Collectively, they obtained 118 points, with 106 points against. Once again, the University of Ottawa Gee Gee's placed first in the league standings with 6 wins and I loss to Queen's University. As Doug Hargreaves has said, 1977 should be an exciting year for Queen's Football . Congrat- ulations to those players named to the O.Q.I.F.C. All Stars: Dick Bakker, )im D'Andrea, Randy Edgeworth, Doug Lowry, Mike O'Connor, Darrell Penner (2 consecutive years), and Blaine Shore. The Queen's Golf Team won two invitational meets this season and qualified for the East Sectional finals. However, they had a bad day at York University for the O.U.A.A.'s, placing fifth overall. Al Lenard — coach of the golf team - commented on the ca- libre of the players as lacking in experience and hence inconsistent, yet next year is hopeful . With one exception, the entire 1976-77 Gymnastics team was composed of novice freshman competitors. They did quite well this year gathering 170.25 points at the O.U.A.A. finals, just 75.10 points behind York University - champions again this year. Outstanding improvement by all members was shown as the season progressed, so much so that the coach, Jamie Archi- bald, believes that next year is very promising. Martin Blaser received the Most Valuable Player award as an outstanding competitor for Queen's University. Mike Babcock was the new coach lor the Hockey Gaels tor 1976-77, but the season proved disappointing tor all. Placing fourth in the East Section, they did not qualify this year for the play-offs. Terry Angel was nominated for the All Star team. Once again the Queen's Rugby team was beaten for the O.U.A.A. championship title by York University. This was a much younger team, stated coach Gavin Reid, who is looking forward to next year. Of the 8 games played. Queen's won 4, lost 3 and lied 1, accumulating a total of 144 points for them and 73 points against. This year, the coach and players toured Bermuda during May. Don lohnston was voted Most Improved Player for 1976-77 and Rookie of the Year award was given to Gord Nixon. for the first time, a Canadian University Ski Team has won the In- ternational Can-Atn Championship, receiving the Bill Beck Trophy. Queen's University Alpine Ski team claimed this title by accumulating 466 points while the other schools' scores ranged from 28 through 449 points. |im Neilson has been highly com- mended by his team for his excellent coaching job this season. Queen's has also won the Ontario University series with 39 points out of a possible 40! This shows that a little talent and a lot of depth leads to great competi- tiveness and team spirit. The Queen s Alpine Ski team had all of these qua- lities and more. The Nordic (Cross Country) Ski team, coached by Peter Kopp, had extraordinary depth this past year. With all team members returning, the O.U.A.A. championship may come to Queen's in 77-78. However, this year the Nordic Ski team lost the O.U.A.A.'s to Guelph and Toronto placing a solid third in the 3x5 km relay and an individual 15 km relay race. The Queen's Soccer team had a very strong season missing the play- offs by only one tie-game. Out of the 10 games played, they won 6, lost 2, and tied 2. Coach Don Baragar has had outstanding performances from his team and his affiliation with Queen's is one of which we should all be proud. The men's Squash team, with their coach Ron Easteal, is touring London, England during May 1977. With this extra experience next year's team will be strong contenders for the O.U.A.A. title. Within the aquatics section of the men's inter-collegiate programme, the Swimming and Diving teams had a disappointing year. The coach of the Swimming team, Laurence Pike, and the captain, Tim Dennis, worked hard with the team. They ended their season in fifth place with swimmers qualifying for the national finals. The majority of members are returning next year eager to challenge Univer- sity of Toronto for the O.U.A.A. title. The men's Tennis team was a strong contender this year. In the Eastern division, they placed third losing to York and Toronto. Out of 18 games played. Queen's won 8 and lost 10. Slu Watt was co-winner of the Jack larvis Trophy this year, representing the premiere singles player on the team. In 77-78, Queen's will not have Stu Watt, yet Dr. McIntosh is hopeful that his team will perform well. This year's indoor and outdoor Track and Field teams, which were coordinated by Susan Bolton, man- aged a solid second in the O.U.A.A.'s, setting quite a few new records for Queen's. With two of the men ath- letes trying for the 1976 Olympics - Victor Gooding (relay) and Tony Ver- hoeven (pentathlon) - Queen's had strong and consistent competitors. On the Outdoor circuit. Queen's ob- tained 184 points, just 19 points from first place. The Indoor circuit points totalled 115, once again second to the University of Toronto's 30 points ad- vantage. Next year with enthusiastic coaching, our Track and Field season will pursue the long-deserved O.U.A.A. title. Volleyball is an especially exciting sport when the team is enthusiastic and has potential. This year's team, under the coaching oi Dale Huddles- ton, was the Eastern Division Sec- tional winner. At the O.U.A.A.'s. Queen's placed 3rd, close behind York and Laurentian. Out oi the 10 matches played. Queen's won 6 and lost 4 with the best record in Ontario from January on. With 5 starting players back next year and lots of height. Queen's will certainly be a strong contender for the champ- ionship. Simon Beitler has trained and con- ditioned a very strong and knowl- edgeable Waterpolo team. Queen's captured the Eastern Ontario champ- ionship, winning all of the 14 games played, but came third behind Mc- Master and Toronto in the O.U.A.A. championship. Richard Clew received the Goalkeeper's award for his steady performance with the team this year. Coach Beitler was the winner of a new award this year, that given to the coach of the team which has shown the most remarkable improvement in the season. The Queen’s Waterpolo team is losing only two players this year — Bruce Evernden and Michael Fox — so look for some outstanding polo in the future! The Wrestling team was disap- pointed in its showing in 1976-77, placing 6th overall. The team was composed mainly of freshmen, which does, however, give a bright outlook for next year. |im Muller was co- recipient of the Alfie Bierce Trophy, which is awarded to the outstanding freshman athlete. The Women's Intercollegiate Pro- gramme supports the high level of competition existing in the Ontario Women's Intercollegiate Athletics Association. To their credit, the women have five O.W.I.A.A champ- ionship titles, and four individual champions this year. Athletics may be said to play an important part in many athletes' lives. They practise hard, play hard, and produce winning teams as a result. Team members learn sportsmanship and determination. Intercollegiate Champions Women's Association Awards: O.W.I.A.A. Curling Championship Trophy, donated by Great West Life. Won by Queen's University. O.W.I.A.A. Figure Skating Champ- ionship Trophy, donated by the University of Windsor, Faculty of Physical Education 1971-72. Won by Queen's. O.W.I.A.A. Hockey Championship Trophy, originally presented by the University of Toronto for Ladies Inter- collegiate Hockey, 1921. Won by Queen's University. O.W.I.A.A. Squash, University of Windsor Trophy, co-champions. Queen's University. O.W.I.A.A. Synchro Swim Champ- ionship Trophy, donated by the University of Windsor in 1971-72, in memory of Miss H. O'Brien, competi- tor, scholar, coach. Won by Queen's University. Individual Winners: Badminton - Diana Edwards — Singles Champion (1st) Gymnastics - Debbie Bradley - All Round Junior Champion (1st) Swimming and Diving — Janet Nutter — 1M Diving Champion (1st) Outdoor Track and Field - Pam Scothorn - Shot Put Champion (1st) Queen's indoor and outdoor Arch- ery Teams, coached by Keith Kiell, had a rather disappointing season. They both placed fourth in the O.W.I.A.A. finals this year, with third place within 28 points. Three members are return- ing for next season, bringing experi- ence and more enthusiasm to their competition. With more shooting practise and team effort, which are essential in any team event. Coach Kiell is looking forward to a real team” effort in 77-78. Coach Bernie Houghton of the Queen's Badminton Team had an ex- cellent squad this year. Out of three tournaments entered, they won one and placed second in the final two, including the O.W.I.A.A champ- ionships. They gathered 103 points, just 9 points from the title. With all but one member returning, that first place title is definitely within reach. Special mention goes to Diana Edwards who won all of the three tournaments in the number I singles. The Queen's Basketball team this year welcomed eight new faces, six of them first-year students. Consi- dering the team was young, they per- formed very well, stated coach Debbie Holts. Out of their 15 games played, they won 9 and lost 6, scoring a total of 792 points and giving up 780. They placed third in the last sec- tion, qualifying for the quarter finals to Waterloo by I point (45-44). With the majority of the team returning, the team will be stronger in all depart- ments, and certainly a contender for a play-off position. For the third year in a row. the Queen's Curling Team captured the O.W.I.A.A. Championships (1976-77). Coach Brian Cox stated that this team was more cohesive and had better ability, than any team he has ever coached. With all the team members returning, he is quite con- fident about winning the 77-78 title. The Fencing Team, under the direc- tion of Debbie Christian, had a disap- pointing season. Out of 5 matches. Queen's lost I, tied 3, and won 1, placing sixth in the O.W.I.A.A. finals. The team worked very hard. Next year is a hopeful one for the girls, as all team members except one will be returning for another season in 1977-78. The Intermediate and Senior Field Hockey Teams placed fourth and fifth respectively, in the O.W.I.A.A. finals this year. The finals are extended over two weekend games and the points of the games accumulated. Queen's outplayed all other university teams. To our credit, five girls were nomi- nated for the Ontario Provincial team. With many of the girls returning, next year Queen's Field Hockey teams, under the coaching of Nanette Cuddy and Brian Groos, should remain good ones. The Queen's Figure Skating Team captured first place in the O.W.I.A.A. 1976-77 finals. Coach Nancy Brennan was proud of every team member and hopes that they perform as well next year. With such talent at synchro- nization, and all team members re- turning. the Figure Skaters may be able to keep the trophy at Queen's. Coach Drew Strickland of the women's Gymnastics Team 1976-77, developed a very strong team. Although gymnastics is said to be an individual sport, the Queen's team showed that it can be a team effort. With only four girls competing in the O.W.I.A.A. finals they led Queen's to fifth place. The junior gymnastics team placed first and second overall with special mention to Debbie Brad- ley who was the junior champion. Next year with the same spirit and talent. Queen's can improve its standings. the O.W.I.A.A. championship title. Because of this victory, the Queen's Hockey Gals were invited to take part in the Dalhousie University Invita- tional in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Due to a combination of short notice and university policies which do not sup- port post-season play, the Gals had just eight days to raise funds to cover the costs of the trip. Queen's won the Dal cup with four shut-out victories and two girls named to the all-star team. Queen's Women's Hockey Gals enjoyed a highly successful 1976-77 season culminating in an Ontario championship and similar victory in the Dalhousie Invitational Tourna- ment. Throughout the regular season, the Gals established a strong defen- sive record and won 8 of 10 contests. The two losses were suffered at the hands of McMaster, Queen's seasonal rivals. Despite injuries to several promising players. Queen's finished the regular season strongly claiming The Alpine Ski Team this year was enthusiastic, capable and talented. Having improved a great deal over last year's eighth place. Queen's placed second this year, gathering 143 points, just 28 points behind the University of Toronto, featuring an outstanding performance by lane McGillvary, who placed fifth in theO.W.I.A.A.'s: fourth in the Molson Ski Series, and helped Queen's to its fine standing in the finals. The Nordic Ski (Cross Country) Team has for the first time competed in the Intercollegiate 'A' circuit. Special mention is extended from coach lake Edwards to Carolyn Broadhurst, who won a medal at the Ottawa Capital Division. Out of nine teams entered in the O.W.I.A.A.'s, Queen's placed a respectable fourth behind Carleton, Toronto and Guelph. The Squash Team made a strong showing this year improving from second place last year to first place O.W.I.A.A. Champions this year. Of the 20 matches played in the O.W.I.A.A.'s, Queen's won 16 and lost 4. With 8 of the 10 team's members returning, and an experienced coach, chances are good that Queen's will maintain the title for another year. Queen's won both of the year's tournaments (20-0 and 18-2). Queen's Swimming and Diving Team did quite well this year, estab- lishing new relay and individual pool records in 6 events; 4 relays and in the I and 3 metre diving. With fewer numbers than ever before, coach Sheila McKirdy set standards that her team could meet. Queen's women's swimming and diving teams consis- tently manage to place in the lop 5 of 10 competing universities at the O.W.I.A.A.'s, with usually I to 2 hours less of practice time per day. This certainly reflects the dedication of Queen's swimmers. Hopefully next year Queen's will move up the ladder to obtain the title. For the fifth year in a row. Queen's has won the O.W.I.A.A. synchronized swimming championships, placing first in the Eastern division and first in the O.W.I.A.A. finals with 34.5 points. Next closest was the Univer- sity of Toronto who had 24. This year's synchro team of 11 members repre- sented Queen's well, placing second of 4 in duet, fourth of 7 in solo and first for the team routine. With 7 synchro swimmers returning, and new prospects. Queen's will try hard to keep the trophy at home. New records were set this year by both the women's Indoor and Out- door Track and Field Teams. The women's indoor team placed 5th in the O.W.I.A.A.'s and the outdoor team placed 2nd in the O.W.I.A.A. final championship. They are consistent competitors and we are looking for- ward to the performances of next year's team, under the coaching of Susan Bolton. The Queen's Volleyball Team had their best finish in the league prior to the pre-finals in 5 years, in that they placed third, qualifying for the Elite League (composed of the top 6 teams). The team was young, with 8 rookies tor the 1976-77 season, all of whom will be returning next year. In the O.W.I.A.A.'s, Queen's placed fourth by winning 10 matches and losing 8. Next year the team will be coached by Sue Higgins, as Ms. Gal- lagher will be on sabbatical. Chris Whateley's Waterpolo Gals were a very enthusiastic team throughout the year. Although they are not yet considered an official O.W.I.A.A. team, they had an exhibi- tion tournament scheduled this year. Though the team lost all of their games, they did improve considerably throughout the year. Next year is promising, as many of the rookies are returning. Some sort of organized competition is expected from Simon Beitler and Chris Whateley. The AMS concerl year commenced with an enjoyable evening with David Bromberg. In October, Dan Hill shared his talent with a receptive audience. Funnyman George Carlin entertained those in Jock Harty Arena with his unpretentious and some- times basic humour. Oscar Peterson totally captured the audience with his sensitivity and charm. His solo performance combined subtle, melo- dic imagery with brisk, ivory excur- sions. Steve Goodman was warmly welcomed by a small but appreciative audience. The Good Brothers shared an evening with Jessie Winchester and provided a night of foot-stomp- ing, hand-clapping entertainment. In what was viewed as a 'transitional' concert, Murray McLaughlin played few of his old familiar songs, but still managed to convey a melancholy at- titude which is almost becoming tra- ditional. Criticism was levelled against the AMS concert committee tor the poor planning of the Bruce Cockburn, San- tana and Todd Rundgren concerts. The concerts were scheduled within eight days of each other, during a week when students are typically broke from Reading Week expenses. A loss of almost $11,(XX) was incurred by the Todd Rundgren concert. Disregarding the finanical incon- venience to students with regard to timing, the Bruce Cockburn concert was a success in almost every sense of the word; Cockburn presented himself in a professional, but warm manner, and endeared his audience with his quiet and peaceful way. San- tana was billed as one of the most exciting rock bands, and lived up to this billing. Valdy and the Hometown Band finished the concert season with a sell-out performance. Kingston's cultural life is rich and varied in comparison with other towns of similar size. As well as the Queen's Drama and Music Depart- ments, there are a number of inde- pendent groups which add a refresh- ing perspective to the available forms of artistic expression. This year a new theatre company was established, aimed at reviving the meaning of co-operative play production . 'Pendragon' presented Love's Labours Won in late Novem- ber, and displayed a great deal of talent within a relatively small com- pany. There was little force in their production, but the actors appeared to have fun with the script, and were able to convey this original feeling to the audience. The Kinsmen presented the musical Oliver, and the Domino Theatre company produced eight shows, including Move Over, Mrs. Markham, No Sex Please, We're British, and 73 Rue de L’Amour. Theatre 5 retained their reputation for high quality and talented productions with their pre- sentations of Nautical Review, and Sittin'on a Snake Rail Fence. The Queen's Drama Department presented lour major productions over the course of the year. Their production of Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well opened the season, and was derived from a spe- cial Wintario-supported project held over the summer of 1976, which ex- plored methods of producing period plays. All's Well is centred around the Regency period, but the set and sta- geplay are deliberately inaccurate in detail, in an attempt to create a realis- tic, yet somewhat magical world. Anton Chekov's The Cherry Orchard was presented in November. Directed by Richard Trousdell, the play centres on the plight of the Ranevskaya family, who fall into debt, yet are unable to reconcile their old lifestyle with the new economy. The cherry orchard is part of the family's in- debted estate, but they refuse to surrender old ways by cutting down the orchard and leasing the land. The end result is that the estate has to be auctioned off and the family dis- persed. The production succeeded in conveying the sensitivity and com- passion of Chekov's portrayal of the decline of a charming but anachron- istic world. I '1 In lanuary, Your Own Thing, a pro- duction of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night replete with look-alike twins, misidentifications, and unrequited loves, updated by 360 years, was pre- sented. Received with conflicting reviews, the play had some spec- tacular visual effects and bright musical moments. Moliere's Tartuffe was performed in March. Directed by Maurice Breslow, the production was a conventional portrayal of how close evil can come to ruining something good. George Pothitos played the title character and effectively represented the menacing threat of Tartuffe on a charming Oregon family. This year, the 'Chronicles' series, sponsored by the Drama Department, was under the direction of Brenda Anderson. The smaller productions presented included Marlowe's Edward II, Noel Coward's Weather- wise and The Ruffian on the Stair by Joe Ortona. The Queen's Drama Guild per- formed Dickens'A Christmas Carol in December. Scrooge, played by Russ Waller, was suitably stingy. The set design was highly innovative and very effective. The Queen's Musical Theatre pro- duction this year was Dames at Sea. Directed by Bruce Kyle and Judith Bourne, and choreographed by Sandra Aitkin and Cathy Brouse, the presentation was bright and sassy. The story of Dames at Sea is a combina- tion of all the musical comedies of the Thirties, and is full of sweet love songs and lots and lots of tap dancing. The Music Department held a series of concerts of contemporary music to provide an opportunity tor the campus and the Kingston community to experience some of the current trends in modern music. These concerts also enabled composers to have their music heard and judged. In March, the Queen's Rock En- semble, a newly formed contem- porary music group, played tor a tew nights in The Underground. This set a precedent tor student talent to en- tertain pub-goers; previously, only professional groups played at the pub. The Queen's |azz Ensemble con- tinued to wow audiences wherever they played, with their easy-going attitude, richness of lone and rythmn, and general good time had by all' performances. The Toronto Dance Theatre came to Queen's in lanuary and partici- pated in a number of workshops and performances. Theirs is a form of dance based on the natural breath- ing emotion, following the body through contractions and releases, inhaling and exhaling , combined with a classical ballet training. The Mummenshanz mime theatre performed in Kingston in March. This company attempts to bring the art of mime to a more human perspective rather than the divinely musical element mime has traditionally represented. Their programme focuses on human evolution from the single cell to the primates and on human communication. The Queen's Modern Dance Com- pany went into its fifth year of opera- tion. Founded by Sandra Aitkin, and composed of Suzanne Cross, Sarah Dickie, Denise Huyler, Nancy Me- Naughton and Pam Tate, the company offers an alternative form of dance expression that is found nowhere else on campus. There is a certain flair to modern dance, both for the dancer and the audience, that is inimitable. The Queen's Modern Dance Com- pany has made the best of the little available to them in the way of finances. Attractive costumes, inter- esting lighting, and novel choreo- graphy make them well worth seeing anytime. The Arts Festival was held in late January and was under the direction of Anne Simpson and Cathy Robinson. It was an active and inter- esting week, and fulfilled its primary aim, that is, giving talent from the student population and the general community an opportunity to get together to perform, demonstrate, or show their works. Canadian writers Irving Layton and Mordecai Richler spoke of their own work, and the present situation of Canadian writers. Rinmon, an experimental modern dance company, performed, as did the Canadian Creative Music Collec- tive, a group of Toronto musicians specializing in modern jazz-like com- positions. There was a coffee house in the House of Commons all week, featuring talent from the student body, a photography and art exhibit in Mackintosh-Corry Hall, and demonstrations in weaving, pottery and batik. Bitter Grounds, in keeping with their policy of giving students a chance to see quality folk music at reasonable prices, featured a number of highly talented performers. David Bradstreet, Michael Hasek, John Allen Cameron, The Perth County Conspiracy, Brent Titcomb, Watson and Reynolds, and The White River Bluegrass Band were among those who played.
