DEDICATION Commemorative Words Spoken by Principal J.A. Corry at the Service in Memoriam Leonard W. B rocking ton Grant Hall, September 25, 1966 As we think of Leonard Brockington, we should call to mind what was once said of iidmund Burke, he had a surpassing ability to add definition and colour to the unformu- lated feelings of many thousand less articulate human beings.” In a land to which he was not born but to which he gave the fervent feelings of nature, he summed up for the rest of us the essential experience of being a Canadian, things we felt in our bones but were too clumsy to say. He had great skills for interpreting us to ourselves. He was master of the right word, the happy phrase, the clinching anecdote, in every case drawn mostly from deep wells of Hnglish speech and literary memory. He used these skills to express for us what we want ourselves and Canada to be. Above all. the rich cadences of his voice affirming his faith in, and hope for, his country made him a national possession. Queen's people knew him more intimately and possessed him more surely than any other group of his countrymen. For, just as he has been an authentic voice of Canada, so he was beyond all question, the RKCTOR MAGNIFICUS of Queen's. He was not only the Alma Mater Society’s family solicitor: He was the friend of a host of young men and women of Queen’s, through the counsel, encouragement and help he gave them. Nor did he forget them when they graduated. His care for Queen’s did not slop with students and graduates. It went to all the matters of the spirit that come within the compass and special charge of a university. Rare and beauti- ful books, precious manuscripts and collections, were always finding their way to the Douglas Library through his generosity. On the Board of Trustees, he allowed none of his colleagues to forget the purposes of a university that go beyond efficiency, utility' and wise stewardship of material things. He lavished his qualities of mind and heart on this University. He once said he was only a temporary guest at its hearth. We would not want to contradict him in much, but this we deny. He will live long in our memories, and not least will he be remembered as one ’ vho, doomed to go in company with pain . . . turned his necessity to glorious gain.” 18
