A cigarette-filled ash tray and steaming coffee in a large cup . . . a dry, slightly sarcastic wit . . . warm hello's to freshmen by name, and private jokes with upperclass- men . . . stacks of catalogues and schedules and registration folders. Catherine Atkins is first a registrar, but we see her also as an advisor, a versatile co-worker, a friend. She has a special knack of lifting spirits and breaking into loneliness, and she has shown tis a frank and happy Queens. Although we may smile at her kind but sharp reproach for low grades, we listen, and we listen well. She says exactly what she means, what she thinks. There is no false niceness. and she praises but does not flatter. It is this frank friendliness that draws us to Miss A. She gets through to us, and. without particularly trying, she gains our respect and admiration and friendship. bliss Atkins was graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, and received her Master of Edu- cation from Boston University. Leaving part of her heart in Boston, she came to Queens in 1960, and as college Registrar she has completely revamped the office and the registration system. She has looked to possible future use of IBM machines and has geared the olhce operations toward this possibility. College catalogues from every state have been gathered and arranged into a library for students interested in European programs or summer study. The problem of student registration has been organized into a smooth-running, effective process. But the long hours that students once spent working on registration could not just dissolve. they were transferred to Miss Atkins and her assistants who spend afternoons and nights working on pre-registration. Despite the tedious and tiring routine and the students' interruptions to drop-add for the third time, Miss A. keeps her quick wit and easy friendliness. Miss Atkins channels her energy in many other direc- tions. She is a member and past officer of the Quota Club, a professional businesswomen's association, and she works actively with the Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae group. Because of her dramatic experience, Miss Atkins has learned much about stage make-up, especiallv the modeling of characters' faces. She created a realistic Pinnochio for the 1965 Dolf phin Club Vilater Show, and she has worked behind the scenes for many of Queens' stage presentations. Miss A. is seldom known to pass by an antique shop without brows- ing, or to miss Bzirkes Law, a james Bond-type television program. Burke undoubtedly has thousands of fans who clamber to the sets each week, but how many of them would gibe with a grin, Burke? Are you kidding? I watch ir for the gold Rolls Royce! Perhaps the main interests of hliss A. are knowing people and living life, and she finds time Qthough we wonder wherelD to develop these interests. -zum- -In f - 57,1 1595: 'li . .iz .lf 1141
