Outside the city by the night blue sky A smokestack letting out the shapes of clouds, And the sky, and clouds, make three colors of black. Our campus sees that blackness from among The lights of town-more colors than we know, Although in night and rain we do reflect them. Perhaps in sunlight too we sometimes watch The blue and rose light falling into dark. Red is the deepest color ever was Against a sky turned upside down with sold: The japanese Map1e's crisp leaves spiral low Across the shadows, where we wait to catch f The ten-till bus-on the low Curved wall we wait, And talk an afternoon away behind us.

Whose is that face against the glass at night, Reflected clearly across a desk-or whats Beyond the glass. that makes these features show? I dimly hear your voices from a room Across the hall: what Congress did today, What Greece did yesterday, or only that Liz Taylor lost her glove along the beach. If it is true we gain by thinking back While keeping our eyes ahead, each scene is framed. By what we have not watched but surely knowg Sometimes I hear the ocean roaring dully Over the sand, as if it asked a proof Of soil to which our roots can firmly hold.
