It is not a gift but .i trust, to those who have shown, in exceptional ways, their ea' pacity for leadership, seholasic achievement, character, inde- pendent initiative, ereativeness, and quiet, unobtrusive qualities ot dependability. Q EENS and DA A SCHOLARS ln the three years that the Queens and Dana Scholarship ljrograrn has been in effect, approximately seventy students have benefited From a highly singular and meaningful learning experience. Ks the Queens Catalogue states, Students with high quality may be chosen as honor scholars each year and arc designated as Queens or Dana Scholars. Only freshman applicants for admission to Queens may bc chosen to be Queens scholars. Their program involves a spe- cial seminar taken in lieu of English composition. In addie tion to the seminar, students participate in a series of Great lloolqsu Discussions and work five hours a weelt as scholar assistants to professors. Related to the seminar, this year, stu' dents did individual projects to find the historical, present, and Future implications ol' subjects such as Socialism, Auto- mation, llincluism, and Quakerism. Upperelassmen may participate in a similar program, ere' ated by Mr. Charles A. Dana of New York, also, to drama- tize learning. The program is designed to further help the superior student develop her capacity for independent schol- arship in general college work. On the sophomore level, the nature of the seminar was a study ol' the European Renaissance. The junior seminar was concerned with science, and individual projects ranged from a study of l'Cybernetics to the topic, Relativity, Quantum Theory, and Theology: Some Speculations. At the senior level, the function of the seminar was to offer students a particular opportunity to arrive at some synoptic approach of the meaning of their college careers, and was entitled The Philosophy of a Liberal Arts Education. Through the Queens and Dana Scholarship Program, the college Hobligates itself to do all in its power toihelp these students explore the full range of their potentialitiesn and develop methods of critical and imaginative analysis which will help them become self-directing.
