Tillett has contributed immeasurably to the attain- ment of excellence in literary effort among Queens students and to the strengthening of the academic standards of the college. Through her personal magnanimity and her professional compe- tence, Miss Tillett has stimulated in students an interest in acquiring disciplined minds and attitudes characterized by intellectual curios- ity, the acceptance of responsibility, a sense of vocation, and a con- stant consideration of others. In recognition of the contributions which she has made to Queens College, in 1958 the Laura Tillett Building was named in her honor. It is with respect, admiration, and affection that we dedicate the 1959 CNORONET to Miss Tillett. il .d 'N airy NS Ixus x AX. llLLl.II '1 in i I :I nl Fanrnunii '-IB I n il! -i ,H xl, l1!J'1rLIf.W.1l1f.I,,m fwxw ex .- XX L wyylu' 111 Ilu' IAIHYM lzfflff lm1f.1n1, FORE ORD On the threshold of her second century, Queens College, enriched by the great heritage of her past, stands ready to meet the challenge of the future. Preserving her basic Christian liberal arts tradition, the college is expanding and strengthening her program to meet the new de- mands which circumstances have placed upon her and is looking forward with clear thinking and earnest planning to years of service and of growth. The program adopted by the college in i958 provides for an increase in enrollment and an accompanying building expansion which is pro- ducing marked changes in the campus. Three duplex lodges, each housing two sororities, were completed in September of l9583 at the same time, the Student Union Building was resur- faced with brick and officially named the Laura Tillett Building. Construction of a new residence hall for upperclassmen with ample space and facilities for the enlarged enrollment also began in l958. Completion of the new Irwin-McKay Infirmary in january, l959, permitted the razing of the old infirmary in order to begin construc- tion of the new library, additional books for which are being purchased with an anonymous gift of fifty thousand dollars. In the area of administration Dr. Curtis W. R. Larson, formerly of Lake Erie College, Painesville, Ohio, joined the college community as Dean of the College. New in the administrative organiza- tion is the position of Provost which has been filled by Mr. Thomas A. Keenan. Leaving her former position as head of the Department of Art, Mrs. Ann S. Gebhardt became the new Dean of Students. Student Government has also shared in the transition with the development of the merit system for boarding students and the honor system of chapel attendance. These changes in the physical plan, adminis- tration, and student government are only the first signs of the spirit of progress that now characterizes the college. The following pages will illustrate both the changes that have taken place and the spirit that will spark the future. Puge Sixteen EDXVIN R. Page Fifty-two 'Ai1z't we got fzmlu ALPHA CHI EGA DE Pfxuw LlNIVERSITY 1885 QUEENS COLLEGE 1959 Alpha Chi Omega was colonized February 3, 1958 on Queens campus through the efforts of a colonizing officer and two pledges. Since that time we have grown in number as well as in knowledge and love of Alpha Chi, whose scarlet and olive green ribbon we proudly wear under our shiny new pins. This has been a year of firsts for us: formal rush, parties and open houses in our beautiful new home, Christmas as a group with fires in the fireplace where we warmed ourselves while singing carols and Alpha Chi songs. Most exciting of all was our initiation and installation as Delta Eta chapter of Alpha Chi Omega. As the founding members of Delta Eta Chapter, we all feel a very strong bond between ourselves and the fraternity at large. The words of one of our favorite songs-written in 1885 by a founder-might well have come originally from our own hearts. . . . Alpha Chi Omega, ne'er from mem'ry shalt thou part. Alpha Chi Omega written on my heart. Page Fifty-four ALPHA DELTA PI VVESLEYAN COLLEGE 1851 QUEENS COLLEGE 1931 Thirty-eight Alpha Delta Pi's excitedly returned from sum- mer vacations to begin a busy year in the new duplex. The old furniture, redone, glowed beside the new, as many familiar objects found their new home-Alpha, our lion, beaming from his perch on the black diamond over the fireplace with scholar' ship, basketball, and inter-sorority sing trophies glittering from their new shelves. Soon came fall and Rush Week. After four Heaven Parties -we'd done it again-with fifteen wonderful little sisters. ln November we held a Benefit Bridge, and shortly thereafter came worries about selling those five boxes of Christmas cards. The alums soon lifted us into the holiday mood with a party and a brass candelabrum to use on the piano. The pledges spirited us farther into the Christmas season with their de- lightful party. After Christmas came exams, the lnter-Sorority Sing, the Basketball Tournament, initiation, new songs by the initiates, May Day with ten of our sisters gracing the court, the Silver Tea celebrating Alpha Delta Pi's one hundred eighth birthday, thirteen of our sisters joining the ranks of alums, and finally a fun-filled week together at the beach. ALPHA GAMMA DELTA SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY 1904 QUEENS COLLEGE 1930 Alpha Cams returned this year to face the tasli of moving into a new house. Finally. as the last piece of furniture was pushed into place, the last star was being secured to dangle from the ceiling. and the last bit of angel hair was draped across the piano, rush week began. The result of all our frantic preparation: twenty-six new little sisters. Throughout the entire year the little house has been bustling with excitement: pledge parties, open houses, bridge, and more bridge. VVinter came, and with it, all the sparkling snow and even brighter, many Fraternity pins. Sunday night feeds will long be remembered as will Skeeters pledge les- sons, The ACD Rose, and the pledges' wonderful Christmas dinner for all the sisters. Spring arrives, and her bright garb could not be brighter than the shining faces of the new ini- tiates. All through the year, spirit and sisterhood bind Alpha Cams with a closeness that lasts long after college days are over. L Xlllllll Xxx Xxxx. CHI O EGA LTNIVIERSITY OF Aruomsas 1895 QUEENS COLLEGE 1928 Theta Camma chapter of Chi Omega was the first national womens fraternity on this campus. Since her founding, Chi Omega has established one hundred and twentyfine chapters throughout the country and has initiated 65,000 members. The open motto of Chi Omega is Hellenic Culture and Christian Ideals. The fraternity colors are cardinal and straw: the white carnation is the Chi Omega flower. Chi Omega is founded upon six principles: friendship, sincere learning and creditable scholarship, social and civic service, high standards of person- nel, participation in campus activities, and proper selection of vocation. Among the yearly activities of Theta Gamma are spring and fall Owl Hoots Cretreatsl. This fall's Owl Hoot was held at Trinity Lodge and was in preparation for Rush Week. The Christmas service project was a Christmas Party given to the children in a Presbyterian Negro nursery in Charlotte. A soci- ology award is given on Awards Day in May, and a beach housepartv is held at the close of school. The Chi Omegas of Queens remember with warmth their first year in the new house, and look forward with anticipation to another year of mutual friendships and inspiration. Gamma Gamma chapter was begun at Queens College in 1929. There are now ninety-eight chapters of Phi Mu sorority. On this campus Phi Mu participates in various activities, such as inter-sorority competition and social functions. After a successful Rush Week, Phi Mu is proud of its pledge class of eighteen girls. With actives and pledges working together. the social service projects have included making Thanksgiving favors and Christmas stockings for the childrens ward at Mercy Hospital. In the spring the sisters sponsored an Easter egg hunt for the children of the Alexander Home. Social activities for the year have included a weekly open house, Sunday night feed, a Christmas party with the Kappa Alpha fraternity at Davidson, an alumnae tea, pledge and initiation banquets, and the annual spring function. Each year Phi Mu sponsors a house party for all its members at Myrtle Beach. Behind each activity and each girl stands the knowledge of the meaning and spirit of the bond of Phi Mu. 3 Hum: Xlmxnx ,XDII um .Xxm :mm Su 1 u .Xxm nu-vx ,Xxx ,XlklXx lin xxx Ilxnm u Xlxuu llxuun .Xn.xu Hu 1 I xm n .Xxx l:,XlXhl z x Xl XNLHXIII I Ill 1 X :xx Manx lhuumx I l num 1 Umm x X xxx x LVXNIVIII II I nxnx KXXXHXXIII L mm L num: an LQXYIX Chinn VI Hmm Rul Q4-x XQXHUIXN Cmnlmlll XIXIXIHA lXli1lX .Xxx Iuuuu .lu luLh Num Linn Ihxxx UMLM, Xxx lllXIPlIlI,I Lumux lllllllllitli Xluu Huvmvs ll-AML llusm ID-mu Imlx .Xxx IHXMPLIX IXIIUHIIQ I1-nl-Xu JXLALXIX LH xl.XHk-ARLI Lis Pu' Lliwls Suu Luvg KIITX' AICLLUD Xlxm' l.uu Nlnux .-Xuvi Nlaxwiu, Hsrn' NIUNN X.XvL'x' Xluunf Liz Panxsn Pussy PRICE CUHNIE RIYIERE C.moLx'N Ruusns .-Xlmlnsxr SIIUNIXKII PAT Sims Xfxxux' Duwxc SAIITH KITTY SPRINKLE IILARIEITA TAYLUH Klum' -IM' X'Aucu.XN Amr.-. II X II IIIII . L . .1 - .1- . N, I B ADVERTISE NTS As Queens enters her new phase of develop- ment, she is inspired by her location in one of the most progressive areas of the South. During holidays and vacations, Queens students proud- ly list the advantages of Charlotte to their fami- lies and college friends. For example, a fifteen- minute bus or taxi ride takes a student to the square. Within a few blocks are attractive, mod- ern department stores and specialty shops with merchandise to satisfy any college girl's needs. Nearby are reputable banks whose service is as efficient as it is courteous. Good theatres offer a variety of excellent first- run movies and art films, the Charlotte Little Theatre group produces plays of professional qualityg attractive restaurants offer a wide choice of delicious foods: Freedom Park and the Nature Museum provide both entertainment and instruction, concerts and Broadway hits may be enjoyed at Ovens Auditorium. The Coliseum, a marvel of modern engineering, offers a variety of entertainment including ice skating, rock and roll shows, hockey games, basketball games, the lce Capades, and various other attractions. The Mint Museum affords an opportunity to see ex- cellent year-round exhibits of painting, sculp- ture, carving, tapestry, ceramics, and experi- mental drama. The numerous churches of every denomination welcome Queens students and of- fer them opportunities for service. Charlotte provides not only a wide and excel- lent variety of merchandise, services, entertain- ment, and cultural opportunities that are usually found only in metropolitan areas but also gives the friendliness and courtesy typical of smaller cities. Queens students agree that Charlotte is truly the Queen City of the Carolinas.
