College Anti-Draft Leader Refuses Induction, Faces Jail By HARRY NLTSSDORF Mark Weintraub, a founder of the College Anti-Draft Union, refused induction at the Fort Hamilton Induction Center last Monday. He dis- tributed anti-wzir and anti-draft leaflets inside the center, and refused to step forward during the induction ceremony. lle was placed in custody at the Center and released later that day. Weintraub had burned his induction orders before 300 demonstrators in front oi' the Flushing draft board earlier that morning. Weintraub stated that he refused induction on poli- tical :ind conscientious grounds. He added that the l'.S. is committing war crimes against the Vie-tnamese people . . . I there- fore must in good conscience refuse to allow myself to he involved. The slenionstrators arrived before ap- proxinuitcly Sli men were to board a bus taking them from the draft board to Fort Hamilton for induction. They carried signs opposing the war in Vietnam and the draft and urged the arriving inductecs to refuse to serve. At the rally. Prof. Michael Brown fSnc.l, who turned in his draft card and occupae tional deferment as a war protest last month, said he found the actions of We-ine traub and other draft resistors brave and courageous, and added that he supports and admires them. Keith Lampe tl:ILll. who wore s sign reading I conspire with draft resisters, said he aids and abets, urges and counsels all young men to re- fuse the draft. That very day, five anti- war leaders, including pediatrician Benja- min Spock and Yale chaplain William Cof- fin, were indicted in Boston for having laid the same thing. Other College faculty members present at the rally included Robert Cowan Ulathb. Janet Henkin iSoc.7, Mel Reichler tSoc.l, Sol Resnick fPoli. Most Ufontinued on Page llj C A Votes Hy CHARLIE KLEIN The Committee on Student Activities de- cided the on-campus recruitment case last Friday in favor of an open recruitment- open forum policy. The decision followed almost a month of debates and hearings on the issue. The official statement released by the CSA says that the current practice of inviting and allowing outside recruiters on campus will be continued. The Committee also recommended that any agency invited to the campus be requested to engage in an open forum prior to recruitment if ten members of the academic community or any chartered student organization requests it by petition to the Placement Office. The wording of the recommendation sent to the CSA by Senate last month, which asked that any organization be rcquircrl to en- gage in an open forum, was modified by the CSA after intensive discussions Thurs- day and Friday. Another section in the Senate recommen- dation, stating that until General Lewis B. Hershey's order that draft protestors be re-classified 1-A is rescinded, no recruiters from any branch of the Armed Forces should be allowed on campus, was deleted !'howI.f's two Vietnam reporters, Lee Dembznt and Ralph Paladino, arrived in Saigon Friday, in the midst of the Viet- cong's most massive surge of the war. Both correspondents are reported well and will begin sending back their reports this week. Dcmbart, the anti-war reporter, left Kennedy Airport for Tokyo January 21, where he conferred with College graduate Bernard Richter, .Vrvcsu-rck's Bureau Chief in that city. He then flew on to Manila where he joined Paladino, the pro-war re- porter who left New York January 215. They reached Saigon last Wednesday. Meanwhile, back in the States, Phoenix Vietnam Project Coordinator Glenn Singer reported that S2500 had been raised to purchase round-trip transportation for hoth reporters: a great deal more money is needed for their support over the next three months. Before leaving, both reporters received Defense Department briefings, as well as audiences with ex-reporters in Vietnam and retired diplomats. They have received full press accreditation from the State De- partment and the South Vietnamese gov- ernment. The United States Army will provide for their transportation and board in their travels across the country. Their plans for the next three months call for two reports-one factual and one interpretive-to be tiled each week. They will be sent to Phoenix air mail-special de- livery unless they are exceptionally timely. in which case they will be sent by cable. The reporters' itineraries call for them to Hy around the world. After leaving Saigon, they will Hy to New Delhi, Prague, Stockholm, and London. In Stock- holm, they will attempt to interview the four United States Navy deserters. Travel' ing around the world will cost approximate- ly 20 dollars more than flying bark over the Pacific. Dembart left for Seattle from Kennedy Airport at 12:02 in the afternoon on Sun- DR. R. ABC-TV, and the Daily Xcifs. Paladino's plane left Friday morning, January 26 at 9:30. He was greeted by a CBS-TV crew that interviewed him and made him walk towards his plane about six times before their film satisfied them. At least 81,000 more is needed to sup- port the reporters in Vietnam and pay back debts owed to the Phoeni.r'a printing budget. Singer claims that the prospects are excellent that we will raise this money. We expect a good deal of support on cam- pus and from alumni and we have been receiving a favorable reception from col- legiate and professional papers. p n Recruitment Policy entirely. The CSA statement concludes by reaffirming the right of any individual to voice dissent as long aa such dissent does not physically deny the rights of stu- dents or guests, or violate local or Federal laws. The open forum policy was favored by many students speaking at the open hear- ings on recruitment held by the CSA last month, as well as having the backing of Senate. However, it was thought by most at that time that it would be made man- datory for recruiting agencies. How crucial the changing of required to requested will be is not yet known. According to Paul Cohen, SA President and CSA member, The open forum should have been'made required instead of re- quested, but the decision is still a good one. Cohen added that, the foium will provide an outlet for disagreement. Those who engage in civil disobedience should always weigh in their own consciences how far this disobedience should go. College otiicials must also take into account the right of peaceful protest, though. Commenting on the omission of the par- agraph barring military recruiters, Cohen said, the Hershey order has been I0 watered down by now-and no proof is available that it was ever put into effect- that this really doesn't matter. Hershey! notice will still be overturned in court, however. The CSA decision must now be approved hy Faculty Council, Student Senate. and Pres, Joseph P. McMurray. Marcia Furlani, president of the Con- servative Club, has been working for open recruitment since the issue was tirst raised. Now she states that the open forum clause represents a capitulation by the admini- stration to a small minority of rowdy stu- dents. She vowed that every single agency that was formerly asked to come will be asked again by her organization, includ- ing the military. Sign Here Want to write for Phocnix?
