The muscles of Queens College, the power plant and the systems of heating and electricity are being rapidly remodeled. Unnoticed by many students, a big new plant is going up behind the student building, but the one thing on campus that students cannot fail to see is the new chimney. At one time the tallest obiect at Queens was the chimney of the power plant behind the student building. How- ever, as part of the plan, a tremendous new rival is rising on the other side of the cafeteria, white-blue in color, like the Science Building, it is making students realize how small, dainty, and almost rococo is the old chimney. This old chimney has conscientiously overheated Queens College for over a decade, but now it is not efficient enough to take care of the new Queens College. The new white behemoth was, at first, nothing but an unidentified nuisance to the music classes, because the off beats of construction did not help their concentration on Hindemith, Buxtehude, and Perotin, but now is visible from all over campus. Coming up the crescent-shaped terrace from the upper campus to the student building the com-

parison between the two chimneys, and sym- bolically between the Old Queens College and the New, is thrust upon one. The old chimney is yellow-brown in color, like a ma- ture meerschaum, and each brick is accen- tuated by a mellow brown border of smoke- grimed mortar. The summit of the old chim- ney is smoothly rounded off into a lotus-like shape which gives the old chimney a deco- rative and rather roue -ish look. The un- finished new chimney is already taller than ,W the old one and much thicker and more streamlined, the white bricks fit smoothly img one another, so that the general view of the surface is that of an immaculate cemem cylinder. One can tell even from its unfinished appearance that this tall massive chimney will perform efficiently its function as the heart muscle of the college. We have come a long way from the radar tower in the mist to the great white stack in the clouds.
