All in all, the history of sports at Queens College has ben an eminently successful, if short one. Stimulated by coaches and students who gave unselfishly of their time and effort, sports have risen to a position of respect and esteem on campus and oFf. Today, Queens can boast of as fine an athletic record and program as any small college in the country, and it can still boast an unblemished aca- demic standing. Only when sports can mix successfully with studies, can they sincerely be said to be deserving of a place in college life, and it is this happy, enviable position that Queens College finds itself today. At the beginning of the current campaign, the sport was threatened with dis- solution when Mand left the school. ln order to save ll, college President John J. Theobald agreed to take over the coaching duties, and despite the scoffing of those who were sure that his manifold academic chores would preclude any such outside work, Theobald stayed with the squad, and is currently prepping it for extensive inter-collegiate competi- 148
