The open west end of the quadran gle, when blocked by the fog, seemed to sug gest the edge of the world, our world. The radar tower seemed the last tangible boundary to our red and brown isolation, but of course we knew that past the radar tower were theNew- town plowed fields, theicemetery, the old Worlds Fair grounds, and eventually Manhattan, which we .could see when the mists blew away. r warnings of the tremendous growth to come were the gray and white temporary buildings, the L buildings and K buildings. While they did seem to be made of card- board and matchwood, while they did sway and creak in the eternal gales of Queens, cmd while they were consistently and obtusely over-heated from spring to winter, yet they were the first imperfect symbols of the spirit of growth. Another indication of the long-range aims of Queens Col- lege was the small rectangular drawing outside of the President's office showing a campus filled with large white buildings, widely spaced and massive in proportion. A third invisible indication was the Ten-Point plan for the long range expansion of Queens College, the maturing of which we are experiencing right now. When we came, however, there was iust the quadrangle, the two more isolated buildings F and G, the temporary buildings K and L, the Home Economics building, the student building, the bookstore, the wind and the fog. 9, ff 3 f f V sn 1 'Ar J , li wv'0 14, lol. The first real construction of the project was the big gym, Q build- ing. Along with the E Annex and K Annex, it was bought from the government as part of Army Surplus, This big white building, by far the largest single room on the campus, was the first indication that Queens College was due for tremendous growth. Unfortunately, the water sys- tem and the nets of electric cable required to service such a large struc- ture had to be laid below the surface of Queens College-a project which involved the first tearing and breach- ing operations on the college lawns. Students soon got accustomed to long, unexpected trenches darting across campus, to large, flat, brown iron plates laid across the trenches, to sudden unexplained chasms in odd public places, and most of all to the huge amounts of red-brown mud stirred up by the excavations. All these nuisances sank to the status of mere nugatory hindrances when the gym was completely reconstructed. The tremendous beams, the gleaming yellow floor, the huge amount of square yards of air, and especially the glistening, transparent backboards for the baskets, all of these un- expected trophies made a large impression on the collective ego of Queens College. We had finally achieved a large basketball court, if nothing else, our players no longer had to confine their practices to moody dribbling in the cellar under H auditorium, in the fear that long passes would bounce furiously back from the formidable network of waterpipes clinging to the ceiling of H gym. The ferocious chaos and mud-churnings of the gym construction seemed small and innocent indeed compared to the constant brouhaba attendant upon the construction of the first permanent building of the Queens College of the Future, Ira Remsen Hall. Surrounded by a gooey sea of mud, the new building lurched skyward as the months ambled by. The steelgirders, painted over with bright orange corrosive-resistant paint, soon began to outline a structure large enough to convince any skeptical student that Queens College architecture was enter- ing a new phase, a new dimension of magnitude, with a new conception of size and an entirely dif- ferent frame of mind in regard to student capacity. The small-college mentality was disappearing from Queens College, washed away by streams of mud and by noise of building. Two huge amphi- theatres, long stone corridors, telephones in the classrooms, an elevator, large laboratories, and dozens of miscellaneous classrooms, all these fea- tures of the Science Building do not seem to be essential to a small college, but Queens is no longer a small college. The cinnamon-brown atmosphere of the college of l947 has given way to the great, 14, f, f -Q f. 'S Y ON V A was .s-Qx white blue, massive, widely spaced college of, let us say, i960 One of the interesting and significant points about the construction is the complexity and detail of the planning incidental to the actual build lng of Remsen Hall Dean Lenz mentioned that there was one man attached to the prolect whose only function was to follow up the thousands of pieces of paper connected with the ordering of construction materials, and the acquiring of city permits. This man was called the lubrication engineer and the urgent need for such a specialist illustrates the com- plexity of the operation. ihgsi-x-x-Qyux., . r-.- g Q 55-sk A N s .. Unnoticed by many students, a big new plant is going up behind the student building, but the one thing on campus that students cannot fail to see is the new chimney. At one time the tallest obiect at Queens was the chimney of the power plant behind the student building. How- ever, as part of the plan, a tremendous new rival is rising on the other side of the cafeteria, white-blue in color, like the Science Building, it is making students realize how small, dainty, and almost rococo is the old chimney. This old chimney has conscientiously overheated Queens College for over a decade, but now it is not efficient enough to take care of the new Queens College. The new white behemoth was, at first, nothing but an unidentified nuisance to the music classes, because the off beats of construction did not help their concentration on Hindemith, Buxtehude, and Perotin, but now is visible from all over campus. The summit of the old chim- ney is smoothly rounded off into a lotus-like shape which gives the old chimney a deco- rative and rather roue -ish look. The un- finished new chimney is already taller than ,W the old one and much thicker and more streamlined, the white bricks fit smoothly img one another, so that the general view of the surface is that of an immaculate cemem cylinder. One can tell even from its unfinished appearance that this tall massive chimney will perform efficiently its function as the heart muscle of the college. Reluctantly, our Amer- ican people have come to realize that the only immediate hope for maintaining peace lies in the development of military strength to give pause to a brutish and bullying foe. Obvious as the need for this military emphasis is, it should also, be re- membered that armed might alone can, at best, result only in armed truce. Military victory, despite its cost, is no ultimate guarantee of peace. We must therefore find additional means to achieve this end. In the final analysis, lasting peace will come only as the result of a firm code of moral and ethical standards. A love of fellow man which supercedes even displeasure at his actions. A determination to be more concerned with doing our best than with whether or not the other fellow is doing his according to our standards. A basic readiness to evaluate others by what they do rather than by who they are or who their forebears were, and the ability to resolve differences in an atmosphere of mutual trust and good will. 1 This is no simple formula. It can be violated even when one is motivated by noblest intent. We may well be failing most to measure up to its exact- ing standards at the very time when righteous determination makes us feel we are serving best. It is, however, the only answer to the total peace and security which we all seek. lt is the challenge of your generation. You can succeed where those before have failed. The time has come when we place the future in your hands. We do so with the greatest of confidence. Good luck and God bless you all. John J. Theobald 20 I F Vs ul Sd d. eel md E00 JOHN J. THEOBALD, Ph.D. Presidenf of Queens College 21 greet you, Seniors of 1951, in a mood of reminiscence. Ten years ago this month our first class was graduated, and, today, memories grave and gay-tender, proud, and wistful-throng my recollection of our beginnings at Queens-and of all that has happened since-in the world, in the Col- lege, and in the lives of the thousands of alumni with whom you are now to be num- bered. The decade closes at a point of crisis- a word dramatized by an ancient people in symbols of danger and opportunity. You have in your day a full measure of both- a greater measure, indeed, than did the Class of 1941, who, shadowed through their college years by the threat of war, marked in that first Silhouette the grim uncertainties of their time. To learn how to think, they wrote is hard. To apply our thinking in an irrational world, iS harder still. And they closed their class book with a question. Had they learned their lesson well enough? Would they Send their children into a saner world? lt was easy for you, the men and women of '51, to answer that question in dis- illusion and cynical doubt. Ten years 090 as children in elementary school, hearing talk of Pearl Harbor, and long afterwards, of V-Day, and J-Day, and then of the United Nations with its chartered vow to build in the minds of men the defense Of peace, you held assurances of a secure and challenging future. Today, as college graduates, after years of continuing Un' lgqm how To 0PPll world, li 'heir class Y learned fhgyS9lld ? ndwomll m in WIS U90 y hgarllg geNurflS: W of ill dvow lo .ferr l a Welle U wllege . url' W9 rest, of wars and rumors of war, you go to the still unfinished task in a world crying Peace, Peace and there is no Peace! Yet, in the tempered consideration of reality there must be neither cynicism nor doubt. The task, unfinished, is far ad- vanced. You will not fiinch from the final fight. The ways of democracy are tedious and the time table of its goals is not set in measured years. Accomplishment, even in its most significant moments, is often imperceptible in the anxieties of the hour. New occasions teach new duties, and with hope, new-strengthened in conviction, you will rise to yours. The peril of crisis is not a thing of far away nor of another day. The danger is clear and present. ln your opportunity there is the urge of immediacy and of unpredictable emergency, even of finality. For your generation, in very truth, what is past is prologue. The common danger is our common op- portunity-supremely your opportunity. The free world-with your country, will- ingly or not, its leader-is come to grips with an avowed attack on the natural rights of man. The enemy is superior only in might of numbers. Our hope of defeat- ing him lies first in the physical endurance, fighting ability and courage of those who defend us in battle. lt lies, too, in the ade- quacy of our materiel and in the continued flow of manpower. It lies, as well, in the thinking power and spiritual quality of those who in civil life direct the battle and who, out of their creative skill and industry send to the field the products of techno- logical development. The battle, indeed, is to the strong, to the scientifically powerful, to the able of leadership, to the mighty of faith. ln all this, you, so far as you repre- sent and contribute to the trained intelli- gence of loyal American youth, have com- pelling obligation. Commencement means the breaking of the ranks-your individual, independent, striking-out across the world beyond the classroom. Wherever the way may go, wherever time or circumstance may lead you, l pray that the old associations will hold you forever friends and classmates. We, your teachers, will follow you with affectionate concern, grateful for the in- spiration of your youth and promise, eager for the fulfillment of your most cherished hopes. And if I myself have one last word to give you, this would I ask, that you accept literally the responsibilities of active citi- zenship in a democratic society. Prepared for leadership as you are, aspiring as you do to the respect of men of learning and power of distinguished achievement, you can, if you will, reflect your American heritage in the fullness of its assertion. Throw the weight of your infiuence against the deadening apathy of our people's in- difference to the privilege and responsi- bilities of the franchise. Be faithful in the exercise of your own right to vote. Take active part in public life. As citizens of high purpose and forceful plan, look to the passage and enforcement of construc- tive legislation in every area of the public interest, to the election of public officials of conscience, courage, and competence, to probity and efficiency in public and private life-decency spelled out in real- istic standards of personal integrity and ethical conduct. In war and peace, at home and abroad, fight to rebuild in our American life the disciplined morality in which alone abides our first, last and only hope of a rightly ordered world, a world at peace, with liberty and iustice for all. Here's to the class of '5l! You had yourselves a load of fun. Took courses quasi at the point of a gun And ran for whatever anyone can run. You learned to live and not to quail While the old world spun and chased its tail. Torch in hand, with faith in the right You pursued the truth with all your might. ln parting I give you this friendly wish: May the torch and your faith make you fabulously rich, For these in every course you run, Determine at length your place in the sun. SPORTS espite obstacles of size, youth, com- parative obscurity and academic inclina- tion, Queens College has managed, in its thirteen years and particularly in the last four years, to gain athletically, a position of power among the smaller colleges in the Metropolitan area. Handicapped at its inception by the midget size of its male student body, rarely hovering over the 1500 mark, by the fact that it takes years . . . decades to fashion really powerful intercollegiate squads, by the realization that good high school athletes will not tend ordinarily to gravitate towards a school which does not boast a long and rich ath- letic heritage, and by the general stressing of the academic aspects of college life and the underplaying of the physical education facets of a liberal arts education by the early school officials, Queens embarked nevertheless on a policy of varsity compe- tition and within a few years was not only able to hold its own among local competi- tors, but in many instances miraculously become a ranking power in Met circles. At the start, Queens opened its compe- tition in basketball and baseball against local high school competition. Even in those circles the first Knight athletes were not overwhelmingly successful, bowing in both sports to schools like Flushing and Jamaica High. For years, varsity competition was limited to those sports, while the great stress was placed on intra-mural athletics, a program which has reached vast and comprehensive proportions today, and g which is one of the most successful ven- tures of its kind on any campus. Perhaps even more than other schools, Queens was hard hit by the advent of World War ll, for then, the ordinarily small male enrollment, rapidly depleted by the armed forces, gradually diminished to an appallingly low figure. Nevertheless, ath- letics were maintained, and some new sports were engendered during the early 4O's, including a tennis team, a soccer team, and, under the guidance of record high iumper George Spitz a sort of semi- formal track squad. With the termination of hostilities in '45, Gnd the return to school of the great bulk of the male student body, sports began a new life at Queens. Lesser known squads were formed, mainly through the unstinting efforts of the students interested, and soon Queens boasted teams in rifle, bowling, and table tennis. lt was perhaps in the last named sport that the Flushing school re- ceived its most publicity, for the Knight squad boasted the talents of the National and International Woman's Champion, Peggy McLean. The two other teams plugged along, embarking on a competi- tive program that included competition with the top schools in the city. It was during the athletic season of 1947-1948, the term of the entrance of the present graduating class, that sports at Queens began a complete reiuvenation. The renaissance manifested itself particu- larly in the four major sports, basketball, baseball, tennis, and soccer. At that time, a permanent coaching staff, comprised of physical education teachers, was named, and a genuine effort was exerted to propel Queens, within the limits of its rigid aca- demic standards, to a position of eminence among schools of equal size. The coaches at that time, and they have remained intact with one exception, were Bob Salmons, basketball, Bob Tierney, baseball, George Spitz, tennis, and Glen Howard, Soccer. Bill Madden remained as head of the Outdoor Club and of the very important Recreation Committee of the Physical Education Department. Salmons, former football and hoop ace at Murray State, Kentucky, suffered a usual Queens fate in his first year, drop- ping more than twice as many games as he won. By the '48-49 season, sparked by George Gaetano, Bruce Hurley, and Dewey Sehring, who set an all-time Queens scoring record with 345 points, the Salmonsmen had made a complete about face, compiling a record of T5 wins against 8 losses. The highlight of the sea- son was the Knights' brilliant one point win over Hofstra, after having trailed by T7 points at the half. ln an extra-season game against Hofstra, which began the Greater New York Collegiate Conference, Queens was unable to repeat against the flying Dutchmen and went down to defeat in the opening round. During the '49-50 season, practically the same team, minus the spectacular Gaetano, had an almost identical season, emerging with a l5 and 7 slate. ln the Conference, the Knights placed in a tie with .Hofstra for second place honors. Hurley, who shared the award with Gae- tano the year before, won the Regan-Stein Most Valuable Player Trophy. One of the highlights of that season, was the concentration of the great JV Squad, under the brilliant tutelage of Guido Foglia. Considered one of the top fledgling squads in the city, the embryo Knights had a 19 and 3 season, and peo- ple looked to them to supply the varsity with some of the brightest stars in Queens history. The present season started as people had expected. Hit hard early in the season by the loss to Uncle Sam of two of the great stars of the former wonder JV'ers, John McShane and Pete Hoban, and the loss by graduation of Shering and Hurley, the two most prolific scorers in Knight hoop history, Queens nevertheless looked like a smooth-working combination in pre-season scrimmages. Sparked by soph- omore Bob Shapiro, who had led the JV with 333 points, co-captains Arnie Markbreiter, and Herb Sessler, Dave lnz, Dan Kostyshyn, Bob Burggraf and Bob Bier, fans looked to the Knights for their greatest season in history. After the first eleven games it looked as though the Knights would far exceed everyone's expectations. After holding powerful, prefix CCNY even until nine minutes before the end when its big men Kostyshyn and lnz fouled out, the Flushingites went on to win ten straight, including a brilliant 80-61 victory over highly-touted Brooklyn College, in what was probably the greatest game a Queens team ever played. Suddenly, however, the Knights lost their touch. Following an extended mid-season layoff, the Salmonsmen came back to drop seven games in a row. Regaining their form they managed to take their next two, but then dropped the season's finale in a fantastic, five-overtime thriller to Cooper Union, 110-105. Shapiro, who scored 317 points was the Knights' big gun, and was honored to a second place berth on the Metropolitan All-Star team by the NYC's sportswriters. Uncle Sam willing, the future looks bright for basketball at Queens. Shapiro, Bier, lnz, and another sophomore, Bill O'Meara, should all be around for several years, along with diminutive Seneca Thompson, a high 144 o le 0Sl u Pli- nie ruf Ory, for ven lnz liunl ubly nded in u ' then ooper rl was um by USERS all be 0 high ms . .Af ff f. The '49 aggregation chalked up a commendable slate, including twin wins over St. Francis and a victory over highly regarded City College. The mainsprings of the Knight nine that year were the three smooth field- ing clouters who made up the great- est outer garden trio in Knight history, George Morfesi, Gene Eliasoph, and .lohn Constantino, shortstop Aram Nalbandian, and a perennial on the Queens sport scene, flashy Joe Lo- castro, who batted second that year in the Metropolitan area. Last year, behind the strong right arm of lanky Bob Mueller, whose 7 and 2 record and 2.84 earned run average rated him a bid from several major league clubs including the one he accepted, the Chicago White Sox, Tierney's charges notched a splendid l l and 7 record. John Moench, Frand Gliva, Bob Shapiro, and Jim Odrich helped the ever-present Locastro in the hitting department, as the Knights emerged with another win over City, and victories over Adelphi and St. Francis. Locastro, a hard man to get rid of, is assisting Tierney this year, as the Knights hope to fashion an- other winning season led by their captain, Andy Locastro, and Pitchers Al Kapikian and Milo Misut. At the beginning of the current campaign, the sport was threatened with dis- solution when Mand left the school. ln order to save ll, college President John J. Theobald agreed to take over the coaching duties, and despite the scoffing of those who were sure that his manifold academic chores would preclude any such outside work, Theobald stayed with the squad, and is currently prepping it for extensive inter-collegiate competi- 148 l nd nIH9 ave ll ,ef tht re all nd is m ell 1 tion. His co-workers in this unprecedented venture are equally prominent Queensites, Dr. Henry Miller, of the De- partment of Economics, and Dr. Edmund Woods, of the Department of Biology. All in all, the history of sports at Queens College has ben an eminently successful, if short one. Stimulated by coaches and students who gave unselfishly of their time and effort, sports have risen to a position of respect and esteem on campus and oFf. Today, Queens can boast of as fine an athletic record and program as any small college in the country, and it can still boast an unblemished aca- demic standing. Only when sports can mix successfully with studies, can they sincerely be said to be deserving of a place in college life, and it is this happy, enviable position that Queens College finds itself today.
