As Christians we are aware that a woman was the driving force behind two of the major events in the historical development of mankind-the Fall of Adam and the Nativity of Christ. This has been the role of women throughout the pages of history -the instrument of man's fall or the instrument of man's restoration in the moral order. And so too, must this be our role as CATHOLIC LEADERS in the new DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE. We, as Catholic Graduates, must move into a man's world of nuclear energy, techniques and mechanical progress and there become a driving force for good -sanctifying our souls and the souls of mankind about us. Mindful of the potent words of Pope Pius XII - Your destiny is at stake , we realize fully that ours is a noble destiny, that of becoming leaders in all phases of Catholic life in a pioneer Diocese of Holy Mother Church. A ninety percent increase in population in Suffolk County in the past seven years and statistical proof that Nassau County is the fast- est growing county in the United States since the Second World War made it mandatory for His Holiness, Pope Pius XII to establish our new Diocese of Rockville Centre. In doing so, our Holy Father has presented the youth of the diocese a challenge- a challenge to be the bearers of TRUTH to a post- war, chaotic world, seeking its security in ballistic missiles and hydrogen bombs. Through the pages of our 1958 THE REGINA we present the phases of Christian living in which Catholic leadership is most needed-the Spiritual . . . Educational . . . Cultural . . . and Social. Our embryonic Diocese, with a population of 1,346,414 of whom 482,716 are Catholic most certainly needs stalwart, God-fearing leaders. We can not expect our Diocesan clergy of three hundred fifty-four priests to bear the responsibility of advancing the Rockville Centre Diocese to a top ranking diocese . . . top ranking in spirituality and moral leadership. We, the Graduates of 1958 offer our fealty to our Esteemed Bishop as his future leaders in the words of the Sovereign Pontiff, Lay apostles will there- fore always form an elite, not because they stand apart from the others but, quite the contrary, be- cause they are capable of attracting and influencing others . . Queen of thc Rosary is honored by his Excellency, Bishop Kellenberg, on L1 personal visit to our school. 8 And now, my dear Son, if you desire that God should bless your apostolate and make it fruitful, under- take everything for His glory, saturate yourself and your devoted fellow-workers with the spirit of jesus Christ . . . These words of Pope Pius X in 1908 to Bishop Cloutier are most significant to us, the Graduates of 1958, for they make us better realize our responsibility to you, our beloved Shepherd, Bishop Kellenberg, as your devoted fellow-workers in our ever-growing Diocese of Rockville Centre. As our Episcopal Leader you have inspired, guided and assured us of your paternal solicitude. Your personal magnanimity, your sacerdotal excellence and your outstanding qualities of leadership have won for you the approbation of our Holy Father. In recognition of this great honor, we dedicate our 1958 THE REGINA to you, as a lasting mark of our respect and filial affection for you. Moreover, we feel a special affection for you because the motto on your escutcheon reflects our own ideals- Regina Verte Lumina' '... Queen, guide me by thy light . . . Certainly this has been our motto also, during our four years at Queen of the Rosary Academy. Thus, it is fitting, on the year of the 30th anniversary of your ordination, to welcome you Most Reverend Walter P. Kellenberg, through the pages of the 1958 Regina. The members of our faculty, aware of their profound responsibility, aim daily to inculate in us the fundamental Christian truths that will enable us to become leaders in every phase of American life. The evils facing Catholic youth to- day demand an opposing force of tremendous courage-Courage and Christian fortitude supplied by the self-sacrificing teachers who have guided us these four years. The primary duty of Catholic education is the formation and development of the spiritual, physical and intellectual life of the student. It is for this purpose the members of our faculty, both religious and lay, have dedicated their lives to be an instrument in the training of Catholic youth. To do all things for God . . . to suffer whatever He wills . . . to accept His infinite Words of Wisdom in directing our souls-this is our aim as future leaders in our newly-created Diocese. This was the spirit of the saints . . . the spirit of those who have guided us these four years. It is the spirit in which these memorable pages are written. . . You must be inspired with the conviction that you are fighting for truthg that you are sacrificing in the cause of truth your tastes and energies, wishes and sympathiesg that you are fighting for the eternal laws of God, that you are sacrificing for the dignity of the human person and for the attainment of its destiny. One of the essential factors fostering Catholic leader- ship is the training our minds and wills to the definite purpose and reason for our very existence on earth. Our freshmen are involved with the study of the early Church and its successes. The sophomores delve into the study of the Mass and its significance in their lives. The Old and New Testament and the events characteristic of that time are the phases studied in the Junior Religion classes. As Seniors, we are trained in the History of the Church and a thorough understanding of the married state and the Church's views on this subject given to us in an en- cyclical by Pope Pius XI. Thus, these four years of study of Catholicism have trained us for Christian leadership in today's turbulent world. ? All-Aboard for the Villanova Staff Members wave a cheery good-by to Sister Aloysia Maria, O.P., enroute to Villanova Uni- versity in Pennsylvania. The efforts and initiative employed in producing and progressing with this milestone of tradition can be credited for the most part to the 1958 Regina Staff. They have achieved this, their goal through co-opera- tion and working as a unit with developed insight into the problems of the publication. Under the guidance and helpful direction of our moderator. Sister Jeanne Dolores. O.P., the staff has been able to attain a high degree of accomplishment, understanding, and achieve- ment in the field of journalism through producing their own annual chronicle of school life-The Regina, ur Milestone of Pro ress . . . The written word has always exerted a potent influence upon the conduct and character of readers. Teenagers, especially, are becoming increasingly aware of the power of the press. Here, at Q. R. A., our school publication, the Rosarian, is one of the central student activities. Responsibility for the newspaper is entirely en- trusted to the junior Class. The editor-in-chief, joyce Schrepfer, and her assistants are chosen by the moderator, Sister Mary Mark, O.P. They are ex- pected to exhibit a particular talent for writing, as well as initiative and exemplary Catholic conduct. The pages of our school quarterly are replete with humor, pathos, and inspirational editorials. Progress is an ever important factor in journalism. At certain intervals during our school year, dramatic plays are presented to the student body, and to their relatives, friends and others by certain talented and gifted students of Q.R.A. Examples of this dis- played talent would be The Bell of Barcelona, the Senior play of the class of 1958 The Song of Bernadette and Kitty Kelly. All these plays were of excellent standing among those who saw them and were most assuredly enjoyed by the entire student body. Thus, we have enjoyed all dramatic undertakings at Q.R.A. during the 1957-58 school year and we sincerely appreciate the work the Queen's Players contributed to the success of every play performed. i 1 i Bernadette's mind wanders as Sister Marie Therese Vauzou fDoris Blucherj explains the map of France. ! lB.k gy I f 0 l 0 ' 5 ,v ...,ylff'5 'i Must you always have your crowd of on- A .A lookers follow you? queries Dean Peyramale :ti V' Fklftjffiggl-2f':, ' flfrancine W'ojtanowsl4yj angrily, .J 1 '- Jfayf' V' ' Irene Negosh and Regina Berkman help Sylvia Dumaresq set the scene for Song of Bernadette.
