oeaptams Walsh and Conlon await verdict of a coin 'fflipf' '53 VARSITY ootbaii Coac pea QS Football to many of you is an exciting sport to ob- serve on an autumn afternoon but to the twenty-five MEN of the Q.P. varsity, football is a love and a personal sacrifice. Every afternoon, rain or shine, you will find behind N.A. high school the varsity in actiong that is, if you can find the time to leave the afternoon tea party. At a typical afternoon practice session you might see Joe Brady leading the boys while running lapsg Don Kieffer exercisingg Knobby Walsh digging for the extra yard with Walt Gunn on his backg Dude MacDonald punting to Rich Maddern and John Morrellg Ed Conlon and Lou Morrell passing to the endsg Jim Bayer and Dave New- ton making vicious tackles and blocksg or Ed Kiernan down field blocking on the dummies. All the squad participates in these fundamentals along with the above mentioned few. Afternoon practice session commences before four and ends as you are probably at home enjoying the eve- ning meal or listening to the steeple chimes ring six times. Before the team is dismissed in the evening they run a half mile. The headlights of many cars light up the field so as to guide the squad around the field. Now the boys go home to clean up and have their evening meal or study. Sometimes everyone is too fatigued to enjoy the evening meal or study but the team knows that good students make better team players. The description of a typical practice day might not sound too rough but before you judge, consider that the twenty-five MEN now on the team are the survivors of an original squad of fifty boys. Congratulations to these men who have the desire to play football and the courage and stamina to endure the physical and mental strain of practices. The MEN now on the squad are all the TEAM men and everything they do is as a unit. Thanks to the students who are making such personal sacrifices for the honor of Q. P. Sometimes we wonder if such hard work is necessary as victories haven't come as frequently as desired but the coaches believe that the hard work has built up character in the team and has prevented injuries and the individ- ual will benefit in years to come. Terry Kearney, Joe Sheedy, and Rich Maddern, unable to play for the rest of the season, are valuable assets to the team as they give the fellows added incen- tive and extra spirit. In this my first venture into the field of coaching, I have enjoyed many pleasant .days along with the bitter moments and I want to thank the MEN who have worked so hard for me. The team is deserving of many honors for their efforts. As students of Q.P., and parents, you should be justly proud of these sons who represent our school.
