1951 Fighting Irish . FIIUTBALL Coach Tully Speaks After four highly successful campaigns clur- ing which the boys of Our Lady won 26 games, tied 3, and lost only 4- disaster struck, as the 1951 Irish went down for the count in six of their eight games. A 13-7 victo1'y over a tradi- tional rival, Pope Pius of Passaic, and a 30-25 usqueakerw over Fordham Prep of the Bronx, New York, were the only bright spots of the sea- son. In fairness to all concerned, some factors which contributed extensively to the demise of the Queensmen should be mentioned here, not for the sake of implying that things may have been different wif onlyw-but just to make the season7s analysis accurate. To begin with, teams which Queen of Peace had been beating regularly, squared some old accounts. Immaculate Conception of Montclair, beaten four straight years by the Irish, gained sweet revenge to the tune of 44--61 After taking three successive beatings from the Green and Gold, St. Mary's of Rutherford punched out a 21-O victory. Then, Harrison, not to be denied after four years of famine. downed the Irish in a 13-7 mudfight. Another factor, one that is not appreciated by the average fan, was that the Irish lacked Ha good bench meaning experienced reserves.
