FIIUTBALL Coach Tully Speaks After four highly successful campaigns clur- ing which the boys of Our Lady won 26 games, tied 3, and lost only 4- disaster struck, as the 1951 Irish went down for the count in six of their eight games. A 13-7 victo1'y over a tradi- tional rival, Pope Pius of Passaic, and a 30-25 usqueakerw over Fordham Prep of the Bronx, New York, were the only bright spots of the sea- son. In fairness to all concerned, some factors which contributed extensively to the demise of the Queensmen should be mentioned here, not for the sake of implying that things may have been different wif onlyw-but just to make the season7s analysis accurate. To begin with, teams which Queen of Peace had been beating regularly, squared some old accounts. Immaculate Conception of Montclair, beaten four straight years by the Irish, gained sweet revenge to the tune of 44--61 After taking three successive beatings from the Green and Gold, St. Mary's of Rutherford punched out a 21-O victory. Then, Harrison, not to be denied after four years of famine. downed the Irish in a 13-7 mudfight. Another factor, one that is not appreciated by the average fan, was that the Irish lacked Ha good bench meaning experienced reserves. As everyone is aware, a good Hrst team means very little unless it is backed up by top-fiight substi- Q. P. Seniors, PfdCl1 C8 mqkes L Perfect Coach Joseph Tully Fighting linemen. .af Q., 1 C03ChC5 ta lk ig over wi th e0-C2'PV'mS' Queensmen aharp-shootels tutes. The failing of the Q.P. bench, however, cannot be attributed to the lack of ability or effort on the part of its members, but more di- rectly to their lack of numbers and late turnout. The mistaken idea that a boy can come out for football in his Junior or Senior year and still compete on even terms with his opponents, was never more heartbreakingly shattered than dur- ing the 1951 season. To complicate the situation, crippling in- juries played havoc with the team almost daily. Coupled with the loss of seventeen members of the l950 Co-champs and the unusually small turnout for football, this plague of injuries ren- dered the Queensmen almost powerless at vari- ous stages of the campaign. As a fair example of the devastation of these chronic and freak acci- dents we may offer that, what was considered the first string backfield played intact as a unit for exactly one and one half quarters of one game, during the whole year! This was not confined to the backs aloncg however, space does not permit mentioning other instances. F' The past seasonis poor showing serves the purpose of proving that the seemingly lowly 42 Freshmen and Sophomores are the backbone of ally winning team. If Queen of Peace is to reach once again its place at the top of the heap, more boys are needed to make the sacrifices of tough years of practice in their early years in high school, in order that when they are ready for varsity competition they will have the poise and well-based confidence that comes with exper- ience. Nobody becomes a football player in three weeks. Let's not forget this lesson which was so pointedly learned last season. Q. P. Menifee, U 'Y Heads or Tails. ax A L nun il.-4' Q , 1 1 5? The first ten amendments, known as the Bill Q of Rights, are mostly the work of Madison, and became part J of the Constitution in 1791. In its inception, the Constitution Q was not without opposition both in and out of Congress, it Many thought that the document was not sufficiently explicit Z as to individual and state rights. It was proposed, therefore, A that a number of safeguarding amendments should be added. Q In line with this proposal, the First Congress in its first ses' 3, sion of September 25, 1789, adopted and submitted to the states what is now our so-called Bill of Rights. These 5, amendments were ratified by the states and became part of Q the fundamental law of our land. The first amendment was K, intended to clarify the whole question of what is known as Q the separation of church and state and thus to put the citizens A of this country at ease on the great question as to whether under the Constitution there could ever be a state church ,S here in the United States, This assurance, however, on the part of our patriot founders is now being misinterpreted, ter and those. who cannot stand the prosperity of another form Q Q ol Christian belief, are endeavoring to read into the first 1,5 amendment the violation ol the rights guaranteed by the Q Constitution-of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness p even in the domain of religious belief. 1Selection from the address A'The Bill of Rights.
